Charlie had no idea what was going on, he'd just woken up. That seamless response? Just another one of his survival skills.
As long as he heard his name in class, he could snap awake instantly and look like he'd never even dozed off.
He blinked a few times, brain kicking into overdrive.
The classroom was full of chanted spells and classmates waving their wands, he immediately understood what was going on.
"Transfigure the match into a needle, Professor," Charlie replied with calm certainty.
Professor McGonagall's brow arched slightly, surprise flickering in her eyes.
"If you knew the assignment, then why haven't you started yet, Mr. White?"
Charlie flashed a confident smile.
"Because I already know how to do it, Professor."
The entire room fell into stunned silence.
Even McGonagall blinked. Every student turned their heads, eyes locked on Charlie.
Ernie and Justin's jaws nearly hit the floor, they'd watched this guy sleep through the entire class!
Great. Not only did he nap in class, now he's lying to the professor. He's doomed.
Professor McGonagall pressed her lips together, her tone cooling.
She remembered Charlie well, after all, she was the one who personally welcomed him into the wizarding world.
She had quite a favorable impression of him.
But if there was one thing she couldn't stand, it was dishonesty in her classroom.
"Is that so?" Her voice sharpened. "Then by all means, show us."
The classroom fell completely silent. Every eye was on Charlie.
Ernie's palms were drenched in sweat, worried sick about his new roommate.
But Charlie didn't flinch. He simply picked up his wand and gave it a casual flick.
"Transfigure to silver needle."
The matchstick on his desk quivered, then, right before their eyes, it shimmered and transformed into a gleaming silver needle.
Everyone in the class gasped. Even Professor McGonagall's eyes widened.
She stepped forward, picked up the needle, and examined it closely, flawless craftsmanship, not a single trace of the original matchstick.
"Impressive work, Mr. White," she said, her tone finally showing a hint of genuine surprise.
She hadn't expected Charlie to actually know Transfiguration, especially not this early on. Even most pure-blood students struggled with this in their first lesson.
For a muggle-born to pull this off on day one?
She could only assume he had studied diligently over the summer.
Thinking this, her gaze softened slightly.
Professor McGonagall admired hardworking students more than anything.
"Hufflepuff earns five points for Mr. White's outstanding Transfiguration work," she announced, then addressed the class:
"Do you see this? This is what happens when you review ahead of time and practice diligently."
Ernie and Justin sat frozen in disbelief.
You're telling me... he slept the whole class and still got points?
The bell rang.
Charlie was finally fully awake.
Professor McGonagall tucked her wand away and addressed the class once more.
"For homework, I expect everyone to practice transforming your matches into silver needles and write an essay on the theory behind the process. I will check your progress next lesson."
The students began packing up.
Justin moaned about how hard it all sounded, he'd never written an essay before.
As the three of them walked out of the classroom, Ernie kept rambling about how insanely talented Charlie was.
Back in the Hufflepuff common room, Charlie plopped down in a cozy corner and opened his system log.
"Hey, Little System, what'd I draw last night?"
[Reporting to Your Majesty. Last night you drew: +20 Floating Charm proficiency, +100 Flock of Birds proficiency, +50 Transfiguration proficiency, Animagus...]
The system rattled off a long list so fast it made Charlie's head spin.
"Okay, okay, slow down, what's this Animagus thing about?"
[Animagus is an advanced form of Transfiguration allowing a wizard to transform into a specific animal. It's an extremely rare ability, there are fewer than seven registered Animagi in the entire British wizarding world.]
Charlie's eyes lit up.
"You mean I can turn into an animal?! In that case, I want to be a dragon"
[Apologies, Your Majesty. System-generated Animagus forms can include magical creatures, but they must exist within this world's lore.]
Charlie slapped his thigh in disappointment.
"Well, what's the point then?"
Justin, seated beside him, yelped and rubbed his leg. "Can you please slap your own leg?"
Charlie shrugged. "Fine. You can copy my homework."
"Dad, slap me two more times just to be sure, I want to really understand what I'm copying."
Justin's expression flipped instantly. Charlie's Transfiguration skills were legit, no way he'd pass up copying from him.
Ignoring Justin, Charlie continued to ponder.
Originally, he'd wanted to become a divine dragon, able to fly, dive into oceans, and beat the crap out of anyone.
But if it had to be a creature from this world...
[Your Majesty needn't be disappointed. There are many powerful magical beasts in this world too, such as fire dragons, thunderbirds...]
Fire dragons, huh?
Charlie rubbed his hands together. "Then I pick fire dragon"
[Available fire dragon types include: Antipodean Opaleye, Hungarian Horntail, Eastern Fireball...]
"No need to say more, Eastern Fireball," Charlie interrupted immediately.
That name just felt close to home.
[Confirm selection: Eastern Fireball as Animagus form? This choice is permanent.]
"Confirmed" Charlie said without hesitation.
[Selection complete. Your Majesty's Animagus form has been set to Eastern Fireball. Due to system enhancement, you may transform immediately, no training required.]
Charlie's heart thumped.
The moment he thought of flying through the skies, his entire being tingled with excitement.
What kid hadn't dreamed of flying?
Charlie stood up and turned to Ernie and Justin. "I'm going out for some air. You guys start on the homework."
"You want us to come?" Ernie asked.
"Nope. I'll just walk a bit." Charlie waved and quickly left the common room.
His steps grew faster and faster, his destination clear.
The Forbidden Forest.
No people.
Perfect for testing out a new power.
