Chapter 2 - Flames That Wouldn’t Fade

The house was quiet; no one was crying.

It was 11:30 P.M.

Every guest had arrived, and then the ambulance arrived. The siblings ran out of the room towards the entrance. They all hugged their father and started crying. Their father looked sad, tired, and quiet. Her lifeless body was taken out of the ambulance, and loud cries began. Devansh's maasi came out of the car and ran inside. She was exhausted because they were in the hospital, all day they were standing anxiously without rest. She was unable to stand and sat near her sister's body and started crying. The siblings were forced to go inside. They walked in slowly, unable to withstand the situation. They sat near their mother's body. Devansh was near his maasi, and she hugged him. The face was revealed, and it was swollen and sorrowful. Devansh stood up and walked towards the drawing room and sat near his father. Everyone was talking. His father was talking to the guest about everything that had happened.

The house became quiet; the only voice you could hear was that of crying.

It was late in the night, and everyone started to sleep. Ansh took Devansh inside the room and told him to sleep. He lay on the bed, but he was not able to sleep. He seemed to be thinking about something. Ansh sat beside him, wanted to say something, but stayed quiet. Ansh also lay on the bed and started comforting Devansh. They both fell asleep. When Ansh woke up, Devansh was not there. He stood up and peeked out of the curtain covering the door of the room, finding Devansh sleeping in the drawing room. He sat on the corner of the bed, feeling tired and dizzy, but couldn't fall asleep. Thoughts about everyone were spinning in his head, especially about Devansh. Suddenly, Devansh came in crying. He didn't react to it, but came closer to Devansh and comforted him. Devansh's elder sister came in, took a deep breath, and wiped her tears. " You have to be brave, maa is with us. Tomorrow you have to go, you should rest, everyone is there, don't think that much."

He wiped his tears and replied with, "Hmm!!".

The next day, everyone started preparing for the last rituals. Devansh was told to get ready. After he got ready, every man was sent out of the house, where they were preparing to take her to the smashana. Devansh's eyes were swollen, and he started crying and leaned on Ansh's shoulder. Ansh comforted him and said, " You have to be brave, now, take a deep breath, and stop crying."

The women came out with her lifeless body, and she was put on a bamboo bed. For the last time, her face was filled with happiness. She was smiling.

After the last rituals, when everyone came home, the atmosphere was normal without the sounds of crying. Everyone was talking and preparing to go to their houses. The food was being served. When Devansh arrived at the house, he immediately ran upstairs into his mother's room. Ansh, behind him, ran too. When Ansh entered the room, he found Devansh sitting on the floor near the bed. He picked him up and forced him to sit on the bed and asked, " Do you want some water?" to which Devansh replied, "Yes."

Ansh gave him a glass of water and told him not to cry anymore because it would only affect his family members. Devansh said, with a shaking voice. " I can still feel the flames of heat on my face. When I close my eyes, I can see the pyre of fire.

Suddenly, Devansh hugged Ansh tightly and started crying. Ansh comforted him. But, something else was going on, in his mind.
