Chapter 46 - Balance Equals Mediocrity

It was immediately clear that the match between Bodoro and Gon was settled from the start.

After all, one was a child who had gained Nen less than a day ago, and the other was an adult who had developed his Nen to a certain level using the ten-fold time difference in the Dungeons.

Bodoro, in particular, had developed several unique techniques by integrating his martial arts with his Nen ability. Unlike other Enhancers who single-mindedly pursued stronger destructive power, his techniques balanced speed, strength, skill, and defense.

In Gon's current state, forget fighting on equal footing; just evading his opponent's attacks was already taking all his strength.

Several times, Gon tried to seize an opening to counterattack, but he was flawlessly blocked every time by a technique called "Flowing Style."

This "Flowing Style" was essentially a defensive technique that used a two-meter radius of En to increase his all-around, 360-degree, dead-angle-free perception, and then used Ken and Ryu to quickly block enemy attacks.

When attacking, Bodoro would switch to the devastating "Blazing Style" or the speed-focused "Thunderbolt Style".

By switching between these three states, he had gradually established his own combat system with virtually no major weaknesses.

The Blazing Style incorporated Transmutation Nen, coating his fists with roaring, high-temperature flames, while the Thunderbolt Style incorporated Emission Nen, allowing him to shoot out thin, rod-shaped Nen bullets, as thick as a chopstick, from his fingertips at extreme speed, instantly piercing important organs and joints on his opponent's body.

Because the targets were small and fast, they were very difficult to dodge, forcing the opponent to rely on full-body Ken for defense.

Watching his friend's battered appearance in the ring, Killua finally couldn't help but ask, "Are you seriously planning to let Gon get seriously hurt?"

"Why not? Don't you think this is the best opportunity to let him understand the cruelty of Nen combat? Besides, the power to end all this has been tightly held in his own hands the entire time. The problem is, he clearly doesn't want it to end yet," Allen replied with a smile.

"Damn it! You really know Gon's personality well. Looks like I need to book a hospital bed in advance," Killua snapped, rolling his eyes.

"Don't worry, it should be over soon."

The moment he spoke…

In the ring, Bodoro suddenly switched from "Flowing Style" to "Thunderbolt Style," lunging forward and unleashing a volley of punches at Gon's vulnerable abdomen at a speed that was almost indistinguishable to the naked eye.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Ugh!"

Although Bodoro did not use advanced techniques like Ko or Ken, the sheer advantage in Aura capacity alone was unbearable for Gon, who had only just acquired Nen less than a day ago. He instantly spat out a mouthful of dark-red blood, his eyes rolled back, and he completely blacked out.

The referee stepped forward, briefly confirmed the situation, and immediately declared the match over.

Before long, the medical team carried the unconscious Gon away to the special ward prepared for contestants at Heavens Arena.

"How was it?"

Allen took the initiative to ask the martial artist who had just walked out of the contestants' tunnel.

The latter answered without hesitation: "Very good! Sharp perception and observation, an intensely focused mental state during combat, and a beast-like sixth sense. If he trains persistently, it is only a matter of time before he surpasses me."

Hearing this, Allen shook his head gently. "No, what I meant was, through fighting Gon, did you notice any shortcomings in yourself, as a fellow Enhancer?"

"Shortcomings?" Bodoro paused, then frowned, deep in thought. "I have already comprehensively developed my Transmutation and Emission abilities. I am quite well-rounded in both offense and defense."

"Heh, being well-rounded is precisely your greatest shortcoming. Enhancement, as the name suggests, is the process of using Aura to enhance everything that can be enhanced, even some very abstract concepts. For an Enhancer, balance means mediocrity, and you fail to deliver a decisive blow in battle. Simply put, you lack a powerful trump card or ultimate technique. You've spent too much effort honing your Transmutation and Emission abilities, thereby neglecting your true Enhancement Nen. Otherwise, with your current Aura capacity, you would only need one punch to finish Gon, instead of wasting so much time on a war of attrition."

Allen pointed out the subtle trap the martial artist had unconsciously fallen into, a common mistake for many Nen users: developing sub-types as their main focus.

However, an Enhancer can use 80% of the strength of Transmutation and Emission, so there was no harm in practicing them early.

This was why he had noticed it long ago but hadn't pointed it out until now.

"Then how should I develop my Enhancement trump card?"

Recognizing that he had taken a wrong path, Bodoro immediately sought advice from the teacher who had taught him Nen.

"It's simple! Follow the deepest desire in your heart. Seriously consider what you truly need, and what you crave. Finally, convert that intense desire into tangible action, which means strengthening it through Aura. Ultimately, you will gain the ability that is most suitable for you," Allen suggested meaningfully.

After speaking, he turned and disappeared around the corner at the end of the corridor.

"The strongest desire deep in my heart..."

Just as Bodoro was lost in thought, Killua suddenly emerged from the hospital room and asked, surprised, "Where's Allen?"

The martial artist quickly looked up and replied, "He's already left. Is Gon alright?"

"Yeah, although he has a few broken ribs and some signs of internal bleeding, overall he's fine. The doctor estimates he'll wake up in about an hour or two. Also, about the Hunter Exam, I'm really sorry. I couldn't control myself back then."

Killua resolutely seized the opportunity of their being alone to apologize.

But Bodoro smiled dismissively. "You don't need to apologize; that wasn't your fault. Besides, I've never held a grudge against you for it."

"Huh? Really?"

Killua widened his eyes, finding it hard to believe that he was so easily forgiven after doing something so extreme.

"Of course! As a martial artist, you must have a broad mind. That was the first lesson my master taught me when I started learning the martial way. If you still feel guilty, then train hard and aim to stand in the ring soon and challenge me as a fighter. There's nothing more direct or easier for men to understand each other than the clash of fists," Bodoro said, offering his right fist, a faint smile on his face.

"Understood! But you'd better watch out. I'm very cunning, unlike Gon who's so straightforward. You might just lose to me in the ring," Killua said, bumping his right fist against Bodoro's, his whole demeanor instantly becoming lighter.

As an assassin, he could clearly sense that the man before him truly held no resentment whatsoever, and he felt a spontaneous warmth well up inside him.
