Chapter 172 - Chapter 172: Forbidden Art · Transmigration of the Returning Soul! The Self-Sacrificing Elf Tribe

When she heard her own name—Fana—spoken aloud,

the haze in Fana's sky-blue eyes gradually cleared. She lifted her head and looked at the person standing before her: a mysterious figure wearing a mask, his clothes scorched and burned in several places.

"Y-you are…?"

She instinctively drew her neck back, her voice tinged with fear.

"I'm Mars's friend. You were previously possessed by another soul. You've only just awakened again," Yuuki said calmly, seeing her nervousness and offering a gentle explanation.

At those words, fragments of her remaining memories finally surfaced.

"Thank you…"

The tension drained from Fana's expression. She raised her hand and placed it into the palm Yuuki extended toward her, allowing him to pull her up from the ground.

Still a little weak, she steadied herself. Facing the masked Yuuki, and unable to grasp the situation yet, she asked carefully, "Um… where is Mars?"

"He still has other matters to attend to."

Yuuki answered lightly.

After that, he gave Fana a brief once-over. Seeing that she was in no immediate danger, his interest in the forbidden reincarnation magic deepened even further.

Forbidden Magic · Transmigration of the Returning Soul—that was the name of this reincarnation spell.

In most worlds, death was irreversible. Whether rebirth or resurrection, both demanded a tremendous price. And yet this magic allowed elves who had been dead for five hundred years to revive by reincarnating within humans of similar wavelengths.

Calling it powerful would be an understatement.

Aside from causing some emotional side effects, it had almost no drawbacks at all. Compared to true resurrection, those emotional repercussions were practically negligible.

Yuuki could easily imagine it—so long as the soul itself did not perish, proper use of this forbidden art could grant someone a state very close to immortality.

Resurrection. Immortality.

In any world, those two words alone were enough to drive people mad.

The name of the Word Soul Devil, Zagred, surfaced in Yuuki's mind. Acquiring this reincarnation spell from such an existence would be unimaginably difficult. Even the "Evil Eye Forbidden Art" in Licht's possession was nothing more than a fragment of this greater spell.

Fana looked around at the surroundings—scorched by flames, reduced to a barren wasteland—before cautiously glancing at Yuuki at her side, who stood there masked and relaxed.

She didn't know what had happened, but it was clear that this charred land was the aftermath of an intense battle.

Several thoughts flashed through her mind. Compared to when the elf Fana had possessed her, her expression now was far more gentle and lively. She clasped her hands at her chest and stood quietly beside Yuuki.

Yuuki slightly raised his head, his calm gaze fixed on the distant edge of the Witch's Forest. He could still sense violent fluctuations of magic there.

Rebecca and the others should be finishing up their battle soon.

The Eye of the Midnight Sun members were indeed formidable, but Mariella and the others all possessed dual magic now. Coupled with their surging mana, their strength was well beyond the Three Realms level—

roughly on par with the average combat power of the Eight Shining Generals.

Of course, that still wasn't their limit. After all, they hadn't possessed dual magic for very long yet.

Magic Knights needed time to grow. Mana increased naturally with age and training.

Someone like Yuuki, whose strength skyrocketed across levels, was exceedingly rare—aside from Asta and Yuno, there were barely any similar cases in the entire history of the Clover Kingdom.

Rebecca in particular, having inherited Fuego Leon's mana source, had an even higher ceiling.

"Don't be nervous. Your situation is a bit complicated. The Diamond Kingdom isn't a good place for you right now," Yuuki said gently.

"Once you've learned what happened while you were possessed, I'll arrange for you to meet Mars."

He withdrew his perception and turned to Fana, who was doing her best to remain calm.

Even in complete confusion, she maintained composure and steadiness. That alone surprised Yuuki a little.

And there was more.

Yuuki didn't know what Fana's talent had been like before, but after being possessed by the elf Fana, her mana reserves—and her understanding of fire magic—had both increased significantly.

A different kind of power-up, one might say.

In the anime, anyone whose body had once been occupied by an elf through reincarnation experienced a dramatic boost in both strength and mana afterward.

To Yuuki, this was nothing short of an epic-level enhancement for the entire Magic Knights squad.

The elf tribe that "sacrificed themselves for others."

Five hundred years ago, their magic was stolen by the Clover Kingdom's royalty and nobility. Five hundred years later, through reincarnation, they once again increased the power of their former enemies.

If that wasn't self-sacrifice, what was?

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

Three sharp sounds tore through the air as figures rushed in from afar.

In the blink of an eye, Rebecca, Neige, and Mariella descended from the sky and landed in front of Yuuki.

Yuuki's gaze swept over them quickly. Aside from torn black robes and their labored breathing, none of the three were injured.

"My lord, all members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun have been eliminated. Those who survived have been sealed in space," Mariella reported solemnly.

As she finished speaking, her eyes immediately fell on Fana, surprise flashing across her face.

"Hehe! Lord Yuuki, I didn't let any of our companions get hurt," Neige said cheerfully, scratching his snow-white hair.

"Good work, Neige. And you two as well," Yuuki said, patting Neige lightly on the shoulder before turning to Rebecca. "How do you feel? Still adapting?"

"Of course!" Rebecca's eyes sparkled as she nodded vigorously.

After fighting the Eye of the Midnight Sun, there was no trace of nervousness or fear left on her face. Instead, excitement gleamed in her blue-green eyes.

"That's good," Yuuki said with a smile.

He had almost forgotten—Rebecca had always been hot-blooded by nature. It was only because she'd had to take care of her younger siblings and manage endless responsibilities that her personality had been suppressed.

Looking at her auburn hair and the curves revealed through her torn robe, Yuuki could faintly see a hint of Mereoleona reflected in her.

"My lord… who is she?" Mariella asked gravely.

If she remembered correctly, this red-haired girl was the terrifying mage who had fought Yuuki earlier. And yet now, Mariella sensed no killing intent from her at all—no hostility whatsoever.

"Ah, I forgot to introduce her. This is Fana. The situation's a bit complicated, but you can think of it as her having been controlled by the Eye of the Midnight Sun. She's only just recovered," Yuuki explained briefly.

Only then did understanding dawn on their faces.

"What a cute little lizard!" Rebecca blinked, her eyes lighting up as she looked at the fire salamander perched on Yuuki's shoulder.

"That's no ordinary lizard—it's Salamander, the Fire Spirit, one of the Four Great Spirits!"

"As expected of you, my lord… to be chosen by a spirit like that," Mariella said reverently.

Unlike Rebecca and Neige, she knew exactly what that meant. The Four Great Spirits were living legends, recorded clearly in every nation.

Those chosen by spirits were always geniuses among geniuses—and had to be mages aligned with one of the four great elements. Under normal circumstances, someone like Yuuki, who wielded multiple attributes, should never have been chosen.

Seeing such a contradiction to common sense with her own eyes, it was impossible not to be shocked.

But then again…

After everything she'd already witnessed at Yuuki's side, that shock quickly faded.

Yuuki chuckled helplessly, then his tone turned firm—almost stern.

"Since the Eye of the Midnight Sun has been dealt with, you'll escort Fana back to Domina and continue preparing according to the original plan."

At the word "prepare," Mariella's expression sharpened instantly.

"What about you?" Rebecca asked quickly.

"The matters in the Witch's Forest from here on are beyond your involvement. I'll handle things here myself," Yuuki said, shaking his head. Then he turned to Neige. "Neige."

"Leave it to me, Lord Yuuki! I'll protect everyone," Neige said at once, standing straight with a serious expression.

"No need to be that tense," Yuuki said lightly with a laugh.

Though Mariella had been the first to gain a second magic and possessed impressive assassination skills, among the three before him, the strongest was actually Neige—the one who had joined later.
