Chapter 7 - First Hunt into the Wild

The morning sun spilled across the training grounds, illuminating the Pantheon as they gathered near the mansion gates. Kairo flexed his fingers, feeling the familiar hum of Aether coursing through his veins. His mark pulsed faintly, a quiet reminder of both power and restraint. Around him, the others were buzzing with excitement, joking and teasing each other, though the laughter felt different this morning—more fragile, tempered by the unknown that awaited them.

"Last one to the forest buys dinner," Raijin shouted, leaping forward in a blur of electricity. Darius groaned and sprinted after him, water swirling around his boots as he moved. Kairo walked steadily, Selene at his side, her silver hair catching the light. "You move too slow," she teased, but there was a sparkle of amusement in her eyes. "Try not to trip over your own sparks."

Kairo's lips twitched, the smallest hint of a smile. "I don't need to try." He whispered his word, Voltis, and a controlled spark danced along his arm, lighting his path. Selene, silent but focused, cast Luna, and shadows flickered across the trees ahead, giving them subtle advantage against unseen obstacles.

As they entered the forest, the sounds of civilization faded, replaced by rustling leaves and distant calls of unknown creatures. The trees loomed tall and silent, ancient and watchful, as if they too were aware that this was no ordinary mission. Akairo's instructions echoed in their minds: Observe. Cooperate. Control your Aether. Fail, and the consequences are yours alone.

The first creature appeared as they reached a clearing—a minor god-linked beast, its body rippling like molten stone, eyes glowing faintly with divine energy. Raijin grinned, electricity sparking around him. "Finally! Let's see what you've got!"

Kairo took a steady breath. Voltis. Lightning surged along his arm, but he restrained it, careful not to overextend. The mark throbbed, reminding him that raw power alone could kill or maim, even his allies. Selene whispered Luna, and multiple illusions of Kairo flickered across the clearing, confusing the creature and giving him a chance to analyze its movements.

Darius and Raijin moved in tandem, water and lightning coordinating in a dazzling display. The creature roared, forcing them to adapt. Kali and Orion merged with shadows, striking from angles unseen, while Aurora's bursts of light cut through the forest gloom to distract and confuse their target. Every member's ability, every one-word chant, flowed together in a precise, dangerous dance.

Kairo felt exhilaration and focus mingling in equal measure. For the first time outside the mansion, his power felt raw and untamed, yet he maintained control. He could feel his mark burning faintly, testing his limits. As the creature lunged, he unleashed a controlled burst of Voltis, striking at the perfect moment, while Selene's illusions forced it into his path. Sparks and shadows collided, and with a final, coordinated strike from the team, the beast fell, harmlessly subdued but exhausted.

The Pantheon exhaled together, their laughter returning for a brief moment, though tempered by the gravity of the hunt. "Not bad for a first mission," Selene said, brushing dirt from her gloves. "Even storm boy didn't destroy the forest… much."

Kairo smirked faintly, the smallest spark of pride lighting his eyes. But beneath it, unease lingered. Something feels off, he thought. The creature had been minor, yet it had reacted in ways no training session could replicate. There's more out here than we know.

Akairo's voice cut across the clearing, carried by the wind though his figure remained unseen. "You performed adequately. But the wild does not forgive hesitation or error. Remember this lesson."

The words, cold and detached, settled in Kairo's chest like ice. He felt a flicker of something else, a shadow of resentment he could not name. But he swallowed it. Not yet. The Pantheon's first mission was complete, and they had survived, stronger and more united. Tomorrow, the forest would offer new challenges, and the lessons would grow harsher.

As they returned to the mansion, Kairo walked silently beside Selene. Her presence was steady, almost a counterbalance to the storm of his own thoughts. "You handled that well," she said quietly. "Don't let it get to your head."

"I won't," Kairo replied, though a shadow of doubt lingered behind his calm demeanor. Not yet. But soon… I'll know the truth. And when I do, everything changes
