What sort of absurd pet name was that? More pressing was why she seemed so comfortable with the uncle of the man who had tormented her. Annoyance flared in my chest, hot and unwelcome. I knew exactly who Rex Cross was.

I had researched Andy thoroughly when considering him as a potential ally, back when I thought him worth my time. When I first encountered Elisabeth, I never imagined I would become entangled with people I regarded as so far beneath my station. Yet here I stood, trapped in the center of their pathetic drama.

Andy's gaze found Elisabeth the moment he entered the room, his expression growing harder with each step toward her.

I had to admit, she impressed me. No cowering, no shrinking away. Instead, she met his stare head-on, eyes blazing with defiance, while the woman attached to his arm—the same one he had betrayed Elisabeth with—wore a triumphant smirk as if she had claimed some precious victory.
