Chapter 24 - Attack on Malibu

The days following Tony Stark's public challenge to the Mandarin were unusually quiet.

Too quiet.

Pepper Potts knew that silence never lasted long around Tony.

She was proven right when JARVIS announced an unexpected visitor.

"Maya Hansen has arrived, sir."

Tony froze.

Pepper noticed.

"You know her?"

Tony forced an awkward smile.

"...From a long time ago."

Before Tony could explain further, Maya entered the living room.

Years had changed many things, but not the unmistakable familiarity between them.

Pepper greeted her politely, though her eyes quickly shifted between Maya and Tony.

The hesitation.

The uncomfortable smiles.

The unfinished sentences.

It didn't take long for Pepper to realise there was history neither of them had mentioned.

"So..." Pepper asked casually, "how exactly do you two know each other?"

Tony rubbed the back of his neck.

"New Year's Eve... years ago."

Maya couldn't help smiling.

"We never exactly finished our conversation."

Tony looked as though he'd rather face another terrorist attack than continue this one.

Pepper folded her arms.

"I imagine you had quite a few unfinished conversations back then."

Tony opened his mouth.

Closed it again.

For once, Iron Man had absolutely nothing to say.

The tension lingered only briefly before Maya's expression became serious.

"I didn't come here because of our past."

She placed several research files onto the table.

"It's about Aldrich Killian."

Tony's expression changed immediately.

The room grew quiet as Maya explained Advanced Idea Mechanics, Killian's work with Extremis, and her growing suspicion that events surrounding the Mandarin were far more complicated than they appeared.

Tony listened carefully.

Every instinct told him something wasn't adding up.

Before he could ask another question—

"Sir."

JARVIS' voice interrupted.

"Multiple unidentified aircraft approaching the property at high velocity."

Tony frowned.

"Military?"

"No, sir."

A brief pause.

"Missiles."

Everything happened at once.

"Pepper!" Tony shouted.

The first explosion shattered the cliffside beneath the mansion.

Glass erupted inward.

Steel supports twisted violently as another missile slammed into the structure.

The entire house trembled.

Tony immediately activated the prototype armour, individual pieces flying toward him from every direction.

Another explosion.

The floor cracked beneath their feet.

Tony ignored the armour reaching for him.

Instead, he redirected every piece toward Pepper.

"Tony!"

"Trust me!"

The armour locked around Pepper seconds before another blast tore through the mansion, throwing everyone apart.

The cliff finally gave way.

The Stark mansion began sliding into the Pacific Ocean.

Walls collapsed.

Laboratories vanished beneath falling debris.

Years of inventions disappeared into the darkness below.

Tony barely managed to assemble enough of the suit around himself before diving after Pepper as the entire mansion vanished beneath the waves.

The attack wasn't over.

Three heavily armed helicopters circled above the burning coastline, preparing another strike.

Tony finally completed enough of the Mark 42 to enter the fight.

"JARVIS."

"Online, sir."

"Let's remind them whose house they just destroyed."

The damaged armour blasted into the sky.

The helicopters immediately opened fire.

Tony twisted between streams of machine-gun fire, his incomplete suit responding slower than usual.

A missile locked onto him.

He rolled beneath it, forcing it to collide with the lead helicopter.

The explosion illuminated the night.

"One down."

The remaining aircraft separated, attempting to surround him.

Tony smiled.

"Classic mistake."

He intentionally flew between them before sharply climbing upward.

Unable to react in time, one helicopter's rockets struck the other.

A second fireball erupted across the Pacific.

The last helicopter turned to flee.

Tony accelerated.

Within seconds he landed atop its fuselage.

Repulsors tore through the engine housing.

The aircraft spiralled uncontrollably toward the empty ocean before exploding harmlessly offshore.

Silence returned.

The battle was over.

Tony hovered above the burning remains of his home.

Nothing remained except twisted steel drifting across the waves.

His workshop...

His laboratory...

His memories...

Gone.

JARVIS finally spoke.

"Power reserves critically low."

Tony looked one last time at the place he had once called home.

"Take us to Tennessee."

"Following the only available lead, sir."

The damaged armour turned away from Malibu.

Behind him, flames continued to burn across the dark Pacific, marking the place where Iron Man had lost everything.

The damaged Mark 42 stumbled into the snow-covered outskirts of Rose Hill, Tennessee, before collapsing beside an abandoned garage.

Every remaining system shut down.

Tony forced the faceplate open and stepped out, his body aching from exhaustion.

"So much for flying first class."

JARVIS answered weakly.

"Power reserves... depleted, sir."

Tony looked at the motionless armour.

For the first time in years...

Iron Man was powerless.

Morning arrived with an unexpected visitor.

A young boy stood in the doorway, staring at both Tony and the broken armour.

"You know you're in my garage, right?"

Tony sighed.

"So I've been informed."

The boy introduced himself as Harley Keener.

Curious beyond reason, Harley bombarded Tony with questions before finally asking,

"So... where's the rest of your suit?"

Tony glanced toward the lifeless Mark 42.

"Right there."

"It doesn't look very superhero-ish."

"It isn't feeling very superhero-ish either."

Despite everything that had happened, Tony couldn't help smiling.

After convincing Harley not to reveal his presence, Tony searched for a way to recharge the armour.

Nothing.

The Mark 42 required technology far beyond anything available in the small Tennessee town.

Without power...

The suit was little more than expensive scrap metal.

Tony sat quietly beside it.

For years, the armour had answered every problem.

Now it couldn't even stand.

His thoughts drifted back to Malibu.

The collapsing mansion.

Pepper falling into the ocean.

The missiles.

The fire.

The helplessness.

He clenched his fists.

"I should've seen it coming."

Harley quietly approached, carrying a blanket and a half-eaten sandwich.

"You look terrible."

"Thanks."

"I meant it as a compliment."

Tony laughed despite himself.

Harley hesitated before speaking again.

"If the suit's broken..."

"...can't you just fix it?"

Tony stared at the boy.

The question sounded almost childish.

Then he realised...

It was exactly the question he needed.

He wasn't trapped because the armour had failed.

He was trapped because he'd forgotten who built it.

Tony looked around the cluttered garage.

Old tools.

Rusty shelves.

Broken machinery.

Scrap metal.

Nothing compared to his Malibu workshop.

Yet...

Years earlier, in a cave halfway across the world, he had built the first Iron Man suit with even less.

A small smile crossed his face.

"I don't need a laboratory."

Harley tilted his head.

"You don't?"

Tony stood up.

"No."

"I just need something to work with."

The inventor was back.

Without functioning repulsors...

Without artificial intelligence...

Without billion-pound workshops...

Tony Stark began building once again.

Not because he had an Iron Man suit.

But because, beneath every layer of armour...

He was still an engineer.

With the Mark 42 barely functional, Tony Stark had no choice but to rely on the one weapon that had never failed him—his mind.

Guided by the clues left behind in Rose Hill, he retraced the final hours of those who had supposedly died in unexplained explosions. Every witness described the same impossible phenomenon.

There were no bombs.

The victims themselves had become the explosions.

The pattern led him to one name.

Aldrich Killian.

Every investigation pointed toward Advanced Idea Mechanics, yet there was never enough evidence to expose the organisation publicly. Every trail ended in another dead witness, another erased record, another carefully constructed lie.

As Tony pieced the fragments together, another tragedy unfolded elsewhere.

Pepper Potts was abducted.

Killian no longer needed threats.

He wanted leverage.

When Maya Hansen learned what had happened, the weight of her past finally became unbearable.

"I created Extremis to regenerate damaged tissue," she whispered. "I wanted to save lives... not turn people into weapons."

For the first time since arriving, Maya chose to stand against the man she had once trusted.

Tony uncovered AIM's hidden connections and identified the bald Extremis operative who had been present during the attack that critically injured Happy Hogan.

Tony realised he wasn't an ordinary bodyguard.

He was the key.

Tracking him through abandoned safe houses and encrypted communications, Tony eventually cornered him inside a deserted warehouse.

Without a functioning suit, the fight became a test of improvisation.

The Extremis soldier possessed overwhelming strength, but Tony relied on traps, timing, and the environment itself. Fire suppression systems, electrical wiring, collapsing steel beams, and improvised explosives gradually turned the battlefield against the enhanced operative.

Finally pinned beneath twisted metal, the man laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Tony grabbed him by the collar.

"Then explain it."

Blood stained the man's smile.

"The Mandarin..."

"...doesn't exist."

Tony's grip loosened.

"What?"

"The man on television..."

"...is just an actor."

Every terrorist broadcast.

Every threat.

Every execution.

Every declaration of war.

All of it had been carefully staged.

The Mandarin was nothing more than a mask.

Killian had been hiding behind someone else's face all along.

Tony's mind raced as every piece of the puzzle suddenly fell into place.

Happy.

The bombings.

AIM.

Extremis.

The challenge.

Malibu.

None of it had been random.

Before he could ask another question, a shadow emerged from behind.

A heavy blow struck the back of Tony's head.

Pain exploded through his vision.

The warehouse spun.

His knees gave way.

The last thing he saw was the Extremis operative smiling through broken teeth.

Then...

Darkness.

Pain was the first thing Tony Stark felt.

A dull, relentless ache echoed through his head as consciousness slowly returned.

He opened his eyes.

Cold steel.

Concrete walls.

Industrial lights hanging from the ceiling.

His wrists were bound tightly to a heavy metal chair.

Across the room stood Maya Hansen.

For a brief moment, relief crossed Tony's face.

"Maya..."

She avoided his eyes.

The silence told him everything.

His expression hardened.

"So..."

"You've been with Killian all along."

Maya shook her head desperately.

"No, Tony... it's not—"

The sound of slow applause echoed through the chamber.

Aldrich Killian stepped from the shadows.

Calm.

Confident.

Victorious.

"Welcome back, Tony."

Tony met his gaze without fear.

For several seconds neither man spoke.

Then Tony smiled faintly.

"I finally understand."

Killian raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"This was never about Extremis."

"It was never about AIM."

"It wasn't even about the Mandarin."

Tony's eyes remained fixed on him.

"It was about proving you mattered."

Silence filled the room.

Killian's smile slowly disappeared.

Memories resurfaced uninvited.

A lonely rooftop years ago.

A brilliant billionaire who never returned.

Hours spent waiting in the cold while hope slowly became humiliation.

The forgotten scientist.

The invisible man.

His jaw tightened.

"You left me standing there."

Tony sighed quietly.

"I honestly don't remember."

Those words cut deeper than any weapon.

Killian's composure shattered.

"I rebuilt myself!"

"I turned weakness into perfection!"

"I made governments kneel!"

"I created the greatest biological breakthrough in history!"

"And the only reason any of this exists..."

His voice trembled with rage.

"...is because one arrogant genius couldn't spare me five minutes."

Tony looked at him carefully.

"No."

Killian frowned.

"You didn't build all this because I ignored you."

"You built it because you couldn't let it go."

The room fell silent.

For the first time, Killian saw no fear in Tony Stark.

Only pity.

His anger exploded.

Killian drew a pistol and pressed it against Tony's forehead.

"I could end your story right now."

Tony didn't move.

"If killing me fixes your life..."

"...go ahead."

Maya suddenly stepped between them.

"No!"

Killian barely acknowledged her.

"Maya."

"Move."

She stood her ground.

"If you kill him..."

"...then you'll become everything we swore science would never create."

Killian laughed.

"You still think I need your permission?"

Tears welled in Maya's eyes.

"If Tony dies..."

"...I'll kill myself."

For a heartbeat...

The room became completely still.

Then Killian smiled.

"You've always overestimated your importance."

The gun shifted.

A single shot echoed through the chamber.

Maya staggered backwards.

Shock filled Tony's face.

"Maya!"

She collapsed onto the cold floor.

Blood spread beneath her as her breathing grew weaker.

Tony stared at Killian in disbelief.

"You've lost your mind."

Killian calmly lowered the pistol.

"No, Tony."

"I've simply stopped pretending morality matters."

He walked toward a nearby monitor.

With a press of a button, two live video feeds appeared.

On one screen...

The President of the United States was bound aboard an oil tanker, surrounded by armed Extremis soldiers.

On the other...

Pepper Potts hung suspended inside an AIM facility, already beginning to show the terrifying effects of Extremis.

Killian folded his hands behind his back.

"Here's the game."

He looked directly into Tony's eyes.

"You have one chance."

"You can save your President..."

"...or you can save the woman you love."

"You cannot save both."

Tony's jaw tightened.

Killian smiled.

"I've always admired your confidence."

"Now let's see what happens..."

"...when Iron Man has to choose who deserves saving."

The chamber fell silent.

For the first time since becoming Iron Man...

Tony Stark was faced with a battle that no suit, no weapon, and no invention could solve.

The chamber fell silent after Aldrich Killian's footsteps faded into the distance.

Only the hum of machinery remained.

Tony sat motionless, still bound to the steel chair.

On the monitors before him, the images remained unchanged.

The President of the United States.

Pepper Potts.

Both prisoners.

Both running out of time.

Killian believed he had presented an impossible choice.

Tony looked at the screens for several long seconds before quietly muttering,

"...You still don't know me."

Across the room, Maya struggled to breathe.

Despite the gunshot wound, she forced herself upright.

"I'm... sorry, Tony..."

Tony glanced toward her.

"Save your strength."

"I wanted to stop him..."

"I know."

She looked at him with tear-filled eyes.

"I thought... I could control him."

Tony shook his head.

"No."

"You thought you could change him."

A faint smile appeared on Maya's face.

"I suppose... that's worse."

Tony looked around the laboratory.

Steel walls.

Armed guards outside.

No tools.

No weapons.

No armour.

To anyone else...

It was hopeless.

To Tony Stark...

It was a problem waiting to be solved.

His thumb quietly pressed against the concealed emergency transmitter built into his wristwatch.

Thousands of kilometres away, inside Harley Keener's garage in Tennessee, the dormant Mark 42 received its command.

Power systems awakened.

Diagnostic lights flickered to life.

The armour launched through the garage doors and soared into the night sky.

Back inside AIM's facility, Tony counted the seconds.

Ten.

Twenty.

Thirty.

The guards outside continued their conversation, completely unaware.

Then—

A deafening crash echoed throughout the complex.

The ceiling exploded inward.

Golden and crimson armour pieces burst through the smoke like guided missiles.

Helmet.

Gauntlets.

Chest plate.

Leg armour.

Each component locked perfectly into place.

Within moments...

Iron Man stood once again.

The guards rushed into the chamber.

Too late.

Tony shattered the restraints with a single movement.

Repulsor blasts hurled the first wave across the room while the Mark 42's shoulder weapons disabled the others before they could raise their rifles.

The damaged armour struggled to keep pace.

Panels jammed.

Servos hesitated.

Power fluctuated.

Tony adapted instantly.

When one gauntlet failed to fire, he turned the malfunction into a feint, disarming an Extremis soldier with a precise strike before redirecting another's attack against his own allies.

Numbers meant nothing.

Creativity won battles.

Within minutes, the chamber fell silent once more.

Tony hurried to Maya's side.

She was weak, but alive.

He sealed her wound with an emergency medical foam stored inside the armour.

"It won't heal you..."

"...but it'll keep you alive."

Maya grabbed his arm.

"Tony..."

"Killian won't stop."

"I know."

"He'll go after the President first."

Tony looked back at the two video feeds.

"No."

"He expects me to choose."

The helmet closed over his face.

"So I'm going to ruin his plan."

JARVIS' voice filled the armour.

"Colonel Rhodes has been located, sir."

Tony smiled.

"Perfect."

"Open a secure channel."

Rhodey's voice came through almost immediately.

"Stark? Last I heard, you were dead."

"I've had a busy week."

"What happened?"

Tony looked once toward Maya before turning toward the shattered exit.

"I found the man behind the Mandarin."

"And he's declared war."

Rhodey's tone became serious.

"What do you need?"

Tony ignited the suit's thrusters.

"You."

The cargo aircraft roared across the night sky.

Inside its dimly lit hold, Tony Stark stood before a holographic display projected by JARVIS.

One destination remained fixed before him.

Killian's oil tanker.

Pepper was still alive.

That was all that mattered.

"Estimated arrival?" Tony asked.

"Thirty-four minutes, sir."

Tony nodded.

"We're cutting it close."

Before JARVIS could reply, a shrill warning echoed through the cargo bay.

"Priority alert."

A live military transmission appeared before Tony.

Air Force One.

Under attack.

Tony immediately recognised the aircraft.

"The President."

The video feed showed chaos unfolding inside the cabin.

Extremis operatives had breached the aircraft.

Colonel James Rhodes fought desperately to protect the President, but he was hopelessly outnumbered.

Seconds later—

The cabin wall exploded outward.

The President was captured.

Passengers and Secret Service agents were violently pulled into the open sky.

Bodies scattered through the clouds.

Free-falling toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Tony's eyes widened.

"No..."

JARVIS calculated rapidly.

"Estimated impact in less than two minutes."

Tony looked toward the sealed armour standing inside the cargo bay.

Then back toward the oil tanker.

Pepper.

The President's staff.

He couldn't reach both.

For a brief moment...

Killian's ultimatum echoed inside his mind.

Choose.

Tony smiled.

"I already told him."

"I don't play by his rules."

He turned toward the armour.

"JARVIS."

"Remote deployment authorised."

The Mark 42 launched from the cargo aircraft, streaking across the night sky under Tony's command.

Its cameras became Tony's eyes.

Its sensors became his instincts.

The falling passengers rapidly filled the display.

Thirteen lives.

Scattered across kilometres of open sky.

No armour could catch them one by one.

Tony analysed the trajectories.

Wind speed.

Altitude.

Velocity.

Time.

An impossible calculation.

Then he found the answer.

"They don't need thirteen rescues."

"They need one."

The armour intercepted the nearest falling agent.

"Listen carefully!"

The terrified man barely heard him over the rushing wind.

"When I grab you..."

"Grab the next person!"

Within seconds, the first survivor caught a second.

The second caught a third.

One after another, frightened strangers reached desperately for each other as Tony guided them into a growing human chain suspended in the sky.

"Almost there..."

The Mark 42 accelerated beneath them, repulsors blazing at maximum output.

Every warning light inside the HUD turned red.

"Structural limits exceeded."

"I know."

The armour caught the final person.

For one terrifying moment...

The entire chain continued falling.

Then the repulsors roared.

The Mark 42 strained against impossible weight as it slowly arrested their descent.

The ocean rushed upward.

Fifty metres.

Thirty.

Ten.

With one final burst of power, Tony guided the exhausted survivors onto the surface of the water before nearby rescue helicopters arrived.

Every passenger lived.

Inside the cargo aircraft, Tony finally allowed himself a quiet breath.

JARVIS confirmed the result.

"All thirteen individuals successfully rescued."

Tony smiled.

"That's more like it."

His expression soon hardened once more.

"The President's still in Killian's hands."

"And Pepper's waiting."

The holographic display shifted back to the oil tanker.

Tony's destination had never changed.

The rescue had only delayed the inevitable.

The burning oil tanker had become a battlefield.

Dozens of Iron Legion suits streaked across the night sky, engaging Extremis soldiers as flames engulfed the platform below.

Tony Stark landed before Aldrich Killian.

"So," Killian smirked, "you came."

"I always do."

The battle erupted.

Steel clashed against living fire as Killian's Extremis-enhanced body shrugged off repulsor blasts and missiles alike. One by one, Tony sacrificed armour after armour, adapting to every setback.

"You've already lost," Killian taunted between blows.

"Pepper doesn't need you anymore."

"Extremis has perfected her."

"She'll become far greater without you."

Tony staggered back, wiped the blood from his lip, and grinned.

"No."

Killian frowned.

"She's already perfect."

For the first time, Killian hesitated.

Tony wasn't fighting out of fear.

He was fighting out of love.

Nearby, Pepper finally broke free.

The unstable Extremis within her awakened, allowing her to hurl herself into the battle. Together, she and Tony forced Killian onto the edge of the platform.

"Now, JARVIS!"

The damaged Mark 42 locked onto Killian before self-destructing in a brilliant explosion.

Fire swallowed the platform.

Pepper shielded Tony from the blast.

For several seconds...

Nothing moved.

Then a figure emerged from the flames.

Killian.

His body regenerated once more.

"You still don't understand, Stark."

With terrifying speed, Killian struck.

The kick landed squarely against Tony's chest, launching him high above the burning platform.

His damaged armour failed.

Tony plummeted toward twisted steel below.

Then...

A radiant golden hand caught him effortlessly.

Time itself seemed to pause.

A calm golden aura illuminated the smoke.

Tony blinked before recognising the familiar figure.

"...Aureon."

A tired smile crossed his face.

"I thought you'd retired."

KB chuckled.

"I landed this morning."

"It was only after Alexa informed me that your survival probability had become... unacceptable... that I decided to interfere."

He looked Tony over with exaggerated seriousness.

"You should thank me."

"Otherwise Mr Stark would've become..."

He paused deliberately.

"...the late Tony Stark."

Tony couldn't help laughing.

"You really rehearsed that, didn't you?"

"A little."

KB gently lowered him onto the platform.

Then, without another glance at Killian, he walked towards Pepper.

She sat against a damaged support beam, breathing heavily as unstable Extremis energy coursed through her body.

KB knelt beside her.

"You're safe."

Pepper finally exhaled.

"Thank God..."

"...you came."

KB smiled warmly.

"Of course."

"After all..."

"...you're my bestie."

Despite the chaos around them, Pepper laughed.

Behind them, Killian rose once more.

His body burned brighter than ever as he charged toward Tony.

Pepper looked anxiously at KB.

"Aren't you going to help him?"

KB calmly watched Tony stand once again.

Then he answered with quiet certainty.

"A teacher does not write the examination for his student."

"This battle belongs to Tony."

"If I fight it for him..."

"...he will never discover the strength he already possesses."

Pepper followed his gaze.

Slowly...

She nodded.

Tony rose.

No fresh armour.

No overwhelming weapon.

Only himself.

This time, he stopped trying to overpower Killian.

Instead, he studied him.

Every regeneration consumed more energy.

Every attack became less stable.

Every wound took longer to heal.

Tony smiled.

"So that's your weakness."

Killian roared and charged.

Tony sidestepped at the last possible moment, redirecting Killian's own momentum into an unstable Extremis reactor damaged during the battle.

The reaction became uncontrollable.

Killian's body attempted to regenerate.

Again.

And again.

Until the energy consuming him exceeded the energy sustaining him.

His flames turned inward.

He collapsed to one knee.

Defeated.

Tony slowly approached.

A repulsor charged in his palm.

Killian closed his eyes.

"Go on."

"Finish it."

The glow faded.

Tony lowered his hand.

"No."

Killian looked up in disbelief.

"I'm done letting hatred make my choices."

Silence settled across the battlefield.

Then KB stepped forward.

He looked first at Tony.

A quiet pride filled his eyes.

"You have already won."

Tony frowned slightly.

"I haven't done anything yet."

"You have."

"Not because your enemy lies defeated..."

"...but because you refused to become him."

Only then did KB kneel before Killian.

He spoke without accusation.

"Was revenge worth Maya's sacrifice?"

Killian remained silent.

"Did the world finally see you?"

No answer.

"Has victory healed the loneliness you carried for all those years?"

Tears slowly filled Killian's eyes.

"...No."

KB nodded gently.

"The world rejected Aldrich Killian once."

"I won't."

Killian looked at him in confusion.

"You still possess something priceless."

"The freedom to choose who you become next."

KB extended his hand.

"Come with me."

"Join the Hope Organisation."

"Not to erase your past..."

"...but to give your future a purpose."

Killian stared at the offered hand for a long time.

Finally...

He accepted it.

"I... don't know if I deserve another chance."

KB helped him stand.

"Perhaps."

"But humanity deserves the scientist you could still become."

As emergency aircraft approached the tanker, KB turned back toward Tony.

A warm smile crossed his face.

"I like the man you've become."

Tony chuckled.

"Still a work in progress."

"So are we all."

KB placed a reassuring hand upon Tony's shoulder.

"Do not burden yourself chasing every mystery beyond the reach of mortals."

"There will always be questions greater than us."

"But remember this..."

"You are never alone."

"You have Pepper."

"You have your friends."

"You have the Avengers."

"And as long as I draw breath..."

"...you will always have me."

Tony's usual sarcasm failed him.

He simply nodded.

For once...

Words weren't necessary.

KB smiled knowingly.

"This moment belongs to the two of you."

The golden aura surrounding Aureon shimmered softly before fading into the morning light.

He departed without another word.

Tony turned toward Pepper.

She smiled.

He smiled back.

The battle had ended.

Not because Iron Man wore armour.

But because Tony Stark had finally discovered that the greatest strength he possessed had always been the heart to choose hope over hatred.

...

Meanwhile in ,Washington, D.C. was built upon secrets.

Tonight...

One of those secrets had begun to unravel.

Inside Hope's Intelligence Division, Benjamin Morgan stood before dozens of holographic displays as Alexa continuously analysed encrypted S.H.I.E.L.D. transmissions.

Thousands of intelligence reports flowed across the screens.

"Alexa."

"Cross-reference Project Insight authorisations with Level Eight personnel."

"Completed."

"Result?"

"Forty-three procedural inconsistencies."

Benjamin frowned.

"Enough to suspect infiltration."

"But not enough to accuse anyone."

Alexa answered calmly.

"Correct."

Benjamin folded his arms.

"Then someone is hiding behind legitimate authority."

He saved every anomaly into a separate investigation file.

One name continued appearing more frequently than the others.

Alexander Pierce.

Benjamin stared at it for several moments.

"No assumptions."

"Only evidence."

He closed the file and continued searching.

Across Washington...

Nick Fury stood inside Steve Rogers' apartment.

Every instinct told him time was running out.

He activated a signal jammer before speaking quietly.

"If they ask..."

"...trust nobody."

Steve frowned.

"They?"

Before Fury could answer—

The apartment windows exploded inward.

Gunfire tore through the room.

Steve immediately pulled Fury behind cover as masked attackers flooded the corridor.

Together they fought through the ambush before Fury escaped into the streets below.

The chase began.

His armoured SUV smashed through multiple roadblocks while enemy vehicles pursued relentlessly.

Explosions echoed through the city.

Every escape route narrowed.

Finally...

The Winter Soldier stepped from the darkness.

Calm.

Silent.

Unstoppable.

His customised rifle pierced Fury's vehicle, disabling it instantly.

Forced onto the streets, Fury fought desperately against overwhelming numbers.

The Winter Soldier met him head-on.

Knife clashed against knife.

Bullet met bullet.

Fury's decades of experience kept him alive...

But only barely.

The assassin finally raised his pistol.

A single shot rang through the night.

Fury collapsed.

The attackers disappeared as quickly as they had arrived.

To the world...

Nick Fury had just been assassinated.

Steve reached the scene moments too late.

Emergency crews rushed Fury to the hospital.

Doctors fought to save him.

Natasha Romanoff arrived shortly afterwards, her expression unreadable.

Hours later...

The hospital officially declared Director Nick Fury dead.

Steve stood silently beside the covered body.

The room felt impossibly empty.

Outside, Alexander Pierce expressed his condolences while quietly assuming control of the investigation.

Hydra's first victory had been achieved.

Or so they believed.

Late that night...

Inside a hidden underground medical facility, faint heart monitors echoed through the darkness.

Nick Fury slowly opened his eyes.

A familiar face stood beside him.

Dr. Maria Hill lowered her voice.

"They bought it."

Fury managed the slightest smile.

"Good."

"Keep it that way."

Hill nodded.

"Only a handful of people know you're alive."

Fury closed his eyes again.

"The fewer..."

"...the better."

At Hope Headquarters, Alexa interrupted Benjamin's investigation.

"Incoming classified update."

Benjamin looked up.

"What is it?"

"Director Nick Fury has been officially declared deceased."

Benjamin remained silent.

After several moments, he asked a different question.

"Alexa."

"Was the body publicly identified?"

"No."

"Were autopsy records released?"

"No."

Benjamin slowly leaned back.

"Hmm..."

Alexa waited.

Benjamin smiled faintly.

"I've learned something from KB."

"When the evidence is incomplete..."

"...never let appearances become conclusions."

He reopened Fury's file.

Instead of marking it Deceased...

He selected another status.

Unconfirmed.

Somewhere in Washington...

The real game had only just begun.
