For several seconds after the synchronized pulse, the world around Ash felt muted, as if the forest itself was holding its breath.
Silva was the first to break the silence.
"This changes everything."
Palo glanced between Ash and the Founder.
"How? It's just a pulse."
"No," Silva said softly.
"It's a choice."
Ash didn't speak.
He still felt the soft warmth spreading under his skin.
A quiet presence resting against him, waiting.
Not demanding.
Not overwhelming.
Just there.
Listening.
The Founder folded his arms, his voice dark and analytical.
"When a remnant synchronizes independently, it's forming the earliest layer of identity. The decision to align with Ash wasn't automatic. It was self-initiated."
Palo raised an eyebrow.
"So he chose Ash? Again?"
Ash lowered his gaze.
This wasn't the first time Zero-B had chosen him.
Silva stepped closer, her tone gentler.
"Think of it like a newborn trying to recognize the first person it trusts. He's rebuilding that instinct."
Ash didn't know how to feel about that.
Relieved ? maybe.
Worried, definitely.
But also something deeper, harder to name.
The spark pulsed again.
A single, soft beat.
Silva's eyes widened slightly.
"That was emotional resonance."
Palo blinked.
"Emotional what?"
Silva turned her tablet toward them.
"This pattern, this shape appears when a remnant imitates a feeling it senses. Ash, what were you thinking just now?"
Ash hesitated.
"I felt… a bit relieved."
Silva nodded.
"And Zero-B mirrored that. He's learning emotional orientation."
Palo frowned.
"So he has feelings now?"
"Not feelings," Silva corrected.
"Responses. Seeds that might grow into feelings."
The Founder finally spoke . Calm, clinical, unsettling.
"It's the beginning of selfhood."
Ash felt the next pulse slightly different from the last.
Curious.
Tentative.
Like a hand reaching out in the dark.
"He's trying to understand me," Ash murmured.
"Or understand himself through you," Silva added.
Ash slowly sank into a crouch, resting his arm on his knee.
The glow dimmed as if comforting itself, then brightened again when he exhaled,
responding to his breathing rhythm.
Palo stared.
"He's copying your breath now."
Ash nodded.
"He used to do that, too. In the early days."
Silva made a quiet sound of realization.
"That means his memory isn't completely gone. Or maybe… the bond retained fragments."
The Founder's voice hardened.
"That bond is becoming more central than I predicted."
Ash looked up sharply.
"Is that a problem?"
"It depends," the Founder said.
"On what?" Palo pressed.
"On whether Zero-B sees himself as separate from Ash," the Founder replied, eyes darkening.
"Or as an extension of him."
Ash felt his stomach tighten.
Silva shot the Founder a glare.
"Don't plant that idea before we even understand his trajectory."
But the Founder wasn't finished.
"When identity forms too closely around a single anchor, the remnant may not seek independence. He may build his entire structure around Ash , emotionally and cognitively."
Ash felt the spark pulse again,
this time stronger.
Warm.
Assured.
Silva sucked in a breath.
"Ash… he reacted to that."
Palo's eyes widened.
"You think he understood what the Founder said?"
"No," Silva said quickly.
"But he sensed Ash's shift in emotion. And he responded in a stabilizing pattern."
Ash understood instantly.
"He doesn't want me to be upset."
Silva nodded.
"That's the first sign of preference."
Ash froze.
"Preference… like he cares what I feel?"
"Yes," Silva said quietly.
"It's small. Subtle. But it's the foundation for forming a sense of 'I.'"
The Founder's expression turned thoughtful, almost ominous.
"And once he has a sense of 'I,' the next question will be…"
His eyes settled on Ash.
"Who am I… in relation to you?"
The spark pulsed again.
A sharper, more defined rhythm.
Not mimicking this time.
Declaring.
Palo swallowed.
"That felt different."
Ash pressed his hand over the glow, surprised by the clarity of what he sensed.
"He's saying something."
Silva moved closer.
"What does it feel like?"
Ash's voice dropped.
"Like a single idea trying to form."
"Which idea?" Palo asked.
Ash exhaled slowly.
"He's trying to say… I exist."
Silva's eyes widened with awe.
"That's identity."
The Founder nodded once, grave and firm.
"And identity always leads to intent."
Before Ash could ask what that meant,
the spark sent one strong, steady pulse.
Silva froze.
"Oh no. That pattern…"
Palo panicked.
"What does it mean?!"
Silva's voice was shaky.
"Ash… he's trying to separate a fraction of himself from you."
Ash's heart skipped.
"You mean?"...
Silva's eyes locked on his.
"Zero-B just attempted his first step toward independence."
