Chapter 11 - Shadows and sparks

Maya arrived at Cole Towers feeling unusually alert. The brief brush of warmth yesterday — Adrian leaning close over the spreadsheet — lingered in her mind, igniting a storm of curiosity, nerves, and something she wasn't ready to name.

As she stepped into the office, she immediately noticed movement near Adrian's desk. A man in a tailored suit was speaking with him, papers in hand. He laughed easily — too easily — and Maya felt a flicker of unease she couldn't explain.

Adrian's head turned slightly as she entered. His eyes met hers, sharp and assessing, and for a brief second, she caught the faintest glimmer of… something. Concern? Recognition? Or something more?

"Reed," he said finally, voice calm but deliberate. "We have a new client issue. You'll work on it with me directly."

Maya's stomach tightened. Directly? Her pulse quickened, a mixture of anticipation and dread. She nodded, trying to steady herself.

As they began reviewing documents together, she noticed the other man lingering nearby, glancing at Adrian occasionally, as if claiming some unspoken stake. Adrian's posture shifted subtly when he noticed Maya's gaze. He didn't speak about it, but the slight tension in his shoulders didn't go unnoticed.

Maya focused on the reports, trying to push the discomfort aside. But she felt it — the tension between them, intensified by the presence of someone else, someone Adrian acknowledged but didn't introduce fully.

"Do you see the discrepancy here?" Adrian asked, pointing to a line in the report.

"Yes," Maya replied immediately. She highlighted it, showing her insight without hesitation.

Adrian's eyes flicked to hers, a shadow of approval there, fleeting but unmistakable. "Good. You're learning to anticipate more than the numbers. That's… rare."

Her cheeks flushed. The praise, subtle though it was, made her pulse flutter. But she kept her focus. She wasn't here for validation. She was here to survive and excel.

Minutes later, the other man excused himself, leaving the room. Adrian straightened, turning toward Maya fully for the first time that day.

"You handled that well," he said, his voice quiet, almost intimate. "Better than I expected."

Maya felt heat rise to her cheeks. "Thank you, sir."

He stepped slightly closer, and for a heartbeat, the space between them shrank again. His eyes held hers, dark and unreadable, and Maya felt the pull she had been trying to ignore all week.

"You're too close to understanding me," he murmured, low enough that she barely heard it. "Closer than most can manage."

Maya swallowed hard. "And that's… dangerous?"

He smirked faintly, the corner of his mouth curling. "Perhaps. Or maybe it's… useful."

The words lingered in the air between them. Neither moved, yet the tension was thick, almost tangible. Maya's heart raced as she realized something undeniable: she was being drawn into his storm, willingly, despite every instinct screaming caution.

As she returned to her desk later, she realized the truth. Cole Towers wasn't just a place of work. It was a battlefield of intellect, secrets, and emotions she hadn't prepared for. And Adrian Cole was the eye of the storm — captivating, dangerous, and completely inescapable.

And for the first time, Maya wondered if she even wanted to escape.
