Jefferson's POV
The past refused to stay buried. Every time I thought I had locked those memories away for good, they clawed their way back to the surface like demons seeking vengeance. Halle's magic could suppress them temporarily, but they always returned stronger, more vicious than before.
The shadows of my history followed me everywhere I went.
The moment our plane touched down from Spain, I drove straight to Halle's place. Calling ahead would have been useless. She would have taken her time responding, and I needed those memories gone now. My head had to be crystal clear, especially around Elisabeth. Whatever these feelings were that had been stirring inside me, I had to eliminate them completely.
"You realize that permanent scowl is going to give you wrinkles," Halle commented dryly as she placed a steaming mug of tea in front of me. Her knowing gaze held that familiar hint of annoyance.
