Chapter 17 - Mentorship

Seeing Eve's constipated face, Aurelia felt better.

She knew this wasn't what Eve had in mind. She wanted to find some way to humiliate her. Honestly, Aurelia didn't mind Kaelen knowing how she felt. It wasn't an embarrassment to her. She was sure there were women who had told him they liked him.

She didn't have any expectations. She simply stated what she felt and let things go from there.

Aurelia sat there eating her food, pretending she hadn't dropped a bomb. Only she knew that when she went back to her room, she would roll around on the bed a few times from excitement.

Everyone was almost finished with their food, and after Aurelia's confession, no one spoke. So they finished their food mostly in silence.

When she was about to leave, she turned to Kaelen, "I'll see you later if we decide to do the same mentorship program."

He nodded in response.

Aurelia felt light as she went back to her dorm. She would rest for a while. It was not even 1 pm yet, so she decided to take a nap. Maybe see if she can visit the space. Though she doubted it with this, Eyester, spying on her every move.

Her steps were light as she went to her room. Thinking nothing could possibly bring her mood down. And she was right, mostly.

When she walked into the dorm, Seraphina stood at her door. It was obvious she had been here for a while. The way her arms were folded, her foot tapping, the impossibly large scowl on her face.

Her irritation was so evident you could see it from space.

Aurelia didn't care why she was in front of her door. She went to the door, pushed her out of the way, opened her door, and walked in.

As soon as she closed the door, she heard the annoying knock on the door. Rubbing her temples, she realized this was going to be a long semester. If this was the way she would be greeted every day, she really wanted to ask for a change of dorm.

But the inconvenience of pushing someone every time they want to open their door is different from having the seniors or teachers dislike you on the first day. So she opted not to say anything.

What she needed to do now was sleep. She had been walking around since this morning. She wanted to rest. Plus, pulling that confession out of her ass was not the easiest thing to do.

She took off the uniform, opting to rest in her underwear. She hadn't unpacked anything. She wasn't in the mood.

Even after taking off her uniform, the pounding at her door was still going on. Aurelia wondered how she managed to have so much energy. She set an alarm to make sure she didn't oversleep.

At 3:30, the alarm went off. Aurelia opened her bleary eyes, unsure of where she was for a moment. Then she remembered she had started school at Rhea Academy.

She went to the bathroom, washed her face, brushed her teeth, and put on the uniform. Stepping out of her room, she was glad to see Seraphina wasn't there. She wasn't sure what to do if that tyrant was still at her door.

And if she were, Aurelia would definitely admire her persistence.

Walking to the lecture halls, she walked into one of the rooms. She was shocked to see the number of people there. She hadn't known that mentorship would begin, but it seemed that others did.

Looks like I need to start doing some more research.

Walking into the room, she saw a few familiar faces. Kaelen, Ashton, and Seraphina.

Kaelen and Ashton nodded to her. She responded with her own nod.

Seraphina, who was sitting next to Kaelen, saw the exchange, and if eyes could kill, Aurelia would be dead already.

Not long after she entered, a woman walked in.

There wasn't a grand entrance. Her presence alone was enough to stop the mouths of the first years. It was a sharp pressure that sliced at anyone who moved too quickly.

She had a petite frame that made the grey teacher's robe look oversized.

Silvery blonde hair pulled back into a high ponytail, yet still fell at her waist. As for her eyes, she had heterochromia. One eye was sky blue, the other was purple.

She had a heart-shaped face with high cheekbones.

Standing in front of the crowd of students, despite her delicate stature, she commanded the crowd. Everyone felt as though they were being put under a microscope and judged.

The place was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Some people seemed to have stopped breathing.

"Hello to everyone here," her soft voice bounced off the wall. It sounded as though she was trying to mesmerise the people in the room.

Aurelia frowned when she heard her voice. She didn't know what it was; there was something off about it. Like a discordant tone in an otherwise perfect piece of music.

She couldn't help looking around at the others, wanting to know if she was the only one who heard it.

She noticed Kaelen's brows furrowed. She wondered if he was experiencing the same thing.

Almost as if he knew her eyes were on him, he looked over and touched his ear. Aurelia nodded almost imperceptively.

The teacher's voice continued, "My name is Athena Crosgill. Seventy percent of you won't be able to stay in this class. Of the 30% who stay there may be another 25% who will leave or possibly die before the end of your third year. The remaining 5% could be said to have barely passed. Welcome to Battle Synergy. I will be your mentor. Teaching you all the battle magic you need to know. When I call your name, I want you to stand up."

Aurelia didn't pay attention to the names she called; she didn't know any of them. Then she heard three names being called: Kaelen Nightengale, Seraphina Winthrope, Ashton Cardinal, and Aurelia Starlight.

"The rest of you, who did not hear your names being called, get out." When she said 'get out', it was as though a deafening boom filled the classroom. Everyone covered their ears to get rid of the sound.

That did nothing. It was as if the sound was bone deep.

It only lasted for a few seconds, but it rattled Aurelia greatly.

What the hell was that?

She thought something might have happened at the school. However, her tiny teacher stood there as if she hadn't heard it. A smile curving on her lips. Whatever that was, she enjoyed it.

The people who were not called walked out, wanting to get away from the sound.

"Well, her cheery voice sounded, hello to you, my 30%. Now let's see what you're made of."

Aurelia had a feeling she should have taken potions instead.

A shiver ran down her spine at those words.
