Chapter 1 - Awakening

The grass rustled in the wind, a distinct sound that filled your ears and drowned out all the thoughts in your head, leaving you at peace. Peace would be the only thing he could think about, in fact, all other thoughts slipped away from him, as if something was supposed to be there, but it had shown up late to the party. It was confusing to say the least, but for some reason, it didn't bother him.

He sat up, his senses coming to life as he took in the scenery. Tall trees, fields of grass, birds flying overhead, but the real treasure was the dirt path conveniently placed next to his sleeping body, a path that stretched out into the field beyond. He couldn't stop the wide smile that cracked onto his face, the sheer and utter joy he felt at seeing it. This path was home, so familiar to him that when he turned around to see where the other end of the path went… his smile faded. There was nothing there, no monument or memory, just a road that slowly transitioned into wilderness, as if the path too, had slipped away along with his thoughts.

He didn't understand what it meant, the sense of loss as he managed to climb to his feet, but something about this path made sense, if not to him than to some part of him, and that alone was reason enough to continue foward, letting his feet take him into the great beyond.

He hadn't made it far before his feet ached, his stomach growled, slowly succumbing to the chill of an approaching sunset. He hadn't realized how thin his clothes were when he awoke, but they were barely keeping the breeze off his back, made of leather and animal hides, his shoes doing a horrible job at stopping the rocks in the dirt from pricking at his soles. Peasent was the only word in his head, seared into his skull with rage and bitterness, which made no sense considering he had no idea what a peasent even was. Where were these feelings coming from? Why did it feel like he was empty, his thirst flaring to life at even the tiniest drop of memory? Memories of a peasant, with torn and battered clothes, with cold feet and an empty stomach.

Suddenly his shivering was interrupted as a new sound filled his ears, the sound of something large and heavy approaching from the path, rattling his bones. He didn't know why, but he knew this could only be another person, his feet carrying him faster than before as he ran to the new mystery, hoping he would like what he found.
