Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: awakening

The streets of the city were no longer quiet. Cracks in the pavement hummed with strange energy, and the air tasted electric. Emily's heartbeat quickened—not with fear, but anticipation. The system pulsed in her mind:

"Task 5: Scout and survive high-risk zones. Reward: Power amplification."

Her fingers glowed with faint fire as she scanned the surroundings. Every alley, every ruined building could conceal threats. This was the first taste of the apocalypse she had been preparing for.

"Emily, wait!" her friend called, stepping from the shadows. They seemed overly eager, too close. "Be careful. Some areas aren't safe."

Emily narrowed her eyes. "I can handle myself," she said firmly. Trust, she reminded herself, was earned—not freely given.

As they moved deeper into the district, a man appeared ahead of them. At first, he looked ordinary, but a faint aura began to shimmer around his body. Emily's system pinged: "Potential power detected. Probability of hostility: High."

Her heart rate rose. The man's eyes glowed an eerie violet, and with a subtle flick of his wrist, debris lifted into the air—rocks, concrete, even chunks of asphalt floated menacingly around him.

Emily's fire flared instinctively. She was ready.

"Stay back," she commanded, keeping her friend behind her. But the friend stepped forward slightly, offering a hand, a seemingly helpful gesture. Emily's instincts screamed otherwise. Something in their eyes—a hint of excitement that didn't belong—set her nerves on edge.

The man lunged, throwing a boulder with terrifying precision. Emily dodged, fire crackling from her fingertips. The system's voice guided her movements:

"Dodge successful. Counterattack available. Reward: Reflex enhancement."

She struck, flames spiraling into the floating rocks, sending shards scattering. The man staggered, but his aura flared even brighter. He wasn't ordinary; this was only the beginning.

Emily's friend lingered near him, whispering words Emily couldn't quite hear. Her suspicion solidified—they weren't just a bystander. In her previous life, betrayal had worn a familiar mask. She would not be fooled again.

Suddenly, from the shadows above, a figure appeared: Gabriel. Silent, poised, arms folded, his gaze never leaving the threat. He did nothing overt, but the enemy's movements faltered slightly, as if sensing his presence. Emily felt a flicker of relief. She didn't need him to fight—just knowing he was there was enough for now.

Emily focused. She ignited a larger flame, sending a controlled wave toward the man. The impact sent him crashing into a wall, stunned but not defeated. She felt the system pulse, rewarding her enhanced combat strength.

The friend finally spoke, voice laced with feigned concern. "Emily, maybe we should retreat. This is dangerous."

Emily's eyes met theirs. Her tone was ice. "You're no ally to me. I'll decide when to retreat."

The friend's smile faltered for the briefest moment before they masked it again. Emily made a mental note: she would need to watch them closely, especially as powers fully awakened across the city.

As the man scrambled to his feet, Emily's flames burned brighter. The battle was far from over, but she had survived. And with the system guiding her, with Gabriel silently observing, she knew she could handle whatever the apocalypse—or her betraying friend
