"Yi, is he up there?" Ororo asked quietly into her comms device, seemingly afraid that speaking a little louder would disturb the guy upstairs.
Ororo, now in the standard X-Men uniform, stood before a rather dilapidated monastery. Beside her was Jean Grey, also fully armed. However, aside from the two of them, there was no one else. In other words, Yi wasn't here.
"Yeah, he's up there. Sleeping on the rafters. I bet he used to be in a circus; he can hang himself in mid-air with his tail." Yi's bored voice came from the comms device, while he himself was sitting on a sofa, holding a box of popcorn. Beside him were a pair of girls, about six or seven years old, giggling and surrounding him as they watched cartoons on TV.
It was clear that he had been abandoned. Ororo had forcibly kept Yi behind, using the excuse that the school needed someone to protect the students. And Yi's fate was to watch boring cartoons with a bunch of kids after dinner. It had to be said, this was indeed a torment for him.
"Good, we'll get him." Ororo cut off the conversation and walked directly into the monastery. Yi could only silently pull out a handful of popcorn and shove it into the mouths of the two little kids beside him, who were still drooling.
"Be careful, little ones. If you bite my finger, I'm sure it's you who will feel the pain!"
The two identical-looking little ones exchanged glances at Yi's words, which were more of a joke than a threat, and immediately burst into laughter. In a short time, they had almost figured out Yi's personality. They had no fear at all of this uncle who had been playing with them.
"Well, it seems my words aren't as effective as my actions. Have you two decided how you're going to accept your punishment? The Tickle Monster is here." To show off his authority, and also to amuse the kids, Yi directly used the trick he used to use on Sharice when he was a child: tickling their armpits. This trick was very effective, especially against mischievous children.
The two little ones immediately twisted into a knot on the sofa. Of course, the inherent noisy laughter of children was also inevitable.
"Hey, man, can't you get those two little things to quiet down for a while? I'm about to be driven crazy by the noise!" Logan complained with dissatisfaction from another sofa. Having beast-like acute hearing didn't seem like a good thing at this moment.
"Alright, alright. Uncle Logan has spoken, kids. I'll let you off for now. Who wants to go take a bath first? The slower one will also have to accept the Tickle Monster's punishment later!"
"Oh no!" The twin girls hugged each other and shouted, they were obviously afraid of Yi's methods.
"Then hurry up! If you're slow, the Tickle Monster will come after you too!"
The two girls looked at each other, and instantly turned into two surging streams of water that flew into the air, then quickly rushed out of the living room. Fortunately, this was a mutant school; otherwise, if someone saw two streams of water wearing clothes flying around, they would definitely have nightmares.
"You shouldn't have let them go take a bath. They always like to follow the pipes to other rooms to scare people. And they don't need to take baths with their abilities." The speaker was a small boy with glasses. He was Alex, the youngest child. But unlike his age, he was very smart and also very introverted. When the other children were playing, he always liked to sit there alone and watch an old television.
And his way of watching TV was also peculiar; he never used his hands. He just blinked, and the TV would switch to another channel.
Electronic device manipulation, that was his ability. But probably because of his age, his ability was currently only useful for those old-fashioned machines.
"Sorry, kid. I didn't know these two little ones had this bad habit. But at least one thing is certain, they won't scare you today." Yi tidied up the popcorn all over him; that was the price of taking care of children.
"Hmmph!" Alex's mood visibly improved after hearing this. This was evident from the speed at which he changed channels. It was unbelievably fast; besides someone with a magical ability to communicate with electronic devices like him, no one else could stand that speed.
At the very least, Logan couldn't. Shaking his head, which was a little dizzy from the rapid flashing, he stood up and suggested to Yi.
"Shall we go find something to drink? Sitting here watching the kids is a bit boring."
"That's a good idea." Yi also stood up. He first patted Alex's little head, and after telling him not to play too late, he followed Logan's footsteps. And following the direction indicated by his sensitive sense of smell, Logan led him directly towards the kitchen.
"Do you like children? Then why don't you get married and have your own?"
Logan didn't stay silent the whole way, instead starting a conversation.
"I'm not exactly opposed to marriage, but... who with? That's the big question."
"I can see that!" Logan paused. "Ororo and Jean both like you, even Rogue. But I'm warning you, stay away from Rogue, or don't blame my claws."
"Rogue! Are you crazy?" Yi immediately lowered his voice, speaking quietly. Logan's words completely caught him off guard, and in a way, he was truly frightened. "She's still a child, how could you even think that?"
"Damn it, I don't know why I have these thoughts, it's just a feeling. Anyway, promise me, you absolutely can't make a move on Rogue, understand?" Logan was a little exasperated; he didn't want to have these thoughts either. But in this regard, his innate intuition was terrifyingly sharp.
"I swear, I definitely won't." Yi promised solemnly. "I'm almost ten years older than them. Besides, I'm not at all interested in these young girls. But what about you, Logan! You're so concerned about Rogue, do you have any other ideas?"
He said this purely out of a mischievous impulse, because anyone could see that Logan's feelings for Rogue were purely like those of a father and daughter.
"FUCKYOU! You goddamn bastard, do you know what you're talking about?" Logan almost bared his claws. But in the end, he managed to control his temper. "I'm telling you, I treat Rogue like my own daughter. Don't bring your filthy thoughts into this, it's disgusting."
"Alright, alright. But Logan, since you have that thought, why don't you have a child yourself? I think you're a guy who should be quite popular with women. Finding someone willing to bear your child shouldn't be a problem!"
"A child?" A look of bewilderment suddenly appeared on Logan's face, a look that had been appearing with increasing frequency since he returned from Paris. "If I had a child, they would be about Rogue's age now. Unfortunately, I don't have that luck."
A desolate expression surfaced on his face, the kind only seen on a lonely old man. But for Logan, this expression was not unexpected. He had lived for centuries, and though his body was still in its prime, his soul had long since withered.
"Don't be like that, buddy. That expression really makes me uncomfortable!" Yi looked at Logan's face, and couldn't help but pat his shoulder. He really couldn't stand this kind of look, which probably had something to do with his personality. He was the kind of person who was sunny and cheerful, and such people naturally disliked this gloomy feeling.
"You don't understand, buddy! Victor told me some things. Many years ago, I had a wife, a beautiful wife." Logan shook his head with a wry smile, revealing his past secret to Yi. "Sometimes I can recall a woman, although I wasn't sure before. But when Victor told me, I was sure. She was my wife."
"Alright, you had a wife. That's good news! What then?" Yi, whose curiosity had been piqued, quickly asked. The romantic history of Wolverine Logan, that title alone was attractive enough. "Victor told me, she died. Died in front of me!"
Yi's smile immediately vanished.
"Sorry, Logan. I brought up your sad memories."
"You don't understand, that's not the saddest part." Logan pointed to his head. "Do you know what the earliest thing I can remember is? Waking up in a pile of rubble with a woman's corpse beside me. The funny thing is, I had no idea who she was?"
"Now that I think about it, she should have been my wife, the one Victor told me about!"
A deep, bitter smile spread across his face as he said this. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he smiled. It was a natural reaction, something he couldn't even control. His memories might not hold the woman, but her mark was deeply etched into his soul. He was crying, a sorrow that came from the depths of his being.
Losing someone he loved was no longer the most painful thing for him. Because even when you lose someone you love, it means that your love will always live in your memory. But Logan, he lost the one he loved, and he also forgot the very existence of the one he loved in his memories. It was an indescribable sadness, a soul crying, but never knowing why. Sadness that doesn't even know why it's sad, that was the real pain.
Yi hadn't experienced this feeling, but he could sense how torturous it was for a person's heart. And what was even more torturous was that he was immortal. This blank memory would forever torment him. Like a curse, Logan would forever be trapped in pain.
Not knowing how to comfort him, Yi could only silently pat his shoulder.
"Maybe getting drunk is the best decision right now. I can keep you company, really. As a friend!"
"Thanks, pal." A hint of a grateful smile appeared on Logan's face. "You really don't have to share this with me, sorry. Made you feel uncomfortable."
"No, I should be the one thanking you. You made me realize something," Yi thought for a moment, then summarized. "Whether a person's love can transcend everything. I didn't believe it before, but now I do."
"You really sound like you're into philosophy."
"I think so too!"
The two men, exchanging words, quietly walked into the night.
