Chapter 34 - The Edge of Control

The Null commander appeared at the heart of the industrial district, their presence warping the surrounding air. Corrupted Revenants moved like extensions of their will, attacking relentlessly. Kael could feel the immense pressure—the Nexus straining to keep him grounded, warning of overexertion.

"You cannot stop all of us," the commander's voice hissed, distorted and echoing through the streets. "Your limits will betray you."

Kael ignored the taunt, focusing on control. He extended the Nexus, weaving currents of energy that repelled the corrupted minions while shielding civilians and critical infrastructure. The pulse of power was intoxicating, almost overwhelming, but he forced himself to remain calm, letting the flow move through him instead of commanding it violently.

Veyra's shadows intertwined with his energy, reinforcing the barrier and stabilizing erratic pulses. "Good," she said. "But be mindful. Each surge drains more than energy—it leaves a mark. If you lose focus, the city and yourself will pay the cost."

Despite her warning, Kael pushed further, channeling massive arcs of Nexus energy to disrupt the commander's control over the corrupted forces. The city shook violently, buildings trembling, sparks flying from ruptured energy channels. He could feel the strain physically and mentally, but success demanded it.

The Null commander faltered for a brief instant, their minions staggering. Kael seized the opportunity, sending a concentrated pulse that cleared a wide area, forcing the enemy to regroup. But the cost was visible—his mark flickered irregularly, exhaustion clawing at his body, and a sharp twinge ran through his chest.

Ryken and Aria rallied, securing the immediate area while Kael caught his breath. Veyra's silver eyes regarded him with both approval and caution. "You are learning to bend the Nexus to your will, Revenant," she said. "But this is only the beginning. Overexertion leaves scars not visible to the eye. The Null commander will return—and the next encounter will demand even more from you."

Kael exhaled slowly, energy still thrumming faintly in his chest. The city remained standing, for now, but the cost of victory was clear. The war was escalating, the stakes growing ever larger—and the boundaries between this reality and the multiverse were beginning to blur under the strain of the Nexus.
