Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Guntic slowly walked his way out of the wagon, all the poison water must have also turned into a cloud when that little ball cracked. He leaned down to Uzi.

¨Crap. hes losing blood fast.¨

Guntic picked up Uzi, slowly carrying him to the back, and laying him in the back of the carriage. He hobbled over to the front of the carriage, when a horse's voice came out to him.'

"Dont for-forget me!"

Guntic hopped out and looked, over by the fire, another man sat, blood covering him, "Who are you?" Guntic asked, while picking him up and bringing him next to Uzi.

"I'm Kael, I helped Uzi, I'll tell you about it later." Kael passed out not soon after that.

"I cant believe this happened" Guntic started as he sat in the front. He looked towards the fire, now spreading rapidly. "I don't have anything to put this fire out either.

Kael sat propped against a crate, rifle gone, hands empty and trembling. His face was ash-gray under the soot.

"Rest," Guntic said, voice rough but not unkind. He pressed two fingers to Kael's neck; pulse fast, thready. "You're no good to anyone dead on your feet."

Kael tried to argue. The words came out a mumble, then nothing. His head lolled. Guntic caught him before he slid, eased him onto a folded blanket beside Uzi. The boy was already gone; eyes shut, breath shallow, fresh blood seeping through the hasty bandage on his shoulder. Dark streaks curled from the gash like ink in water. Guntic's own chest hitched. He pressed a fresh cloth to the wound, tied it tight, then stood. The effort left him swaying. He exhaled, long and ragged, the sound of a man counting every year he'd outlived.

"Old bones," he muttered to the night. "Keep moving."

At the front, he gripped the reins. The horse flicked an ear, waiting.

"Walk on," Guntic called, voice cracking like a whip. "Hup!"

The wagon creaked, turned slow in the churned earth. Wheels found the ruts of the path and settled. Hooves clopped steady, pulling them away from the fire.

In the back, Kael's eyes fluttered. Through the canvas flap he watched the flames shrink; first a bonfire, then a torch, then a spark. Smoke swallowed the rest, thick and choking, until even that thinned to gray nothing. His vision tunneled. The wagon's sway rocked him like a cradle. The last thing he saw was Uzi's chest rising, falling, rising; then dark.
