Chapter 57 - Morality, Let It Go With the Wind

Kainan clutched a suitcase with a look of panic, followed by Blade's assistant, Josh.

Both of them wore expressions as if they were being chased by rabid dogs, and they didn't relax even after getting into the car. Instead, they slammed on the accelerator, forcing a business van to drive with the momentum of a sports car.

They couldn't be blamed. Who would have thought that the Vampire Empire, which was at its zenith, and had even held Blade, the great enemy of vampires, in its grasp just moments before, would vanish in less than a night?

They, who had been dependent on the Vampire Empire, instantly became stray dogs, and they were also burdened with the crime of being human traitors. Such a thing was even hard for Josh to bear, even though he was used to being an undercover agent.

Josh was an undercover agent, that much was true. He was a nail that the Vampire Empire had directly planted beside Blade. Being pursued to the death by vampires while pretending to be human, this kind of trick even fooled someone as experienced as Blade.

It was also because he was an undercover agent that the vampires were able to use Whistler as a trump card to threaten Blade when they were trying to capture him. Without the guidance of the undercover agent, it would have been difficult for the vampires to catch Whistler, who fundamentally didn't trust them. This was the final move, and completing this step meant that all of the Grand Marquis's plans were coming to a close.

This was originally a good move. However, when the Grand Marquis and all of his plans vanished, this move instead pushed Josh to the brink. Not only did he not get everything he wanted, but he also completely exposed his identity. He didn't believe that Blade, with his intelligence, wouldn't see through his true identity.

Therefore, when he saw Kainan, the head of the human traitors, secretly trying to escape, he followed him without hesitation. He threatened Kainan, exposing his whereabouts.

Urging Josh to speed up, Kainan watched the factory recede into the distance. He touched the briefcase in his arms and let out a long sigh. He was a true top-tier talent, and even without his Vampire master, his comfortable life wouldn't be affected. However, he hadn't risked his dignity, or even sacrificed his humanity, to serve the Grand Marquis for a comfortable life – he didn't lack for that at all. He wanted immortality.

Like a Vampire, able to maintain youth and vitality for hundreds of years. Although the Vampires' fear of the sun and silver was a fatal weakness, it wasn't insurmountable for him; he was an expert in the field of genetics.

The briefcase contained all the data he had accumulated over the years from his experiments for the Grand Marquis. With this, he could quickly make a comeback and realize his dream in the hands of another Vampire Family. As the Grand Marquis's chief researcher, he also had some connections with the Vampires far away in Europe. Thinking about this, he glanced coldly at the guy beside him.

He didn't like being threatened, especially by a guy he looked down on.

Josh was oblivious to Kainan's gaze. He was a bottom-dweller; he might be a little bit cunning and shameless, but when it came to schemes and conspiracies, he was an utter idiot.

Chewing on the cigarette that never left his pocket, Josh trembled as he exhaled smoke, obediently increasing his speed. Of course, he never knew how to keep his mouth shut.

"Hey, buddy, where are we going? There's nowhere in New York that Blade can't find, not to mention a Dawn Knight."

"Shut your mouth and just drive," Kainan said, clearly not wanting to talk to him. He closed his eyes and began to silently plan. Although he had enough leverage, he still needed to strategize to maximize his benefits.

Josh knew he didn't have any say in the matter. He craved the decadent, lavish lifestyle, and it all depended on the guy beside him. So, he could only mutter quietly.

"Fine by me, but, buddy, you gotta tell me where we're going."

"The airport!" Kainan had barely spoken when a black glove landed on Josh's shoulder. "Mate, I think you should drive towards my place instead."

Through the rearview mirror, they could clearly see Blade in the back seat, and his incredibly white teeth. They'd been in such a rush, they hadn't even noticed the guy lying on the floor in the back seat when they got in.

Kainan broke out in a cold sweat when he saw Blade. He wanted to distance himself. In fact, he and Blade had no grievances. Josh, on the other hand, was far more likely to attract Blade's hatred. A traitor was, without a doubt, the most detested person to anyone.

However, before he could speak, a force he couldn't resist came from outside the car window. Josh only saw a black shadow flash, and the person beside him was gone. All that remained was a car door, twisted and misshapen.

Swallowing hard out of instinct, he was about to ask Blade what had happened. Blade cut him off.

"Don't worry about that guy, he just wants to settle a score. What you need to worry about is how I'm going to settle a score with you."

Kainan yelled as a powerful force yanked him upwards, the intense feeling of weightlessness making him panic. He watched the ground grow further away, closing his eyes and struggling wildly. He was a guy with a slight fear of heights, and this sudden turn of events was simply too much for his heart to bear. However, even at this moment, he still held the box tightly, his steady hands not trembling even a little.

The feeling of weightlessness quickly disappeared, but Kainan still didn't feel his feet on solid ground. He cautiously opened his eyes and saw a figure in black armor staring directly at him.

The Dawn Knight! Recognizing the person before him, he breathed a sigh of relief. Unlike Blade, the Dawn Knight had always appeared before the public as a just hero. Although he had always been cracking down on crime, he had never killed anyone, not a single person. Dealing with a guy bound by rules, with a sense of morality and justice, Kainan felt he could handle it.

Seeing Kainan's expression relax a bit, Zhou Yi's voice dripped coldness.

"It seems you are not afraid of me."

"Why would I be afraid of you?" The slippery guy began to speak smoothly. "You are the messenger of justice, the protector of the people, the defender of the law. And I am just a working guy. Maybe my boss is a bit crazy, but that has nothing to do with me. From a legal point of view, I haven't even committed a crime, so why should I be afraid of you?"

Zhou Yi tilted his head, the black helmet reflecting cold light in the sunlight.

"You think I dare not kill you?"

"No, no, no!" Kainan shook his head quickly. "I would never doubt your courage. However, I am still human, a law-abiding human, I haven't even evaded taxes. Someone like me, I can't imagine you have any reason to harm me."

"You're very fond of sweet talk," Zhou Yi said after a moment of silence. "I don't care about your life or death; your life is in your own hands. I just want to ask some questions. Answer me honestly, and I don't mind letting you leave."

"Being eloquent is a lawyer's professional ethic," Kainan breathed a sigh of relief, feeling like his life was secure. "Ask away. In the name of the law, I will tell you the truth."

How much value the law held in the eyes of such a person was not a question Zhou Yi wanted to explore. He just stared at Kainan and asked coldly,

"How many experimental subjects does the Grand Marquis still have?"

"As you can see, all the unsuccessful subjects have been destroyed. There's only Chadnorma, a half-finished product, and Yasa, the one who was just a little bit away from success."

The Grand Marquis had already turned to dust. Kainan naturally wouldn't keep any secrets for this former employer who was no longer in the world, especially when the secret concerned his own safety.

"I've examined your experimental records; all the experiments had made no progress for several years. It wasn't until a few years ago that your experiments made rapid progress. Don't tell me you suddenly had a burst of inspiration, I've checked your data. You're the type of person who isn't very innovative. Without external intervention, you wouldn't have been able to achieve such results with your aptitude."

Kainan's face flushed slightly; being questioned about his most prized skill ignited a spark of anger within him. However, he quickly suppressed it. Between life and dignity, he decisively chose life. And, to a certain extent, Zhou Yi's conclusion wasn't entirely wrong.

His expression revealed a few traces of dejection. As Zhou Yi had said, his breakthroughs were indeed built upon a certain degree of external force.

"It's an ancient virus, one that has never been discovered before. The Grand Marquis obtained this virus from his allies in Europe and used it in this experimental project. This virus possesses incredible power, and although there's some incompatibility with vampire genes, it wasn't a major issue. Our research quickly made breakthroughs."

Interrupting Kainan's narration, Zhou Yi had found what he was looking for.

"The Grand Marquis's allies provided this virus. Who are his allies?"

Kainan's eyes darted around slyly.

"I only know they are a Vampire Family in the UK; I know nothing else."

Physical tests and brainwave fluctuations proved he wasn't lying. Although he hadn't revealed the complete truth, it was enough for Zhou Yi.

Zhou Yi silently turned and flew away. He left Kainan suspended in mid-air. The moment Zhou Yi left, Kainan lost the support of telekinesis, and his body began to freefall due to Earth's gravity.

He was at an altitude of 13,000 feet, with an open highway below. Kainan had no chance of survival.

He cursed, pleaded, and threatened, but it was all meaningless to Zhou Yi. He only had a few dozen seconds left to live, so whatever he did was pointless.

With the sound of a heavy object hitting the ground, Kainan's body burst open like a broken tomato, splattering blood-red fluid all over the highway. Even in death, he clutched the suitcase tightly. Such a person was a miserable existence, even in life.

Waving his hand, Zhou Yi unleashed a wave of flames and flew towards home. He and Blade had finished what they needed to do. He had never been so tired and desperately needed a place to rest.

Many days later, Blade returned from a routine vampire hunt. Josh's death was still somewhat inconvenient for him. After all, Whistler was getting old and inevitably couldn't keep up. So, his equipment still wasn't completely sorted out, especially in terms of transportation. This greatly affected his routine work.

Whistler also knew the importance of this, but it wasn't easy to create a vehicle that Blade could really use. So, he was usually working on it bit by bit.

But today, Blade saw Whistler, uncharacteristically, sitting there sunbathing with a cigarette in his mouth.

Seeing Blade's returning figure, he winked and said, "A friend sent you a gift! I think you'll be happy to see it."

Blade frowned in surprise and asked, "A friend? Who are you talking about?"

"Don't worry, I've checked it out. No tricks. And I think, that guy is not bad," Whistler winked and pointed to an empty space not far away.

Faced with Whistler's rare joking tone, Blade seemed a little puzzled. He walked in the direction Whistler indicated. What he saw was a huge container.

Whistler was a guy who never lied to him. So without the slightest hesitation, Blade opened the container door.

Six military Humvees were parked inside, their strong muscular lines particularly eye-catching in the sunlight. Blade shrugged and casually closed the door.

Turning his head, he looked at a figure slowly rising in the sky. A strange smile played on his face.

"Well done, mate!"
