Chapter 22 - Chapter 20 – “Beyond the Smoke”

The morning sun reflected off the ocean surrounding Cinnabar Island, painting the Gym in warm, golden hues. The volcano had finally calmed, the scorched forest beginning its slow recovery under Roserade and Leafeon's careful attention. It was quiet, almost deceptively calm. But in the world beyond the island, disturbances were rising.

Infernape stretched lazily at my side, flames flickering along his wrists in soft arcs. Today, however, there would be no long, controlled training sessions. Today, I would depart the island for the first mission beyond Kanto—a mission requested personally by Lance and coordinated through Looker's international network.

Lila and Kai were already on the Gym balcony, overseeing a training session for the supporting trainers. Arcanine stood alert beside Lila, while Electivire crackled lightly under Kai's guidance. Supporting Pokémon—Quagsire, Leafeon, Charmeleon, and Umbreon—moved fluidly between exercises, following the siblings' commands with precision and care.

I watched for a moment, pride swelling quietly. "They've come a long way," I muttered to Infernape, who nodded with a flick of his head. "And now, it's time to trust them fully."

Lila turned, her golden eyes meeting mine. "Alex… are you sure you have to go so far?" Her voice was calm, but I could detect a trace of worry.

I knelt briefly, resting my hands on her shoulders. "I have to. Looker and Lance need my expertise, and if this isn't handled properly, the disturbances could spread beyond just Kanto. But I trust you both to manage the Gym. Everything we've practiced—the coordination, the Pokémon leadership, the supporting trainers—you're ready."

Kai shifted, Electivire sparking in response. "We've got this. You'll be back before we know it. And don't worry, the Gym won't collapse while you're gone!" He grinned, though I could see a mixture of excitement and nerves in his expression.

"Good," I said. "I expect updates. Every day. And if something critical happens, I'll return immediately. Understood?"

They nodded firmly. "Understood," Lila said. "We'll handle it."

Before departure, I conducted a final inspection of the Gym. Ceruledge floated alongside me, blade humming softly, while Hydreigon and Garchomp patrolled the perimeter. Roserade's vines twisted protectively around recently planted seedlings, while Talonflame circled overhead, eyes sharp for any movement.

Infernape stayed close, flames now calm, ready for the journey. "You'll do fine," I murmured. "And no unnecessary heroics while I'm gone."

The supporting trainers gathered near the Gym entrance. Theo, Mira, Jax, and Rina had already coordinated their Pokémon, preparing to take full operational responsibility alongside my siblings.

"Remember," I said, "this isn't just about defense. It's about training, coordination, and leadership. Each Pokémon and each trainer has a role. Trust your instincts, communicate, and above all—keep the Gym functioning as one organism."

The trainers nodded, eyes bright and determined. I could see their growth—the months of rebuilding, coordination drills, and teamwork had prepared them for this moment.

The ocean breeze carried a faint scent of salt and ash as I stepped onto the path toward the dock. Infernape's flames flickered higher, as if sensing the mission ahead.

A sleek boat, equipped for international missions, awaited us. A member of Looker's team waved from the deck. "Alex," he called, "ready for departure?"

I glanced back at the Gym one last time. Lila's hand rested on Arcanine's mane, Kai's Electivire sparking gently beside him. Supporting trainers moved Pokémon through final drills, each command executed with precision. The Gym was alive and functioning, independent of me for the first time.

"Yes," I replied, determination settling in my chest. "Let's go."

As the boat cut through the waves, Infernape perched on the bow, wind ruffling his fur. I reflected on the past months—returning home after four years, taking over the Gym after our parents' passing, rebuilding the facility, training my siblings, and coordinating our Pokémon in emergency situations like the volcano eruption. Each moment had prepared me for this.

A comms device buzzed at my wrist. Looker's voice came through, calm but urgent. "Alex, we've received reports of unusual activity in Hoenn. Temperatures fluctuating near volcanic zones, rare Pokémon appearing outside their usual habitats, and small tremors reported near the Magma and Aqua bases. We need your expertise on-site."

I nodded, eyes narrowing. "Understood. Send coordinates and a full environmental report. I'll assess once I arrive."

Infernape gave a sharp nod, understanding the gravity of the mission. "We'll need to act fast, but strategically. No unnecessary risks."

The boat arrived at Hoenn's southern coast hours later. I stepped onto the dock, Infernape leaping gracefully beside me. The scent of tropical forests mixed with distant ash and smoke—a reminder that the natural balance here was fragile.

Waiting for us was a local coordinator, a Hoenn Gym Leader named Terra. Her team of Pokémon—Flygon, Ludicolo, and Torkoal—stood ready, eyes sharp with anticipation. "Alex," she said, bowing slightly, "we've heard of your work in Kanto. We need your guidance to stabilize these zones before the disturbances escalate."

I nodded, releasing Infernape fully. "First, we assess. Then we act. Let's map the tremors, identify hotspots, and coordinate Pokémon deployment. We'll need aerial recon, ground stabilization, and rapid-response teams."

Hydreigon and Garchomp were already released, circling to scan the area. Talonflame hovered, flames under control, providing wind patterns and aerial oversight. Ceruledge floated beside me, blade humming lightly, ready for intervention.

Hours into reconnaissance, patterns became apparent. Minor lava flows threatened small settlements, unusual Pokémon migrations were destabilizing ecosystems, and Hoenn trainers struggled to manage the chaos.

I turned to Terra. "We'll need local trainers in squads—some for evacuation, some for Pokémon management, and some for environmental stabilization. Everyone moves with purpose. No improvisation unless absolutely necessary."

Terra nodded, sending commands to her team. Flygon soared high, scouting, while Ludicolo and Torkoal prepared to manage terrain and fire hazards.

Infernape stayed at my side, flames controlled and precise, while Hydreigon and Garchomp coordinated with Talonflame to monitor high-risk zones.

By late evening, initial stabilization efforts were underway. Minor lava flows were diverted, displaced Pokémon were safely guided, and local settlements had emergency protocols in place. But as I looked toward the horizon, I knew this was only the beginning.

A faint tremor shook the ground beneath us. Infernape crouched low, flames flickering in anticipation. "This isn't over," I murmured. "Whatever's causing this imbalance is escalating. And we're the ones who have to fix it."

Terra nodded, releasing Torkoal fully. "We're ready to follow your lead, Alex. Show us how it's done."

I allowed a small, grim smile. "This is going to be bigger than any Gym challenge. But with strategy, coordination, and the right Pokémon, we can handle it."

Hydreigon circled overhead, wings catching the setting sun. Garchomp's claws dug into the ground lightly, surveying the area. Ceruledge floated at my side, blade humming in silent readiness. Infernape's flames danced, reflecting my resolve.

The mission beyond Kanto had officially begun. And as the Hoenn sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with streaks of crimson and gold, I realized one undeniable truth: the world was bigger than any Gym, any volcano, any single challenge.
