Branches whipped past as Ash and the others sprinted through the forest, the air thick with night mist. The ground trembled at uneven intervals behind them, distant, heavy footfalls that didn't match any living creature Ash had ever heard.
Palo ran beside him, gripping his wrist whenever Ash stumbled, refusing to let him fall.
"Ash, tell me if you feel faint, your core's still unstable!"
Ash shook his head, though his legs felt hollow.
"I'm fine. Keep going."
The copy glanced back with uneasy eyes.
"They're getting closer."
Silva adjusted the small device clipped to her belt, it flickered with red static.
"Two signatures behind us. Maybe three. They're spreading out, trying to surround."
A chill crept up Ash's spine.
"They're hunting… strategically."
Palo swallowed.
"They're acting like.."
"Predators," the copy finished quietly.
Branches cracked in the distance.
Ash pushed himself harder, breath scraping his throat. The forest seemed darker, denser. The path forward narrowed into twisting shadows.
Silva stopped abruptly, raising a hand.
"Wait,....everyone stay still."
They froze.
Ash's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
Silva crouched, brushing her fingers across a small indentation in the soil, perfectly circular. Too perfect.
"A footstep," she murmured.
"But not from us."
Palo leaned in. "How big?"
Silva exhaled sharply.
"Big enough."
The Founder stepped forward, inspecting the ground.
"They're adapting to the environment faster than expected. Your rewrite accelerated their awakening."
Ash winced.
"So this is my fault?"
Palo turned sharply to him.
"Don't start with that. You chose yourself. They're the ones reacting, remember that."
Ash nodded, though guilt gnawed at him.
The Hunters weren't alive, not the way he was ,but they moved with a terrifying purpose.
Silva pointed through the trees.
"The facility is due north. If we cut through the river path, we can reach the outer perimeter before they do."
The copy frowned.
"But the river path has no cover."
"And this path has too much," Silva replied.
Palo grabbed Ash's hand again.
"River path it is."
They ran again, faster.
Ash tried to focus on the rhythm of his breath, but the hum of his core was growing louder, vibrating beneath his skin.
Silva noticed.
"How bad is it?"
Ash breathed out shakily.
"The next layer is unlocking… on its own. It's responding to the Hunters."
The Founder cursed under his breath.
"Of course. The core responds to danger. If it activates now, the system will identify you as a volatile threat."
Palo shot him a glare.
"You talk like he's a ticking device."
The Founder didn't look away.
"Because to them, he is."
The ground trembled again.
Closer.
Palo pulled Ash behind a large fallen tree.
"Shh. Quiet."
They crouched low.
The forest had gone deathly silent.
Ash held his breath.
Then...
A faint glow drifted through the trees.
Not white.
Not blue.
Something like a soft, pulsing gold.
Ash's eyes widened.
"What is that?"
Silva whispered sharply, "Do not move."
The light floated between the trees, weaving like a drifting lantern.
But there was no carrier.
It hovered.
Scanned.
Paused.
Then a second light joined it, bigger, sharper.
Palo whispered,
"Eyes. Those are eyes."
Ash's chest squeezed.
The copy leaned closer to him.
"Stay behind me."
Ash shook his head frantically.
"No, you're still weak from the last pulse."
The glowing eyes drifted closer...smooth, silent, predatory.
Silva's device buzzed violently.
"They found our trail."
Palo tensed.
"Do they see us?"
The Founder shook his head slowly.
"No. Not yet. They're searching for a direct core signature."
But Ash's core pulsed again, bright, involuntary, like a flare under his skin.
The golden eyes froze instantly.
Then turned.
Right toward them.
Silva hissed, "Ash, control it!"
"I'm trying!" Ash whispered.
The glow beneath his skin dimmed, once… twice…
But then surged again, triggered by fear.
The Hunters began to move.....
silent, deliberate, unmistakably aware.
Palo grabbed Ash's chin, forcing him to meet his eyes.
"Ash. Look at me. Only me. Not them."
Ash's breath trembled.
But he nodded.
The glow beneath his skin flickered, weakening.
Silva whispered urgently,
"They're scanning... your signature is dropping.. keep going—"
Ash shut his eyes, trying to steady his breathing.
Breathe.
Breathe.
Focus.
The glow faded...,
Then vanished.
Silence.
The Hunters paused just yards away...eyes bright, scanning the darkness.
Seconds passed.
One.
Two.
Three.
A faint metallic click echoed,..
and both Hunters shifted direction, gliding away into the deeper woods.
The group didn't move for a long moment.
Finally, Silva whispered:
"They didn't detect him."
Palo exhaled, slumping slightly in relief.
The copy leaned back against the fallen tree, trembling.
Ash opened his eyes slowly.
"…I did it."
Palo nodded, gripping his shoulder.
"You did."
The Founder didn't celebrate.
He stared into the darkness where the Hunters had vanished.
"They're testing boundaries. Adjusting tactics. This was only their first sweep."
Ash swallowed.
"What happens… when they stop scanning and start attacking?"
The Founder's jaw tightened.
"Then we run faster."
Silva stood.
"We don't have long. Move."
Ash took one shaky breath, then another, and rose to his feet.
The forest behind them stirred...quiet, but not empty.
And somewhere in the dark, a new pair of golden eyes opened.
Watching.
Waiting.
Following.
