Chapter 6 - 6. Edge of the abyss

The cold bit into Eliana's skin as the dawn barely filtered through the narrow window of her chamber. The shackles still pressed painfully against her wrists, but the physical torment was no longer her greatest burden. It was the gnawing uncertainty, the shadow of what might come next, that consumed her thoughts.

The Moreaux estate was alive with secrets, its walls holding whispers and shadows that twisted around every corner. Each day brought new challenges, not only in body but in mind and spirit.

Jarek was waiting outside when the door creaked open. His gaze was steady but unreadable, a constant reminder that he was both her captor and her harshest teacher.

"Today," he said without preamble, "you learn to embrace the edge."

Eliana's brow furrowed. The phrase carried a weight she wasn't sure she was ready for.

They moved through the twisting corridors until they reached a secluded training yard she had never seen before. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and iron. A single figure awaited them, standing silent and still, a man whose reputation was whispered with fear and respect.

"This is Victor," Jarek said, voice low. "He tests those who serve Damien. You'll prove yourself to him."

Victor was a giant of a man, muscles coiled like steel springs beneath weathered skin. His eyes, cold and unflinching, locked onto Eliana as if weighing her very soul.

Without a word, the trial began.

Victor's strikes came swift and brutal, each one designed to break her spirit. Eliana dodged and parried, every movement a desperate dance between survival and defeat. Pain exploded in her ribs as a blow landed, but she forced herself to rise, fueled by a burning refusal to fall.

Jarek's voice rang out, calm but commanding. "Control your fear. Focus."

The battle raged until Eliana's body screamed in protest. Sweat poured down her face, muscles trembling, but she refused to yield.

Finally, Victor stepped back, a faint nod the only acknowledgment of her endurance.

"You have fire," he said simply.

Eliana's chest heaved, exhaustion mingling with a fierce pride. This was more than training, it was baptism by fire.

Later, as she tended to bruises in her chamber, Eliana's mind replayed the day's ordeal. Every strike, every dodge, every gasp for breath felt etched into her skin.

The trial had been a test, not just of strength, but of will. And she had passed.

That night, the estate was eerily quiet. Eliana lay awake, listening to the distant echoes of footsteps and whispered plans.

Her thoughts drifted to Damien, the man whose icy gaze had haunted her dreams.

What secrets did he hide behind that cold mask?

Was there something more beneath the surface, a reason for the ruthless control, the merciless demands?

Eliana knew one thing for certain: she was no longer the frightened girl who had arrived at the Moreaux estate.

She was walking the edge of an abyss, and the fall was inevitable.

But she would not go quietly.
