Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Mark of the Vampire

The shared dreams and the growing sense of danger forged a stronger bond between Elias and Lord Valerius. They spent hours discussing the ancient texts, searching for clues about the ritual and the identity of those who sought to perform it. Lord Valerius, now trusting Elias implicitly, shared more about his past, his fears, and the burden of his immortality.

One evening, as they were examining a particularly ancient scroll, Elias noticed a small, almost imperceptible symbol etched into the parchment. The symbol was a stylized depiction of a bat, its wings spread wide. He had seen the symbol before, in the forbidden chamber, on one of the grimoires bound in human skin.

"My Lord," Elias said, pointing to the symbol. "Have you seen this before? It seems… familiar."

Lord Valerius leaned closer, his expression growing dark. "That is the mark of the Dracul," he said, his voice low. "An ancient order of vampires, known for their cruelty, their power, and their obsession with forbidden knowledge."

Elias felt a chill run down his spine. "Vampires?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "You mean… like in the stories?"

Lord Valerius nodded slowly. "The stories are often embellished, but the truth is… I am one of them."

Elias stared at Lord Valerius in disbelief. He had suspected something was different about the vampire lord, but he had never imagined the truth was so… fantastical.

"But… how is that possible?" Elias stammered. "Vampires are just… myths, legends. They can't be real."

Lord Valerius sighed. "We are very real, Master Elias. We are creatures of the night, sustained by blood, cursed with immortality. We have walked the earth for centuries, hidden in the shadows, preying on the unsuspecting."

He paused, then looked at Elias with a deep sadness in his eyes. "I understand if you are repulsed by this revelation. I would not blame you if you wanted to leave, to never see me again."

Elias was indeed repulsed, but he was also fascinated. He had always been drawn to the unusual, the mysterious, the things that defied explanation. And Lord Valerius, with his dark secrets and his immortal nature, was the most fascinating thing he had ever encountered.

"I'm not going to leave," Elias said, his voice surprisingly firm. "I may not understand everything about vampires, but I know that you are not a monster. You are a man who has been cursed, a man who is trying to do the right thing."

Lord Valerius looked at Elias, his eyes filled with gratitude. "You are more accepting than I deserve, Master Elias," he said. "But I must warn you, knowing the truth about me puts you in danger. The Dracul are a powerful and ruthless order. If they discover that you know about their mark, they will stop at nothing to silence you."

Elias swallowed hard. "I understand the risks," he said. "But I'm willing to take them. I want to help you stop the ritual, to protect you from those who seek to harm you."

Lord Valerius reached out and gently touched Elias's cheek. "You are a brave and loyal friend, Master Elias," he said. "I am honored to have you by my side."

He paused, then lowered his voice. "But there is something else you must know about vampires," he said. "Something that may change the way you feel about me forever."

He leaned closer to Elias, his breath warm against his ear. "We have… needs, Master Elias," he whispered. "Needs that cannot be ignored. Needs that… involve blood."

Elias felt a shiver run down his spine. He knew what Lord Valerius was implying. He knew that vampires needed blood to survive, and that sooner or later, Lord Valerius would need to feed.

He looked into Lord Valerius's eyes, searching for any sign of malice, any hint of predatory intent. But all he saw was a deep sadness, a desperate plea for understanding.

"I understand," Elias said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I need time to process this. I need time to decide what I'm willing to do."

Lord Valerius nodded slowly. "Of course," he said. "I would never force you to do anything you didn't want to do. But please, Master Elias, be careful. The Dracul are watching us. And they will not hesitate to strike when we least expect it."
