Chapter 61 - Broken Family, The General's Past

The final agreement reached was that Zhou Yi would provide two complete sets of Dawn Armor, and the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (SHIELD) would offer approximately 200 pounds of Adamantium, along with what was likely the last remaining five pounds of Vibranium in the world.

Both parties were satisfied with the deal. They had traded things they didn't need for what they urgently required. This was even more important for Zhou Yi.

He needed Adamantium to research the latest Alpha Nano-Metal, and he also needed a considerable amount to craft his own weapons. A single, semi-finished spear wouldn't satisfy his weapon needs. He needed better metals to create more refined weapons.

Previously, the scarcity of Adamantium had put this plan on hold, but now that SHIELD had offered it, he didn't mind using the organization to get some from General Stryker, who had Adamantium.

As for how the General felt about the demands of the powerful figures behind SHIELD, that wasn't his concern.

Zhou Yi personally saw Coulson and Maria Hill to the gate, patted Coulson on the shoulder with a friendly gesture, and said with a proud smile, "I'm very satisfied with this transaction. Compared to the cooperation you mentioned before, I think this is the most important consensus we've reached today!"

"Uh! Although you say so, I still think our previous cooperation talks were more important," Coulson said, straightening his face. "I look forward to coming again to invite you to join us, accompanied by teammates you'll be satisfied with."

"That sort of thing, let's talk about it when you've found these teammates you're talking about." Zhou Yi waved his hand, not thinking Coulson would be able to pull this off so easily. He knew that, besides the two guys working at SHIELD, the rest of the Avengers were either still sleeping or hadn't even been born yet. So, he wasn't at all in a hurry about this.

"Then, it's settled. Until next time." Coulson held out his hand, speaking sincerely.

"Of course!" Returning the gesture, Zhou Yi turned his gaze to Maria Hill. "Ms. Hill, I hope you can drop your prejudice against me next time we meet, although I still don't know where it comes from."

Looking at Zhou Yi's outstretched hand, Maria Hill gave a light touch, just a small gesture, and then walked away without looking back. While this behavior was really too cold, at least in comparison to before, it could barely be considered acceptable in terms of attitude.

This was already good enough for Zhou Yi. He didn't plan to have any overly deep interactions with this sharp-tongued ice-cold female agent. Just easing the relationship to a normal level was simply to avoid making things too tense with the organization behind her.

Coulson seemed a little embarrassed by Maria Hill's cold behavior. The commander's performance today was really beyond his expectations. He could only chime in to smooth things over.

"Perhaps Commander Hill has some personal emotions involved today. You know, she's not usually like this."

"Relax, I don't have a habit of arguing with women." Zhou Yi smiled, patting his shoulder, and glanced at Commander Hill, who was already sitting in the car. "It's not easy for a woman to get to this position; they have to give up a lot. So, there's no need for you to explain anything. I understand."

Coulson pursed his lips, a look of relief on his face.

"It's great that you understand. Well then, we won't bother you two. Goodbye."

"Don't bother!"

Watching Zhou Yi and his vampire assistant slowly disappear from view, Coulson breathed a sigh of relief. He tugged at his tie and, with a puzzled look, turned to Director Hill, who was driving with a cold expression. He asked, bewildered, "Can I ask why?"

"It's best not to ask," Director Hill replied, her face still capable of freezing anyone solid. "This time, it's a personal matter. I'll make a self-criticism. Don't worry, there won't be a next time."

"That's for the best," Coulson muttered. "I was sweating bullets just now. Seriously, I was really worried about being thrown out. You know, that guy can lift a giant Airbus."

"He wouldn't do that. I know him well enough." Director Hill didn't even bother to apologize, just explained in a matter-of-fact tone.

"That's what worries me the most." Coulson swallowed those words as he watched Director Hill, who was focused on driving. He was the best analyst, and Director Hill's unusual attitude towards the Dawn Armor already made him feel uneasy. Neither of them were easy to deal with.

"That lady's attitude is really strange." Serana, holding Zhou Yi's arm, asked curiously, "Did you do something to offend her?"

"I wish that were the case." Zhou Yi shook his head. "But I'm afraid I only just made an impression on that woman."

"Then it can only mean there's a conflict in your horoscopes. What a pity, I don't know the lady's background, otherwise I could have helped you take a look." Serana had a strange hobby: horoscope divination. Heaven knows how she, as a vampire, picked up this strange hobby. Honestly, Zhou Yi was afraid of her bringing up horoscopes with everything.

But he had his own methods for the vampire girl.

He revealed a mischievous smile.

"Do you want to know about the horoscope? Alright then. Let's find a quiet place to study it properly."

"Wait, you rascal. What are you going to do?" The vampire girl called out shyly, then ran away in a bit of a panic. Zhou Yi just smiled. The vampire girl was already his, so there was no need to rush some things.

Flirting was practically a daily activity for Zhou Yi. For General Stryker, who dedicated his life to eradicating the Mutant race, torturing the Mutants he captured and searching for ways to eliminate them was his daily routine.

William Stryker, a little-known Major General in the US Army. He rarely appeared before arms dealers. But that didn't mean he was a powerless, idle general. Quite the opposite, in fact. This general commanded an extremely special organization, and he didn't even need to answer to the President, because his authority came from the Security Council behind the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (SHIELD).

These were the true power brokers in this world, and the power they wielded was terrifying. It far surpassed that of figures like the President.

However, in the eyes of the Security Council, the organization General Stryker commanded was just a small pawn, nowhere near comparable to SHIELD. Even so, he still possessed immense power.

Generally speaking, those with great power tend to pursue personal desires. But General Stryker didn't have such flaws. He wasn't interested in women, nor was he greedy for wealth, and he didn't even seem to have any particular hobbies. He had a very strict military style and treated his subordinates quite well. Such a general was extremely rare among all the high-ranking officers in America.

But there was one thing: he was extremely hateful towards Mutants. He hated them to the point where he was willing to devote his entire life to eliminating them. And the reason for this was a huge tragedy.

This tragedy originated from a Mutant, and this Mutant was none other than his son. Mutant genes are passed down recessively, generation after generation through the paternal line. Some people never awaken these genes in their entire lives, and they remain normal. But when their direct descendants awaken, their offspring break free from this limitation and become Mutants.

William Stryker's son, Jason Stryker, was a Mutant who had awakened his abilities, and his abilities were quite powerful. William's lifelong tragedy also stemmed from his son.

Jason's power was to create illusions, affecting others using only the brainwaves generated by his own mind. He could make them see endless fantasies, the specifics of which depended on what Jason was thinking.

This ability was terrifying, especially for a child. Children's brains aren't fully in control, and their natural inclination for fantasy, usually a good thing, became a disaster for the Stryker family.

William and his wife were repeatedly driven to the brink of collapse by their son's illusions. To save his almost-broken family, he brought his son to Professor Charles' school, seeking help from the world's most powerful telepath.

At this time, although William Stryker worked for a military organization that was extremely against Mutants, it was only because of orders from above. Due to his son's issues, he still held a sliver of sympathy for most Mutants.

Because of his work, he understood Professor Charles' power and held great hope that he could manage Jason's ability. But he was wrong, wrong in his underestimation of his son's power. Jason's abilities were so strong that they even left the Professor somewhat helpless. The illusions Jason wove could even affect the Professor's own powers.

Although he desperately wanted to sway William's stance to his side, the Professor was powerless. He could only have William take his son back home. Jason's abilities were too powerful, and the Professor didn't dare risk letting him stay at the school, as it would pose a threat to the other students.

And this, this was what forged William's tragedy. Unable to bear Jason's increasingly powerful and terrifying illusions, Mrs. Stryker, in a state of mental breakdown, used an electric drill to pierce her own temple.

The perfect family shattered instantly. William not only lost his wife; in a sense, he also buried his son. When this enormous tragedy fell upon him, William made a decision that would define his life.

He wanted to completely eradicate the evil race of Mutants from the world, no matter the cost.
