Chapter 18 - Core

I darted to the other side of the pitch, waiting for Kanade to get the ball. But for some reason I couldn't see it, to me there was no possible way for him to score. In order to beat him I have to see what he sees, to ascend to a level only God's chosen can achieve. I have to achieve the state I achieved during the scrimmage. That's the only way, the only solution to this problem. I'll burn everything. Everything in the way of my burning desire.

"This is my top performance."

"Oh really?"

Kanade got the ball and immediately cut behind me, only to get interrupted by Jaylon.

"Show me this top performance, Sakura. I would love to see it."

Kanade tipped the ball into the air and jumped over our king. I can't rely on others, leave my goal in the hands of others. I get what I want, whenever I want, and the only reason for that IS ME!

I crashed into Kanade but he nutmegged me and spun his body around me.

"Mediocre, now call for help like you've always had."

I crashed into the floor and yelled on top of my lungs.

"YOICHI!"

A shining ray of hope slid in front of Kanade, blocking all of his passing routes. Me and Jaylon shot up and ran in front of the goal to cover one of the other teams strikers.

The field began to turn gold and my flames burned with intensity. But everything suddenly went dark when the sound of Kanade kicking the ball full force rang through all of our ears.

The ball flew underneath Yoichi's legs and flew right past my face. Jaylon smirked and with his golden wings he flew up and attempted to clear the ball. But the ball was only barely high enough for Jaylon to miss.

No…he only passed to make us believe he couldn't shoot. It was all according to his plan, every mistake, every pass. We…we're just mortals in the game made for gods. The ball crashed into the net and blew out everybody's flames. Kanade turned and pointed down at me as I looked up to him from hell.

"Being at the level of a middle schooler at your age is bringing shame to our name. Maybe you should just let Ray teach you how to play. I'm pretty sure she could do something to improve that disgraceful blood of yours. The son of a failure who plans to kill himself because he couldn't fulfill his desires. Disgusting, disgraceful, immature. Sakura, join your father and die alongside your dream."

Kanade walked away without looking back. Because to him, I was an object of the past. There was no point in looking back at something so tedious.
