Chapter 62 - I Want a Child

Sun Zhewen went to Director Ding's office. He wanted to ask Director Ding for his opinions on the Police Station and how work was progressing.

"Director Ding, come on, have a smoke," Sun Zhewen offered a cigarette.

Director Ding took the cigarette, lit it, took a deep drag, and spoke freely, "Xiao Sun, the work in our Police Station isn't simple. The surrounding area has a complex security situation, with a large mobile population, and all sorts of disputes and cases are constantly arising. However, the comrades in our station are all very hardworking and responsible. But, sometimes, the resources are limited, and manpower is insufficient, so it's often difficult to handle many things."

Sun Zhewen listened attentively, nodding occasionally.

Director Ding continued, "Like those petty theft cases, although they're not big, they're numerous, and it takes time and effort to handle them. Then there are the conflicts between neighbors, which are sometimes harder to mediate than solving major cases."

Sun Zhewen asked, "Director Ding, what do you think is the most pressing problem our station needs to solve right now?"

Director Ding flicked the ash from his cigarette, thought for a moment, and said, "I think, first, we need to strengthen our connections with the masses and raise their awareness of prevention; second, we need to improve the professional skills of the comrades in our station, and organize more training and learning; and third, we need to strive for more resources, such as increasing police force and improving equipment."

Sun Zhewen said thoughtfully, "Director Ding, you're absolutely right. As for work allocation and collaboration, do you have any suggestions?"

Director Ding smiled, "Well, that depends on everyone's strengths and experience. For example, Xiao Zhang is good at handling civil disputes, and Xiao Li has experience with criminal cases. We need to allocate tasks reasonably and make the most of everyone's advantages. Also, teamwork is very important. When we encounter major cases, everyone needs to work together."

Sun Zhewen took notes as he listened, saying, "Director Ding, your experience is truly valuable. I need to learn from you."

Director Ding waved his hand, "Xiao Sun, don't say that. In the future, the work in the Police Station will rely on young people like you to take on more responsibilities."

After Sun Zhewen left, Director Ding's face darkened as he muttered to himself, "I wonder what kind of person this Deputy Director Sun is. Or is he sent by the higher-ups to keep an eye on me?"

Director Ding said this because he had once been a righteous person, but after his family was threatened, he had been slacking off. He couldn't handle major issues and found minor ones uninteresting. So when Chen Qingyan asked him to give Sun as much authority as possible, he agreed without hesitation. If it weren't for some job subsidies, he would rather be a police officer, following orders and letting the higher-ups take responsibility for any problems. This woman, Chen Qingyan, was said to be Secretary Liu's wife, but she was rarely seen with Secretary Liu. He didn't know if this woman was on Secretary Liu's side. The situation in the small county was very clear: Secretary Liu had the final say. Now, since the Town Party Secretary asked him to delegate authority, he would. Director Ding kept the financial power in his hands, and let Sun Zhewen handle the rest.

Sun Zhewen sat in his office, pondered for a moment, and decided to call the office director. He picked up the phone on his desk and dialed the office director's extension, "Hello, is this Director Wang from the office? This is Sun Zhewen. Could you please come to my office?"

A moment later, Office Director Wang knocked on the door and entered, a respectful smile on his face, "Deputy Director Sun, you called for me?"

Sun Zhewen put down his pen and pointed to the chair opposite him, "Director Wang, come, sit down first. It's like this, I want you to help me get the case files of the unsolved cases in our Police Station over the years. I'll study them to see if I can find some new clues or ideas."

Director Wang was slightly taken aback, then nodded. "Alright, Deputy Director Sun. But there's quite a lot here, it might take me some time to organize them."

Sun Zhewen nodded. "No problem, just get it done as soon as you can. Thanks for your hard work, Director Wang."

After Director Wang left, Sun Zhewen continued to handle other work, but his mind was still occupied by those unsolved cases.

Two days later, Director Wang walked into Sun Zhewen's office, carrying a stack of thick files, sweat beading on his forehead. "Deputy Director Sun, here are the files you requested. They took me quite a bit of effort."

Sun Zhewen immediately stood up and took a portion of the files. "Director Wang, I really appreciate it. Come on, let's put these on the table first."

Director Wang wiped his sweat and said, "Deputy Director Sun, with your diligence and responsibility, our Police Station has a good chance of solving these cases."

Sun Zhewen smiled. "We still need everyone's hard work. I'll take a look at these files first."

Sun Zhewen buried himself in the files. He didn't notice the case file of the holdout on Purple Cloud Mountain. He carefully reviewed each document, not missing any details, making careful notes as he went. Sometimes, he would frown and ponder for a long time over a suspicious point; other times, his eyes would light up when he discovered a clue.

In the afternoon, Sun Zhewen finished reading through a portion of the files. He rubbed his tired eyes and dialed Director Wang's number again. "Director Wang, could you come over again, please?"

Soon, Director Wang was back in Sun Zhewen's office.

"Director Wang, I appreciate you coming over again. Here's the situation. I've reviewed these files and found that some information is incomplete. Could you help me supplement some of the related materials? For example, photos of the crime scene, or detailed witness statements," Sun Zhewen said.

Director Wang looked a little hesitant. "Sun, there is some old information that might be difficult to find."

Sun Zhewen nodded in understanding. "Find as much as you can, as much as possible. Also, I'd like you to find the list of local thugs from our jurisdiction, the more detailed the better. In addition, I heard that not long ago, our Police Station discovered a traffic accident where someone died, and it wasn't considered a traffic accident. Why isn't that case here?"

Director Wang replied, "Okay, Sun. I'll take care of it right away. That case is now with the County Criminal Police Team. All our materials have been handed over to the Criminal Police Team, so we didn't keep the case files."

Nearing the end of the workday, Director Wang came to Sun Zhewen's office with the compiled list of thugs.

"Sun, here's the list of thugs you requested," Director Wang handed over a piece of paper.

Sun Zhewen took the list and examined it carefully: "Director Wang, how much do you know about the backgrounds of these people?"

Director Wang thought for a moment: "Deputy Director Sun, I'm familiar with some, and I've only heard about others. For example, this Li Qiang, he often gets into fights on the street, but he's never been caught red-handed. And this Zhang Hua, he's rumored to be involved with some illegal businessmen."

Sun Zhewen made notes as he listened and then said, "Director Wang, the information you've provided is very helpful. Next, we need to study how to start from these clues and strive to solve some of those unsolved cases."

After work, he dragged his tired body straight back to his rented room. He had just sat down, hadn't even had time to drink a glass of water, when Chen Qingyan came over in a flurry. She was wearing a fashionable trench coat and a pair of large sunglasses, looking mysterious and alluring.

After entering the room, Chen Qingyan said nothing and threw herself directly into Sun Zhewen's arms, kissing him passionately, "Honey, I've been waiting for this moment all day. I miss you so much. Honey, let me have a child."

Sun Zhewen frowned, his face showing worry, "But what if he finds out?"
