Chapter 13 - DINNER

After Jennifer's unexpected exit from the company, whispers began to spread within the empire like wildfire. It started as murmurs in the corridors, escalated to hushed voices in boardrooms, and finally made its way into full-blown rumors. Staff at Kyle's company passed it along like a contagious fever, Kyle Wade had a secret wife. Some said she was hidden away. Others claimed they had seen her before, and one bold employee even leaked a blurry CCTV clip showing Jennifer arriving at the Empire's private headquarters. The caption beneath it read in bold, flashing font:

"KYLE WADE'S SECRET WIFE FINALLY REVEALED."

By nightfall, it was all over social media, gossip blogs, and even news outlets hungry for a billionaire scandal. The footage showed Jennifer striding into the building with confidence, wearing an elegant dress and sunglasses, smirking as if she already owned the place. She had introduced herself to reception as "Mrs. Wade," and that was all it took. The cameras did the rest.

The soft clinking of cutlery echoed faintly as I arranged the final plate on the dinner table. The scent of grilled chicken and creamy mashed potatoes filled the air, and a gentle warmth spread from the candles I'd lit to soften the mood. It's been a week since I got married and I wanted to make something for Kyle with my hand. I stepped back to admire my simple setup, brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

Just then, I heard the door open.

Kyle walked in, composed as always. That signature calm aura cloaked him, his expression unreadable, cold, yet never unkind when it came to me. His dark eyes briefly met mine, and for a fleeting second, I saw the tenderness behind them. It always slipped through, no matter how tightly he tried to contain it.

"Welcome home," I said softly, approaching him. I took his bag and set it gently on the chair beside him "Come on. Sit. Dinner's ready."

He sat down with a quiet sigh, his eyes a little distant.

"You don't seem alright," I said, taking the seat opposite him. I caught the subtle scent of whiskey on his breath.

"Stress from work," he replied curtly, not meeting my gaze.

I smiled faintly, not pushing further. "Alright. I cooked tonight, so dig in. I figured we could talk while we ate."

"You really don't have to cook," he murmured, reaching for his fork. "There are enough chefs in this house for ten people."

"I know," I said, giving a small shrug. "But I wanted to cook for you. Besides… I have something I wanted to talk about." My phone chimed with notifications but I simply ignored it

Kyle paused and looked up, the flicker of curiosity in his eyes. "What is it you want?"

I parted my lips to speak but my phone kept chiming again and again with notifications pouring in, I frowned and picked my phone up to turn it off but my eyes caught the headline

"Kyle Wade's Wife Finally Unveiled"

And there it was , Jennifer's face, smiling as she stepped into SKY TECH.

The familiar ache crept into my chest, but I didn't say a word, my heart sank. I blinked, my appetite vanishing as my hands slowly lowered the phone back onto the table. I didn't say a word, my voice was gone. I had questions, but they choked me.

Kyle noticed instantly and picked my phone, he looked at it. "Medley?" he asked, concern tightening his voice.

I forced a weak smile. "It's nothing. I just remembered something I need to do."

"Wait!!" Kyle started, standing to follow her.

But I was already up and retreating to the stairs. "I said it's nothing," I snapped,

"Let me explain" came his voice, stopping me midway up and finally turning to face him. "Why did you make me your wife if you already had one? Or do you just… just... do that? Make any woman you meet your wife?"

His lips parted in shock. "No, Medley. It's not what it looks like, the lady in the headline she's not..."

"I don't want to hear it," I said, my voice trembling. "Whatever this is, whatever you two had or still have, don't drag me into it."

With that said I turned and walked away, leaving Kyle staring at the staircase, I went to my room and locked the door behind me
