The ground beneath my feet felt unsteady, as if the earth itself had shifted when those words left my mother's lips. I had spent my entire life believing I was broken, incomplete, not good enough. My parents had made sure I understood that truth from the moment I could comprehend disappointment in their eyes.
When I came of age and no wolf emerged, that feeling of inadequacy carved itself deeper into my bones. I was hollow. Empty. Wrong.
But the emptiness hadn't begun then. It had started the day I was born.
