Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2: An unexpected visit.

Mabel's POV

I was busy editing a script on my computer when Max nudged me and told me to look at someone. I turned in the direction he pointed, and there he was, the famous business tycoon's son, Jake Nolan.

He wore a two-piece black suit with matching loafers, looking like he had just stepped out of a billionaire catalog. A powerful aura radiated off him; everything about him screamed wealth and intimidation. He was accompanied by the owner of our company and two other men I assumed were his bodyguards. Jake was surveying the workplace while my boss practically bent over backward explaining things to him.

As expected, the girls around me turned bright red and immediately forgot what "focus" meant. I rolled my eyes and calmly returned to my work, pretending they were invisible.

"Everyone, please welcome Mr. Jake Nolan! One of the most successful business tycoons," our boss announced, snapping my attention.

The girls switched immediately into seductive mode, fake soft voices, batting eyelashes, the whole embarrassing package. I was pissed. They nearly tripped over themselves greeting him.

When they approached my desk, I deliberately rolled my eyes right at him and muttered, "Good morning," under my breath. I didn't care if he heard.

"Such a feisty little woman. I like that," a deep masculine voice said.

I looked up, and of course it was him. I ignored him completely and went back to typing. After their little inspection, they headed upstairs to continue their tour.

The moment they left, Max nudged me again.

"Feisty little woman, huh? Can't believe you caught his attention just by being nonchalant!"

"Did you really think he would be interested in men?" I asked sarcastically.

"Stop it, Mabel. I'm not gay!" Max said, offended.

"We can never know," I teased, and he shot me a glare.

"Anyway, I pray you two link up. And when you do, beg him to give me a job in his company!"

"Never."

"Feisty! That's why you don't have a man."

"I don't need one. Face your work, Max."

"Alright, alright, I'll leave you alone."

"Finally, some peace and quiet."

"I heard that!"

I ignored him and continued typing. But as I worked, I couldn't stop thinking about what that perverted billionaire had said.

Feisty little woman… I like that.

I hissed. "Just who does he think he is? Calling me little?"

Sir, I am 5'9—almost 6ft. How dare you?!

I rolled my eyes and kept working.

Lunch time came and, because of my earlier teasing, Max didn't get me anything. I had to walk over to the water dispenser myself and fill my bottle with cold water. On my way back, I bumped into Fiona, who was already in full fangirl mode.

"Girl, did you see him?! He's so huge… oh, the muscles!" she said, literally fanning herself.

"Yep. I saw him. And really, Fiona? You're like this because of that arrogant man?"

"Hey! Watch it. He's not arrogant."

"All rich men are, Fiona." I placed my hands on her shoulders and adjusted her collar.

"Whatever. He's different!"

"You don't even know him."

"Yes I do. I haven't spent sleepless nights stalking his account for nothing!"

My eyes widened. "You're obsessed."

"Sadly, yes. But what can I do? He doesn't even know I exist." She looked down dramatically.

"Sorry, babe. Pick someone your own size." I bent to whisper in her ear. "Max has a crush on you. Give him a chance. There might be chemistry."

"Really?! Thanks, girl!" she squealed.

We parted ways, and I returned to my desk with the most mischievous grin.

"What have you done now?" Max asked.

"Relax, Max. You'll thank me later."

He eyed me suspiciously but said nothing.

Fiona was a short, petite woman with an hourglass figure, while Max was 6ft tall, gym-built and masculine. Honestly, they'd make a cute couple. I smiled to myself.

---

We were closing late today because we had to wait for the boss. Apparently, Mr Arrogant Pervert had something to say to us.

"It better be something good," I muttered as we waited for them to come downstairs.

After a few minutes, Jake and our boss, Mr. Felix, came down. Mr. Felix cleared his throat.

"Good evening, my esteemed staff. Today, we have been honored with Mr. Jake's presence. As we all know, his recently established media company is now number one in the state. And luckily for us, Mr. Jake has come to pick an editor to have him or her transferred to his company."

"Editor…" I whispered. The only editors here were Max and me.

"It better be Max."

"Please let's clap for Miss Mabel Rosewood! She has been chosen! Miss Mabel, come forward!"

My legs froze.

WHAT?!

I screamed internally. Me? Chosen to work for this arrogant pervert?!

I forced myself up and walked to the podium. Mr. Felix shook my hand.

"Congratulations, Miss Mabel. You will now be working for Jake's Media Enterprises."

The men clapped, while the women burned holes into me with their eyes.

The meeting ended. Only a few people stayed back to congratulate me. Fiona and Max pulled me into tight hugs.

Fiona:

"Girllll, you're so lucky! Congratulations!"

Max:

"I guess your feistiness and hard work earned you this! Don't forget us, my friend. Don't you dare forget us!"

"Of course I won't. I'm still shocked though…"

"Miss Mabel?" someone called.

"Yes?"

"Transfer all your files to Max's computer. You're to resume at Jake's Media Enterprises by Thursday."

"Geez… no break?" I lamented.

The three of us walked out of the company together, said our goodbyes, and parted ways.

I took my laptop home along with Max's flash drive to transfer the needed files.

My neighborhood was full of old people, so by this time they had all gone to bed. Everywhere was quiet. I unlocked my apartment, turned on the lights, and got ready for the night's work. After freshening up, I transferred all the important files and documents. I finished around 8:30pm, shut down my laptop, and placed Max's flash drive in my bag next to it. I planned to return it tomorrow, it was company property, after all.
