Chapter 28 - A day off

After returning to Roa, I told Philip about everything that had happened and took him to meet Rudeus. The conversation went quite smoothly, generally just greetings and pleasantries. Although Philip didn't say it outright, I could guess he was quite satisfied with the outcome of the trip. However, he didn't seem to anticipate that Rudeus and I would bring Sylphiette along.

But with the promise that having a female friend to play with would help Eris act more like a lady, Philip didn't object. Or rather, Philip didn't seem to object to having another child in his mansion from the start, so I think it wasn't a problem.

"As long as you ensure Eris still focuses on her studies, it's fine." - Philip said.

At first, Rudeus and I thought it was just a casual warning, but it seemed Philip had truly foreseen the future. Because since returning to Roa, except for sword practice with Ghislaine, Eris went back to her old ways, refusing to study and demanding to play all day.

Ah no, at least she still proactively wanted to be taught magic. But that could still be considered a 'disaster'.

However, all the classes were always fully attended by a student I didn't expect to appear: Ghislaine. It seems she requested Rudeus to teach her math and writing. In return, she would also teach swordsmanship to Rudeus and Sylphiette.

And only I was surprised because this agreement took place between Paul and Ghislaine.

"Oh, I thought you knew?" Rudeus said that while I knew absolutely nothing.

Meanwhile, Rudeus was also told about it before leaving for Roa, and he didn't even bother to tell me. But thinking back, this isn't a problem; on the contrary, Rudeus was the one who saw this as an opportunity.

During sword practice, Rudeus deliberately asked Ghislaine loudly so Eris could hear.

"By the way, Ms. Ghislaine, why do you want to learn to read and do math?"

So Ghislaine started telling about her life since birth, becoming a mischievous child in the village, meeting her master, friends, and when she became an adventurer...

In general, it was an expanded and more specific version of Ghislaine's life, and this time it wasn't used to talk about the combat aspect but about her difficulties in life. Roughly about how not knowing how to read, write, or do math had caused Ghislaine difficulties. She got lost because she couldn't read maps or signs, was cheated when shopping or preparing enough food; the peak was shortly after the Fangs of the Black Wolf group disbanded, Ghislaine almost starved to death.

Interestingly, that story actually made Eris study reading, writing, and math. Whenever our young lady felt bored, Ghislaine's stories were brought up again.

Besides, Rudeus also came up with many other cool things to apply to the lessons. For example, word chain games, crossword puzzles for reading. As for math, Rudeus didn't bother using games but just used Ghislaine's stories as bait.

In addition, Sylphiette also contributed significantly to helping Eris study better. If Rudeus is a teacher, Ghislaine is the diligent student, Eris is the rebellious student, then Sylphiette is the student who will always get high marks and is the most lovable in class. Sometimes that elf girl would point out and explain things that even Rudeus and I couldn't think of for Eris, helping the young lady understand the lesson immediately. And it seems thanks to being close to both Ghislaine and Sylphiette, who were dedicated and diligent, even Eris was influenced and gradually complained less.

At times like this, I feel the decision to bring Sylphiette along was truly correct.

Speaking of Sylphiette, this girl is truly not ordinary. First is the speed of adaptation. Usually, a child entering a new and completely different environment would easily be overwhelmed and confused. Initially, Sylphiette was indeed a bit like that but quickly got used to this new environment. Although a bit shy, she could already talk to a few beast folk servants in the mansion, who clearly recognized the cuteness of an elf girl and had no problem with her green hair.

It seems humans are the race that discriminates most strongly, huh?

And besides what was said above, this green-haired girl is really good at learning everything. When I say 'everything', I mean 'everything'.

Sylphiette only took about two months to master noble etiquette. Just a few weeks to dance proficiently and even solve difficult math problems at a middle school level.

Not only that, Sylphiette's magic learning is also strangely good. Even though I, Eris, and Ghislaine were also taught magic by Rudeus like her, Sylphiette was always the one who learned everything earliest.

Rudeus initially thought Sylphiette had the speed of a normal person because she was his first student. But clearly, Sylphiette must be at the 'genius' level when it comes to magic. Not equal to Rudeus, of course, but this speed can still be considered a once-in-a-century genius type. If I had to compare, it's like she's the 'Isolde' of magic.

This time I have no intention of surpassing anyone at all costs but just focus on my goals, so life is much less stressful.

Among those goals is grasping magic theory more clearly from Rudeus.

"The reason you're weak in Wind and Earth magic is because of something called opposition schools."

"Opposition schools?" I asked back. "Like playing an MMO?"

"Well yes but not exactly, they don't deal more damage to you like in games, but you will have more difficulty mastering them."

Rudeus said that past experiences or culture can greatly affect these opposition schools. For example, Sylphiette burned her hand at age 3, so she has Fire as her opposition school. While Eris has Earth as an opposition school for reasons no one knows. While Ghislaine seems to have difficulties with Earth, Wind, and Water. Fire magic is the only system Ghislaine can learn normally.

Conversely to opposition schools, there are affinity schools - types of magic suitable for the user. For example, Sylphiette is very suitable for Water and Wind magic, while Eris learns Fire magic very smoothly.

As for me, it seems I fit with Water and Fire. That also includes healing magic. Thinking back, I initially learned healing magic quite difficultly, but somehow later developed it most favorably. Even besides healing magic, I can also use detoxification magic and even Divine Strike (like the Exorcist light) proficiently, even chantless.

Maybe because of lots of practice. After all, I spent a lot of time honing my self-healing ability in combat quite a bit. Or maybe because I'm a Millis believer and sometimes I even hear explanations about things related to divine spirituality and such. I heard most of the strongest healing mages are believers or members of the church, so it's possible.

However, I don't quite understand why Wind and Earth are my opposition schools. Is it because I was ostracized for many years so I fear the cold of the wind? And being in a cramped room alone makes me hate walls and earth?

But I'm a Geochemistry major after all! I should be the best in Earth magic! Why the opposite!? Aaaaaaa!

Oh well, fuck it, let's just accept the reality then. Even if it's a bit harder, I still try to learn them because who knows if they'll be useful later.

Meanwhile, the concept of opposition schools doesn't seem to affect Rudeus much. He explained to himself that it's probably because he lived in a fairly peaceful and happy family, so he's like that.

Besides Rudeus having no opposition school, he is truly very 'creative' and 'versatile' in magic. He can do anything, easily and effectively to a terrifying degree. Anything I can imagine, he can do it all.

Indeed, as long as it can be imagined, Rudeus can do it. Which is kinda bull shit and overpowered as heck.

I thought it's because of his 'reincarnator' buff or something but it's actually explainable. The explanation for that lies in two things.

First is the enormous amount of mana Rudeus has.

He has such a large amount of mana that I don't know how many times higher it is compared to me. Once I tried asking him to use as much as possible with dozens of complex magic spells, and he still couldn't run out. While I use one Advanced spell and I'm gasping for air. Rudeus explained that it was because he practiced mana training from a very young age, specifically from two years old. Meaning just one year before me, yet the gap could be this large.

"I think you are super strong in magic, Rudeus." I said it with deep respect.

"I'm still nowhere near Master Roxy's level though."

How strong is his master? Maybe somewhere Emperor rank or something? She must be a fricking walking disaster.

But actually, I think innate talent is also something that determines a large part of the mana amount. For example, Sylphiette has only used magic for about two years, yet she already has a mana amount several dozen times higher than mine.

While my mana is only about Eris's level - who has only learned for two months. And I even have less than Ghislaine.

Life is truly unfair.

Back to the second reason for Rudeus easily using magic to do so many things lies in chantless magic.

Until now I just learned the secret of chantless magic lies in recreating the feeling of using magic specifically in the head to create them. I also have that theory in my head for a while but it's kinda abstract to put it. I mean, there are no 'feeling' terms in science after all, we use facts and statistics. But maybe that's why I can't accept the fact that I can just 'feel' a fireball out of my hand huh?

Rudeus also told me it's not that strange because books record some people are also 'unconscious' like me without knowing how they did it. Most of them think that you only can cast chantless magic though your understanding deeply about that magic or something like that.

Which is also true, we figured out that to do chantless, you must understand the theory behind it to make it into work. Like how magic creates a waterball isn't by just 'creating it' but actually merging moisture in the air to create the ball.

But doesn't that mean Rudeus found a world-shaking secret of magic? If this is revealed, it could create a magic revolution.

We tried to impart this technique to Eris and Ghislaine. In the end, both of them didn't seem able to recreate it. And the mana training method also didn't seem effective with Ghislaine.

So Rudeus and I immediately wrote down two new notes for chantless magic including 'probably only learned when young', 'used easily with compatible magic' for the 'chantless magic' section. As for the 'mana capacity training' part, a small note 'adults cannot train' was added.

So why are the two factors of large mana and chantless magic so powerful when combined?

That's because as Rudeus also said, recreating the feeling of magic to create that magic sometimes can also 'invent' some feeling to create a new magic. And with a huge amount of mana, Rudeus can customize that new magic at will - an action that consumes a lot of mana.

I tried to follow to try fine-tuning the size of the water ball, and that consumed mana no less than using intermediate or even advanced magic. Thanks to that, I found a new way to consume more mana to train my maximum capacity.

Hmm...

Thinking back, I think I have a few ideas to apply magic to my fighting style if I can learn Rudeus's 'magic improvement' ability.

About three months after Rudeus and Sylphiette arrived, I could rest assured that everything was on track and stopped going to study with my group of friends to focus on work. So except for sword practice time and occasionally practicing dancing with Eris, I had quite a bit of free time to return to my long-buried passion: Making magic tools.

Thanks to being taught the basics of magic more systematically by Rudeus, and being a bit financially comfortable, I was able to buy a few expensive books and better materials.

And when I completed the first item, I wasn't stupid enough not to show it off to my peers.

"Oh oh, is this a real magic tool?"

Eris marveled looking at the metal bracelet I was holding. It was shaped like the wristbands Wonder Woman usually wears. Although metal, I intentionally used a special alloy with high ductility so almost anyone can wear it unless they have excessively large wrists.

"What can this thing do?" Rudeus asked while picking up the bracelet and examining the magic circles I carved on the underside. Based on his expression, I think Rudeus doesn't understand these things, so I explained.

"It can glow, like this." I put the bracelet on my arm and said the command. "Light."

Suddenly the bracelet glowed, making the library in the afternoon as bright as midday. While everyone was marveling, I also explained further.

"When wearing this to explore a labyrinth, it can replace a torch and you don't have to lose a hand to hold it." I said while looking at the only S-rank adventurer in the room. "Ghislaine once said holding a torch would be very inconvenient, right?"

"Mm." Ghislaine nodded. "It is indeed very inconvenient to hold a torch."

"Now you don't need to worry anymore." I gave a thumbs up. "Besides, it also has exorcism capabilities so you don't have to be suddenly attacked by vengeful spirits."

I also spent a little more time explaining other features this 'Exorcism Bracelet' can do, including creating flashbangs. It was even upgraded much more than my old Exorcism Lantern in terms of energy efficiency because I used better mana conductive materials. Now even normal people without too much mana can use this easily.

In general, it truly has practical value.

But its only problem lies in...

"Wait Atur, how much did you say this bracelet cost?" Rudeus was the most serious, placing both hands on my shoulders, slowly asking word by word.

I paused for a few seconds then answered honestly. "Forty-seven gold coins. Not counting the loose silver."

Rudeus froze completely. While the others seemed to be trying to calculate how much forty-seven gold coins I just said was worth.

"Every month I get paid five gold coins, so dividing it..." Ghislaine muttered calculating.

"Is that amount of money a lot?" Eris turned to Sylphiette.

"I'm not sure either... I've never used money." The green-haired elf girl also muttered a bit then hummed before turning to Rudeus waiting for an explanation.

"That amount of money is enough for both of us to go to Ranoa to study without worrying about money." Rudeus concluded. "Even with some left over."

"Eh? Really?"

Rudeus and I calculated that the admission fee at Ranoa is 3 gold coins, living expenses, shopping for various items for each person a year is also about 2 gold coins. So after 7 years, the fixed cost is about 34 gold coins. So my number had a surplus of more than ten coins.

In general, it's expensive as hell.

Well, I used the best materials. And because I added the pile of damaged and excess materials purchased, in reality, this lantern only cost somewhere only around 30 gold coins. Ah no, 30 gold coins is still very high, sorry.

Initially, I intended to give money straight to Rudeus and Sylphiette to go to Ranoa if the matter in Buena village couldn't be resolved. Rudeus naturally didn't want to accept but wanted to earn money himself, so I used that money to splurge on books and research.

Although lately, the alcohol business isn't booming anymore, I should have saved more, right? Debts are not paid off yet...

Ah whatever, I'll find some way to make money later, taking care of myself a bit now isn't bad.

"But this is the first time I've seen a magic tool." Rudeus admitted. "You made it yourself, you're really skillful; I heard Master Roxy say only the most skilled artisans in Ranoa can make them."

"Well, I have to have some cool trade not to lose to a genius like you, hehe. I'm very good at magic circle theory, you know."

It's been a long time since I had a chance to show off, must make the most of it.

"Magic circles? Master Roxy isn't well-versed in them so I indeed haven't learned much. Can you teach me?" Rudeus suggested.

"Ok, consider it payment for teaching me magic." I immediately gave a thumbs up. "Sylphiette can join too."

"Hey, what about me!?" Eris slammed the table.

"You're not capable of learning this."

I got punched, a super fast punch without killing intent so I couldn't dodge. It seems Eris is getting better and better at countering me.

But in the end, Eris didn't join, the reason being the young lady's study schedule was full. And I was forced to use my tongue to say we would give her a magic tool after we all made one, then she agreed.

After dealing with Eris, I suddenly realized something was wrong with Rudeus's words.

"Are there no magic tools at Paul's house?" I asked Rudeus again. "After all, Uncle Paul and Zenith are S-rank adventurers, don't they use them?"

"My house has a few magic items. But no magic tools."

"I see." I nodded.

Magic tools and magic items are two different things. Magic tools can be created and reproduced as long as there is a design and a skilled enough craftsman. But magic items cannot; they are items found in labyrinths. Besides, magic tools require the user to infuse mana to use, while magic items can use their own mana to do something.

It seems magic items have such special properties because they absorbed something while in the labyrinth. Many ordinary items or magic tools became magic items when left behind by unfortunate adventurers who lost their lives. And from those items, there will be some random features.

So sometimes a magic item can be something very terribly strong, or something very silly. Like a sword-shaped magic item that can blow bubbles sold at the adventurer's guild for a very cheap price. I can completely understand why no one bothered to buy it.

Also sometimes there is something like a large shield that can be seen through from the user's side. With that thing, you can hide behind your shield and see the enemy completely while the opponent can't see anything, extremely useful.

Speaking of useful, maybe my exorcism bracelet could sell well, right?

Maybe next weekend break I'll try taking it out to sell.

In this world, there is essentially no concept of a weekend. Actually, all this time I've just assumed that whenever there's a sermon at the church, I call it a weekend, but the people don't have that concept. The only person who used that term with me was Isolde when I introduced it to her. However, Isolde didn't use that day to rest but just went back to training as usual.

So for a long time, I haven't had a real day off except for that three-day trip to Buena a few months ago.

But after spending time meeting with other tutors including Rudeus, Ghislaine, and Ms. Edna, we arranged a day off for Eris not to study every seven days. Of course, that's not only precious time for us kids to entertain ourselves but also for me and Rudeus to have a day off work and still get paid, hehe.

Actually, Philip's request is quite simple, as long as Eris attends school at least one day a month, we won't be fired. Meaning I can completely give Eris 29 days off and receive full salary with a single school day, but that would be too much and shameless, so never mind.

Besides, both I and the other tutors really want Eris to become more complete. That's right, we are all excellent, responsible educators.

"Ghislaine still follows us even on a day off?"

I asked while walking alongside the Sword King, who also walked close enough to observe the group of Eris, Rudeus, and Sylphiette in front.

"My duty is to protect the young lady's safety."

Ah right, Ghislaine is actually a bodyguard, and the swordsmanship tutor job is just a bonus task. No wonder she has a salary of five gold coins. Even I think hiring a Sword King to protect myself at that price is cheap.

"But inside Roa city like this, what could happen? I've been here for a while and haven't seen anything dangerous."

I've also walked around this city many times and there really are very few robberies or vices. Occasionally there are brawls near the taverns around the adventurer area, but for the most part, this is still a fairly safe city.

"Sometimes not seeing or hearing doesn't mean nothing happens."

"Have you encountered something here?"

"Occasionally a few guys settle scores with each other and secretly bury bodies at the edge of the forest."

"Eek?" I shuddered. "Does something like that actually happen here?"

"It happens more often than you think."

Then I have to be more careful. After all, I was just an ordinary kid so it was fine, the previous times I went with Philip so there was nothing to worry about. But now going with a young lady, there is a possibility of being noticed by bad guys.

Ghislaine's words were very reasonable back in the Royal Capital. Who knows, maybe one unlucky day some of Darius's henchmen decide to come here to kidnap Eris or slit my throat for revenge. After all, according to what I found out, the Prime Minister has a quite powerful private army spread throughout the kingdom.

I'm really curious how such a pervert can stand in a position of power and have such powerful potential. After finding out, it seems he is a truly talented person and built his current position himself, not supported by his family. And Darius also has many merits in stabilizing the national situation and such.

If it weren't for me knowing his sick hobbies and crimes, I might have put him in the 'idol worth following' position.

"Atur! Why are you lagging behind! Come up here with us!" Eris suddenly shouted back at me, causing a few citizens to look.

Actually, just speaking normally would be audible. After all, we are less than ten steps apart.

"I'm standing behind to easily observe and protect Lady Eris." I smiled back.

Although the real reason is I want to walk with Ghislaine, hehe. Walking side by side like this looks like a date. Ah no, I'm still missing a few years and quite a bit of height to look like a man who can stand next to Ghislaine, but this can be considered gradual practice. So I won't be awkward later.

"I don't care!" But Eris didn't care; she came over, grabbed my collar, and dragged me along like walking a dog. "Come with us quickly!"

We walked around the upper-class area for a while then went to the commercial district. The shops here looked very luxurious; even the outdoor stalls were full of expensive items.

While I was simply walking around, Rudeus took out a pen and paper to write something down.

"What are you doing, Rudeus?"

I asked with a bit of concern because for some reason I saw him smirk.

"That's right, what are you writing?" Eris snatched Rudeus's note and read. "What are these weird characters? Sylphie, try reading it."

So Eris threw it to Sylphiette. The elf girl picked it up with confusion but instead of reading, she returned it to Rudeus. What a polite girl.

"I... I can't read other people's private things."

"It's okay, I just wrote down some miscellaneous things like prices. But thank you, Sylphy. I know I can trust you."

Rudeus smiled back and Sylphiette immediately blushed, her ears flapping up and down continuously. "Ehehe."

"Hmph, such an eyesore." Eris pouted at the scene in front of her.

Can't say that I don't have the same thought.

But actually, it's all because of you, Eris.

This scene happens very often. Occasionally Eris will do something to tease Rudeus, then Sylphiette sides with my cousin, then they say something and blush all the time. And for some reason, Eris keeps doing it. Like she's Cupid for those two people.

"But what do you plan to write prices for?" To stop the couple from looking at each other blushing, I spoke up, bringing the story back to the original track.

"Ah, to grasp the market prices." Rudeus replied.

Then he pointed out the price difference of different stalls. Then the whole group talked about buying low and selling high and stuff. Then somehow it turned into a math practice session, in front of someone else's shop.

But thanks to that, I know Eris knows how to add and subtract, consider it a good point. Besides, grasping market prices is also very useful; maybe I should also learn this habit from Rudeus to curb my habit of spending money like water.

"Ah Rudeus, can I borrow your notes?"

"Here." Rudeus gave it to me without hesitation.

And I froze a bit when reading the first line: 'aphrodisiac: price 10 gold coins' written in Japanese.

Well, it's useful information too.

We then continued to walk around the city through different shops. The most important destination was probably the bookstore; I bought Rudeus and Sylphiette each a book they liked as a welcome gift to Roa.

"Really? They're very expensive." Rudeus said that but had no intention of stopping me from paying.

"Really. I intended to buy something for you two anyway."

So I successfully paid 17 gold coins for two books I hadn't even looked at the covers of.

"Then I thank you."

"Thank you, Atur."

I was bowed to by my two friends as if I had just granted some huge favor. Although thinking back, the current book price is truly terribly high. I heard about fifty years ago they were several times more expensive than this, but thanks to Ranoa Magic University mass-producing, books, especially magic books, have dropped in price significantly. Now if someone stepped up to solve the paper price problem, it would be great.

"..."

Or maybe...

"Alright! I can't let Atur show off alone." Eris suddenly appeared in front of the group with hands on hips. "You two choose whatever you want to buy, I'll pay!"

You really want to compete with me even in this nonsense field, Eris?

"But do you have money?" I asked skeptically.

"No! But I'll ask my grandfather to pay!"

Knew it.

Somehow I feel like all three of us sighed in our hearts at the same time.

"When you earn money yourself, then think about buying gifts for others." Rudeus spoke up to advise honestly. I also felt proud because my friend is not the type ready to take advantage of others' kindness.

But on the other hand, Eris crossed her arms, looking completely unconvinced.

"Why? Isn't it enough just to give a gift?"

"But using others' money isn't right." I also chimed in.

"Does whose money it is matter that much?"

Um… How to explain this?

"I... I think if it's a gift, the important thing is the heart."

Suddenly the person speaking up was Sylphiette.

"If the recipient knows what they were given is something you put your own effort into, they will be very grateful for it. That is the true meaning of a gift."

Sylphiette ended her explanation with a smile. But for some reason, she also had to try to glance at Rudeus.

So the two of them looked at each other smiling again. I didn't understand what the hell was happening but I felt like I had become the third wheel.

And to make me worse than a third wheel, one of the two books I bought for my two friends was already in Philip's library. So 7 gold coins were wasted for nothing.

I know appreciation is priceless but I still feel like a huge idiot.

When it turned to the afternoon, we set off to return. And that was also when Perugius Dola's floating fortress Chaos Breaker flew over the city. It seems this fortress only flies around important places so this is the first time Rudeus and Sylphiette saw it. Their eyes are full of awe and very excited to see something gigantic floating on the sky like that.

"It's like coming straight out of that anime!"

"I knew you would say that." I smirked at Rudeus when I heard that line. "Yep, I had the same thought as you when I saw it for the first time. But that thing isn't Howl's Moving Castle but Chaos Breaker of Perugius Dola."

"Perugius?" Rudeus somehow doesn't recognize the name.

"I think I heard that name somewhere too." Sylphiette also.

So the rest of the journey back to Philip's mansion became a history lesson with the teacher being... Eris.

"Hehe! Lemme teach you two about The Armored Dragon King Perugius and his heroic tale!"

Yep, she didn't miss the chance to put on airs and teach the two friends from Buena village.

Basically, Eris also told part of the story of Perugius Dola and his twelve familiar subordinates in the war against Demon God Laplace four hundred years ago. I also joined in and told the rest about the existence of Dragon God Urupen, North God Kalman, and the remaining four of the 'five dragon commanders' under the Dragon God.

In addition, Perugius also has the title of Armored Dragon King, which is also the name of the current era, year 414 Armored Dragon King means 414 years since the day Laplace was defeated. Since that day, it seems Perugius has only stayed on his fortress doing nothing. Some people think he might be dead but no one can prove it.

The result was the whole group agreed to find a way to go up to Chaos Breaker in the future to see what's up there.

"History also mentions that Perugius, North God Kalman, Dragon God Urupen, and the Twin Emperors Migus and Gumis formed an adventurer party together. They are even considered the only SS-rank party to ever exist." I explained.

Usually, the adventurer's guild only has S-rank as the maximum but because of the legendary nature of the party full of heroes who participated in defeating Laplace, they have that special rank.

"The only one because I haven't become an adventurer yet!" Eris declared heroically. "After my tenth birthday, we will go register as adventurers together! And become SS rank! Or even SSS rank!"

Now she's like some kind of Main Character from those Korean webnovels.

"Ah, I don't plan to be an adventurer." Rudeus waved his hand to refuse immediately. "My mother said adventuring is very dangerous."

"I... I don't want to either." Sylphiette clearly said so because Rudeus said no.

"Me neither." I don't want to die yet. Prefer living comfortably. "But I think you would be a very good adventure by yourself Lady Eris."

And of course, the result was Eris sulking. The outcome was still me having to promise to form a party with her.

Only me, somehow.

Ah right, my exorcism bracelet didn't sell.
