Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — Giving Up

Ava sat outside the hospital on an old metal bench, the kind that stole warmth from your skin the second you touched it. The evening wind pushed against her like it wanted her to fall apart completely. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking, and she didn't know if it was the cold breeze… or everything happening inside her life.

The sky looked dull and pale.

Tired.

Just like her.

She pulled her thin jacket tighter around her body, but it didn't help. Nothing seemed to help anymore.

Her mom was still sick.

The bills were still rising.

And Ava… she was at her limit.

Not the kind of limit sleep could fix.

But the deep, heavy kind that made her chest feel like it was breaking from the inside.

Ava bent forward and pressed her hands to her face. Her fingers were cold, shaking, and she could feel the sting of tears she refused to let fall.

"Why me?" she whispered.

"Why now?"

Her voice was so small, it was almost carried away by the wind.

Ava wasn't the type to cry loudly. She never liked people noticing her pain. Her sadness always came quietly, like it was scared of causing trouble. But today… it felt too big to hide.

She had tried everything.

She worked double shifts until her feet burned and her back felt like it was cracking.

She sold her clothes, her shoes, her bags—anything that wasn't necessary.

She borrowed from people who barely looked at her.

She skipped meals until her stomach tightened painfully.

But nothing changed.

Every effort felt like pouring water into a bucket with a hole at the bottom.

And the doctor's words kept echoing in her head like a nightmare she couldn't escape:

"She needs surgery soon… or her condition may become dangerous."

Dangerous.

That one word kept stabbing her chest.

Ava straightened slowly and pressed her palm against her heart as if she could calm it down. But nothing worked. The fear wouldn't leave her body. It wrapped around her, squeezing until breathing felt difficult.

For the first time in her life… Ava felt like giving up.

People always said she was strong.

That she didn't bend easily.

That she had fire in her eyes.

But right now, she didn't feel strong.

She didn't feel brave.

She didn't feel like fire.

She felt like a small candle, flickering in the wind, one breath away from going out completely.

The hospital entrance lights flickered on as the sky grew darker. Ava stared at the glass doors, wishing—begging—for good news. Wishing someone would come out and tell her the surgery had been paid for, or that her mother had suddenly gotten better.

But life didn't give her miracles.

Not the kind she wanted, not the kind she needed.

A small breeze blew hair across her face, and she didn't even bother moving it. She just sat there, numb, tired, and unsure of what she would do next.

Her phone suddenly buzzed in her pocket.

Ava slowly lifted her head. For a moment, a tiny spark of hope lit inside her. Maybe someone replied to her message. Maybe someone agreed to lend her money. Maybe—just maybe—something good finally happened.

But when she read the message, her heart dropped like a stone.

From: Hospital Finance Office

Message: "If payment is not made by Friday, treatment will be delayed."

Friday.

Only three days away.

A weak gasp left her mouth, and her vision blurred. Her hands trembled so much she almost dropped her phone.

Delayed treatment meant danger.

Delayed treatment meant her mother would suffer.

Delayed treatment meant she had failed.

She covered her mouth with her shaking hand, trying to push down the sob rising in her throat.

"Please… please not now," she whispered, her voice breaking.

Her chest hurt.

Her head hurt.

Her whole life hurt.

She felt small.

She felt powerless.

She felt like the world had closed its door on her and thrown away the key.

But even in the middle of that pain, something inside her refused to die completely. A small voice. Soft, but stubborn.

"Don't give up…"

Ava sniffed and wiped her face with the back of her hand. Her eyes were red and tired, but she forced herself to sit straighter.

She wasn't done.

She couldn't be done.

Not while her mom was still fighting inside that hospital.

Maybe she didn't know where the money would come from.

Maybe she didn't know what tomorrow looked like.

Maybe she had nothing left to give.

But she stood up anyway.

Her legs felt heavy—like she was dragging all her worries with her—but she stood. She took a deep breath, let the cold air fill her lungs, and forced herself to keep going.

Because sometimes surviving was all she could do.

Ava wrapped her arms around herself and stepped forward. The hospital lights glowed behind her like they were silently watching her leave. She walked slowly, her steps unsure, but she didn't stop.

She was hurting.

She was scared.

But she was moving.

And she didn't know it yet—couldn't even imagine it—but life was already shifting around her.

Something unexpected was coming.

Something she never planned for.

Something that would pull her into a world far above her own.

Just as she reached the edge of the parking lot, her phone buzzed again.

She stopped

.

Her breath caught in her chest.

A new message.

Not from the finance office.

Not from a friend.

Not from anyone familiar.

From: Doctor Rivera

Message: "Ava… something has changed with your mother.

Please come immediately.

Ava's heart slammed hard against her ribs.

Cold fear rushed through her body.

Something had changed?

What happened?

Was it worse?

Was she too late?

She turned and ran back toward the hospital, not knowing that this moment… this message… this step…

…was about to change her entire life forever.
