Chapter 19 - Chapter 19

"Undefeated?"

Hearing that, Yusaku clicked his tongue.

Tch.

There are four monsters on the field. Only Judgment Dragon has any real bite—and that's with an Equip on it.

"You call that 'undefeated'? Just like I thought, you're on pure Lightsworn. Worth the wait—you finally dragged Judgment Dragon out."

"...Huh?" Tanaka blinked.

Yusaku raised a hand. "Graveyard effect—Albion the Branded Dragon. During your turn, while this card's in my GY, I target a 'Fallen of Albaz' in my GY. Special Summon either that target or this card, and banish the other."

"I milled Fallen of Albaz earlier with Guiding Quem, the Virtuous, so I Special Summon Fallen of Albaz and banish Albion."

Fallen of Albaz — ATK 2000

"Fallen of Albaz, effect!"

"I discard Branded in High Spirits, then use Albaz and your Judgment Dragon on the field as Fusion Materials—send both to the GY!"

A crimson vortex flowered above the lanes.

Tanaka froze. In my turn, using my monster as your Fusion material?!

He opened his mouth—then his Judgment Dragon and Yusaku's Albaz both turned into golden light and were pulled into the swirling fusion gate.

"...?!"

A roar split the air. A red dragon, sheathed in searing flame, burst from the vortex and screamed down at Tanaka.

Albion the Branded Dragon — Level 8 / Dragon / Fusion — ATK 2500

"My monster..." Tanaka started, but Yusaku cut in.

"Hold that thought. I'm not done resolving."

"Chain Guiding Quem, the Virtuous—also chain Albion the Branded Dragon."

"Resolve Albion first."

"When Albion is Fusion Summoned: I can banish Fusion materials from hand/field/GY to Fusion Summon another Level 8 or lower Fusion, except itself. I banish Fallen of Albaz and Dracotail Mululu from my GY—"

"Fusion Summon! Level 8—Lubellion the Searing Dragon!"

A steel-plated dragon surged out of a pillar of fire, bellowing as it hit the field.

Lubellion the Searing Dragon — Level 8 / Dragon / Fusion — ATK 2700

"Now resolve Guiding Quem. When a card leaves the Extra Deck, I can target a 'Fallen of Albaz' or a monster that mentions it in my GY and Special Summon it. Since Albion just came from the Extra, I Special Summon Blazing Cartesia, the Virtuous!"

A white-haired saint in a crimson gown stepped forth, sacred blade in hand.

Blazing Cartesia, the Virtuous — Level 4 / Spellcaster / Tuner — ATK 1500

"Chain again—Lubellion, then Cartesia!"

"Cartesia first: during the Main Phase (Quick), I Fusion Summon a Level 8+ Fusion using monsters from hand/field."

Yusaku swept two cards off his Duel Disk.

"I use Lubellion the Searing Dragon and Albion the Branded Dragon—Fusion Summon!"

"Descend—Protostar Dragon of the Void!!!"

Starlight rained like silver needles. A silver-white giant with crystalline wings corkscrewed skyward, tore the clouds, then dove like a meteor.

Protostar Dragon of the Void — Level 8 / Dragon / Fusion — ATK 2500

"Now resolve Lubellion: on Fusion Summon, discard 1, then shuffle back monsters from field/GY/banish to Fusion Summon another Level 8 or lower Fusion."

He flicked his last hand card to the GY.

"I return my banished Fallen of Albaz and Albion the Branded Dragon to the Deck—"

"Fusion Summon! Level 8—Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon!"

A dragon of gleaming ice ripped free of the vortex and slammed down, loosing a glacial roar toward Tanaka.

Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon — Level 8 / Wyrm / Fusion — ATK 3000

"Effects—Mirrorjade, chain Protostar Dragon of the Void!"

"Resolve Protostar first. On Fusion Summon, I target up to the number of LIGHT/DARK monsters used as its materials and destroy that many of your cards. I used LIGHT (Albion) and DARK (Lubellion), so I pop two."

"Your Wulf, Lightsworn Beast and Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn—gone."

The crystal-winged dragon took flight and unfurled its wings. A blistering torrent swept the field, swallowing Wulf and Raiden to ash.

"Not over."

"I send Titaniklad the Ash Dragon from my Extra Deck to the GY to activate Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon—banish your last monster, Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior, face-down!"

Shards of ice exploded outward, perforating Garoth. The warrior twisted, then shattered into glittering frost and vanished.

Silence.

The gathered duelists stared, mouths open. Too much had happened too fast. Two minutes ago, Tanaka had a full board and Yusaku only a 1500-ATK body. Now Tanaka's field was empty—his 'invincible' Judgment Dragon had been eaten as Fusion material—and Yusaku's field was stacked, all during Tanaka's turn.

"Can someone explain what just happened?" someone croaked.

"I left for two minutes and Tanaka had a board. How's it empty—and why is the other guy's field flooded? Isn't this still Tanaka's turn?!"

"I get it now!" a voice rang out.

Everyone turned to the strangely dressed guy.

Yusaku (the spectator) spoke up. "Yusaku-senpai could've fired effects as soon as the first summon came down, but he waited to confirm the deck. When he trib—er, cycled out his own Fusion mid-line, he was setting up. Once Judgment Dragon hit, he committed—stripped the last card from Tanaka's hand, fused away the ace, and—did you notice..."

He paused for drama.

"Yusaku-senpai's four bodies total 8500 ATK. Tanaka has no monsters, no hand. Next turn is still ours—he can just swing for game. What a line!"

The crowd finally caught up.

So Yusaku let the opponent build—both to burn Tanaka's resources and to hand him the materials he wanted.

"...Did I really plan that far?" Yusaku blinked, a little puzzled. Did I?

On the field, Tanaka stood frozen, staring at the empty space where his monsters had been. A moment ago he was miles ahead—now it was hopeless. No field, no hand, and it would be Yusaku's turn next. The duel was already over.
