Gerald's POV
The moment I stepped through my front door, I yanked my tie loose with enough force to leave marks on my neck. My jacket hit the couch with a dull thud, but the weight pressing against my chest remained stubbornly in place. Every muscle in my body felt wound tight, like a spring ready to snap.
The drive home had passed in a haze of blurred streetlights and muffled sounds. Everything felt surreal, as if I was watching the world through thick glass. My mind kept circling back to the same devastating image that laptop screen, that damning headline, the truth I never saw coming.
