Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

"Ugh…." I moaned as I woke up.

'Huh?... Oh. Did I fall asleep while I was reading the rules?" I asked Shekai

"No. You fell asleep after you were done reading the rules. Were they that boring to you?" he answered

Right… I did read them, I was honestly just tired of all the reading and thinking.

Regardless, this nap gave me a quick refreshment. I can now think about, how should I proceed?

I can't just go around and kill anyone I want.

I admit, when I first picked up this notebook, I was just curious if it's real. I never thought about what comes afterwards.

It's been ages since I've been stuck in this awful loop of doing the same things over and over again. I enjoyed them at first but now.. It's all just meaningless.

So, I wonder. If this could finally be the thing I can enjoy?

As I was lost in my thoughts, an annoying voice broke the silence. Ugh, seriously.

My sister was yelling again downstairs, something about losing a competition by half a point.

"She is… spirited," Shekai murmured from above my desk.

"That's one word, I guess." I muttered.

I kept listening to it. My ears just might start to bleed at this point. My dad tried telling her it was fine. And, she kept screaming.

As if he could read my thoughts, "Do you hate her?" Shekai asked.

"I don't hate her," I said. "But, I do hate what she represents."

"Your blood."

"..."

I glanced on my thighs, the Death Note sat half-open in my lap. Again resting, just like how I first found it. It wasn't tempting me like a devil. It just sat there… existing.

However, I could still hear it calling out for me

"She causes attention," I said quietly.

"She is trouble.. And she is too loud."

"Are you really thinking.. what I think you are thinking?," Shekai said, lantern-eyes flickered with amusement.

I traced one finger across the notebook cover.

"I can't test the Note properly," I muttered. "I can't go out without being questioned. And if I change my routine suddenly, they'll get suspicious."

"And… if she's gone,"

I continued, "this family will break. I know it. I know how much grief has affected this house.."

"If I just kill her… they'll drown in grief. They'll stop paying attention to me, thinking I'm grieving too. They'll give me alone time.. Thet will give me freedom.."

"And you are willing," Shekai asked, "to kill a sibling for that?"

"..."

I'm right. This is right. I really have to do it. And, I will do this right.

Shekai leaned down,

his skeleton neck twisting side to side, skeletal wings twitching like an eagle that has finally found its prey. With his ugly malicious eyes he stared at me.

"You are… interesting." he said

I waited until the house was quiet, ironically, the only time it ever was.

My sister was in her room, humming annoyingly, probably practicing for another one of those forced competitions she loves.

Shekai perched near the light fixture, upside down like a rotting bat. Cautiously reading the movements of my hands.

I flipped to a blank page.

"Accidental death," I said. "I can't just give a healthy child a heart attack and expect it to be believable. But, something like falling fits a mischievous nuisance like her."

'Shiina - Falls down the main staircase at home at 18:27, hitting her head. Dies instantly.' I wrote.

6 minutes and 40 seconds to change the details. I didn't. I didn't have to. This is perfect as it should be.

"She will fall," Shekai said.

"I know."

[18:26]

I placed the notebook down and walked out of my room calmly. I made my way down the hallway with soft steps.

My sister opened her door, her hair was messy, she was holding a paper she wanted to show our parents.

Probably, test results. Who cares?

"Oh, you're here," she said, not really caring.

Funny how she acts like I'm the problem.

But, oh well. Might as well let her act however she wants in her last moments.

[18:26:58]

Soon after the quick end to our meet. She started running. Of course she did.

Her sock caught the edge of the carpet.

And one misstep was all it took.

One moment of gravity working in my favor.

She slipped and tumbled forward towards the rocky floor. The sound echoed through the house. It was sharp, sickening, and heavy.

My father came running to inspect the sound and froze after seeing her lay motionless in her own blood..

Her neck was at a wrong angle, her eyes were wide but empty.

Shekai leaned behind me, unseen by all but me.

"Humans die so easily," he whispered.

"..."

After confirming her death, I made my way back to my room as the tearful screams of my father and sounds of his sweaty but desperate hands tried to call the medics filled my ears.

After locking myself up in the room, I couldn't help but be glad that she's gone.
