Chapter 30 - The Vampiric Variant: The Cease-Fire Accord

Zhou Yi's sudden outburst naturally threw the entire scene into chaos. Many people lost their nerve. The vampire butler still hanging on the wall looked both furious and terrified. He struggled to climb down, but under such an attack his internal organs had suffered extremely severe trauma. It wasn't fatal for a vampire, but without a period of recuperation, moving at all was basically impossible.

The old man and the auto mechanic both looked as though they were watching a good show, with absolutely no intention of interfering. Blade stood expressionlessly at the other passageway, clearly intending to block any vampires who tried to summon reinforcements from elsewhere. Anyone could see that Blade and his two companions had no intention of helping the vampires—if anything, they were quite pleased to watch someone give these bloodsuckers a beating.

Zhou Yi continued forward, but someone stepped in front of him—someone who should have feared him like a tiger: Nissa Makinos.

There wasn't the slightest hint of fear on her face now. Instead, she stood protectively in front of her father, body lowered, fangs bared and claws extended—just like a bristling hedgehog. The warning in her posture was unmistakable.

When her father was threatened, this woman erupted with astonishing potential, overcoming her fear and facing the nightmare deep within her heart. Zhou Yi had not expected this, so he slowed to a stop.

Standing before this fiercely guarded woman, Zhou Yi tilted his head. He didn't care what she wanted. He could pause for a moment—because she'd shown impressive bravery. But he would not stop because a woman blocked his way, not even if they had just been chatting amicably moments ago.

If that so-called Vampire Overlord didn't make a move soon, Zhou Yi didn't mind killing half the vampires here first, then asking the remaining ones what exactly their supposed "threat" was supposed to look like. In this place, they did have one vampire who'd lived long enough and studied human nature deeply enough to be called a master of manipulation.

That vampire overlord raised a hand and pressed it on his daughter's shoulder, stepping out from behind her.

"Please calm your rage, Daywalker," the Vampire Overlord said with a deep bow, arms spread open in a posture of humility.

"I am deeply sorry for my improper words. I hope you can forgive the ramblings of an old man. The situation before us may be insignificant to someone as powerful as you, but for ordinary humans and vampires alike, it is extremely grave. So I beg your pardon for my thoughtless offense."

Such a lowly posture would be rare even from a decrepit old human, let alone a vampire.Zhou Yi didn't believe for a moment that the old man was doing this because the crisis truly concerned him. He was far more convinced that the Vampire Overlord had schemes far beyond the ordinary.

But since the man wanted to put on a performance, Zhou Yi didn't mind playing along—he wanted to see what kind of tricks the old fox was hiding.

He intentionally took a step forward, provoking the fragile nerves of the vampire father and daughter, then flicked his cloak and returned to his original spot. Blade, who had been blocking the door, flashed a wide grin full of bright white teeth and also strolled casually back to his place.

At that moment, the vampires finally understood: these two legendary vampire hunters didn't take their so-called Vampire Overlord seriously at all. Everything the vampires had been boasting about was nothing more than self-indulgent delusion.

The Overlord placed one hand over his chest while the other slipped quietly behind his back. His five fingers clenched so hard that the knuckles twisted. Clearly, he was enraged to the extreme—but since he was venting his fury through such tiny gestures, it meant he had chosen not to erupt yet.

Nissa felt the urge to scold this disrespectful behavior, but her father's grip on her shoulder tightened with such force that it hurt. The pain stopped her; she understood he would not allow her to act.

The Overlord suppressed his daughter's impulse, then clapped twice toward an archway behind him. A well-dressed, refined-looking blond man stepped out.

"Greetings, everyone."

He appeared calm, but his eyes kept flicking toward Zhou Yi. That tiny tic betrayed his nervousness.Still, the man clearly had experience—his emotions didn't disrupt his composure.

"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Kelo Conan."

He extended his right hand to Blade.Blade took the hand—not for a polite handshake, but to twist it over, glaring at a tattoo-like mark on the back of Kelo's hand.

"You're human?" Blade asked coldly.

Kelo tried to pull back, but Blade's grip was too strong. Giving up the effort, he forced a wry smile."Almost. I'm a lawyer. Legal consultant for the European Health Foundation."

His tone was humorous, but Blade's expression only darkened.People like this no longer saw themselves as human—they worshipped vampires, hoping their fanged masters would grant them so-called immortality. These were the people Blade loathed most. It was precisely because of them that his mission to kill vampires faced endless obstacles.

Blade released him. Kelo immediately pulled his hand back and massaged it. He was used to luxury; being squeezed by Blade was no pleasant experience. When he approached Zhou Yi, Zhou Yi crossed his arms and said:

"When the day comes that you turn into a vampire, be sure to let me know. I'll give you an unforgettable experience."

Those words made it clear—Zhou Yi already intended to kill him someday. The only reason he hadn't done so now was because Kelo was still human. But a collaborator like him would become something else sooner or later. And when that happened, it would mark his death.

Kelo fully understood. He forced an awkward smile but had no words to respond—no amount of eloquence could give him security before someone like Zhou Yi.

The one who saved him from further humiliation was Overlord Aelida himself. He had just ordered his loyal butler rescued, and seeing someone threaten his human subordinate, he rushed to intervene. Kelo was far too important to him; otherwise he would never have allowed a human to hold such a key position.

The Overlord walked silently to a nearby specimen display. Admiring it with feigned interest, he began speaking.

"As you know, the blood-drinking nature of vampires is like an infectious virus transmitted through the predator's saliva."

It was a clever diversion—he avoided mentioning the earlier tension and shifted the topic to something far more important. It worked. Both Zhou Yi and Blade ignored Kelo and focused on the Overlord's explanation.

"This virus spreads through the human bloodstream within seventy-two hours, generating parasitic tissue. In other words, within three days, a new vampire can be created."

The Overlord looked almost intoxicated. Compared to the vampires' pitiful natural reproduction rate, this viral method was the true foundation of their expansion—indeed, the cornerstone of the empire he dreamed of.

Blade, however, gritted his teeth. "Like cancer cells!"

His hatred of vampires was not without reason.

He carried half vampire blood—not because of some melodramatic romance, but because a vampire had attacked his mother shortly before she gave birth. The virus that entered her body infected Blade while still in the womb. That moment sealed his fate.

He was not human—for he carried a vampire's power and bloodlust.Nor was he a vampire—for he was immune to sunlight and silver.Vampires called him the Daywalker, a legend. But to him, it was the source of his tragic life.

Without that attack, he might have lived as an ordinary human, simple and happy. Instead, he hunted vampires—offering their blood as tribute to his lost fate and everything he'd been denied.

The Overlord clenched his hand at Blade's words, baring a hint of fangs, but quickly hid the gesture and corrected calmly:

"More precisely, purposeful cancer cells."

Cancer cells multiplied endlessly, devouring everything. By calling them "purposeful," he implied their behavior was not mindless replication.

Seeing that the Overlord did not continue, Kelo immediately stepped forward to take over the explanation.

"Unfortunately, viruses also evolve."His expression turned solemn, revealing a surprisingly professional air.

"We have identified a new evolved variant. We call it the R-type."He pulled a portable holographic projector from his pocket.

"Like all efficient pathogens, it quickly locates hosts and spreads through infection!"

A holographic recording appeared—chronicling Chardenoma's attack on the underground blood vault. The group watched in silence as Chardenoma assaulted others, until the footage displayed his bizarre, distorted mouth.

Kelo pointed at the final frame. "That's him—Chardenoma."

The Overlord glanced at Blade, saying pointedly:

"Born a vampire—yet like you, a rare mutant. Unlike the rest of us. However…"His expression twisted with fear and disgust, as though beholding a masterpiece gone horribly wrong.

"It feeds not only on humans… but on vampires as well. That is what I mean… by the root of all chaos!"
