I've been thinking about something and I want to share my reflection with you:
Who am I really?
For me, you have to ask yourself this question especially at a certain age, when you start to take a step back from your life. I think I am what I would have liked to be with my abilities — the ones I have, but that I haven't necessarily made use of. And in the end, I am also what I have managed to be in reality with those same abilities.
So I conclude that I am what I would have liked to be.
For example: I want to become a smooth talker who defends noble causes, and my ideas represent me. So I am what I think I am. I am my thoughts and my reality.
But then… can I define myself only by what I have actually done?
Personally, I also define myself by what I can be, even if I haven't achieved it yet. And I must also define myself by what I am, because with willpower, you can become what you want.
You know, I told myself that humans are constantly thinking. So they can't really feel "right-wing", "centrist" or "left-wing", because in truth, everyone develops their own vision, their own ideas. In the end, each human being has a kind of inner "political party". We cannot be reduced to a label or a general truth.
After checking, I saw that Sartre had a view very similar to mine.
Sartre says that:
- humans do not have a ready-made "essence";
- we become what we choose to be;
- our identity is our projects, our potential, what we want to become.
I hope you were able to understand me and that you developed your critical thinking while reading this text. Thank you.
