Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – Yuuki, Who Couldn’t Understand His Own Magic

At the edge of the Clover Kingdom, near the remote outskirts of Hage Village—

Sunlight streamed gently through the trees, scattering golden rays across the forest floor.

The air was alive with the rustling of insects and the chirping of birds, their sounds echoing softly between the trunks.

There, by the forest's border, a moss-covered stone half the height of a man stood quietly.

Seated cross-legged upon it was a boy of fourteen or fifteen, his short black hair swaying faintly in the breeze. His features were handsome, his nose high and straight. With his eyes half-closed, he sat in a meditative posture, motionless and serene.

The scent of the forest—damp earth mixed with green leaves—calmed him further, allowing his thoughts to still.

Tap.

Like a single drop of water falling into a tranquil lake, a faint ripple passed through his mind.

Yuuki had entered a special, empty-minded state. In that stillness, he could sense something—an invisible current flowing gently through the air around him. The energy wasn't dense, but it was undeniably there, woven into the fabric of nature itself.

Mana.

The supernatural power that existed throughout this world, and within every living being.

In this meditative state, Yuuki could faintly perceive the flow of mana in the air. And under that influence, the mana within his own body began to resonate with the mana outside, linking together like threads of water meeting in a stream.

For a brief moment, it felt as though his mana had increased—

Or at least, it seemed that way.

The change was so minuscule that, if not for his heightened focus, he might've thought it an illusion.

"...Phew."

After a while, Yuuki exhaled softly and opened his eyes.

He wasn't originally from this world.

In truth, he was a transmigrator—someone who had crossed over from another reality.

This was the world of Black Clover.

Before his reincarnation, he had just finished watching the anime, even joking about how absurd it was that the final villain turned out to be the Wizard King himself.

Then, he'd blinked—

And when his eyes opened again, he found himself here.

His adult body was gone, replaced by that of a boy barely ten years old. Fortunately, he'd appeared near Hage Village, where he eventually ran into the two "dual protagonists" of the story: Asta and Yuno.

Claiming to have lost his memory, Yuuki was taken in by the church.

That was five years ago.

"Looks like I've hit the limit… I can't seem to increase my mana any further."

He muttered in mild frustration.

In this world, mana was everything. Power, status, even destiny—all of it stemmed from the strength of one's magical energy.

When he first realized he'd landed in the world of Black Clover, Yuuki had been thrilled. After all, this was a place where people wielded magic—a power as mysterious and individualistic as Nen from Hunter x Hunter.

And compared to a world like Naruto, where you could die in a random clan feud, this one seemed far safer.

But that excitement hadn't lasted long.

Yuuki soon discovered a cruel truth:

He had no mana whatsoever.

Even worse—he didn't get a system, either!

That combination had driven him to the brink of despair.

Still, there was one small comfort: because of his lack of mana, he got along best with Asta.

The two were kindred spirits—fellow "mana-less" outcasts.

Asta, who'd always believed himself to be the only one in the world without magic, was ecstatic to meet someone like him, convinced he'd found a true comrade.

Yuuki's condition even left the church members bewildered.

But that didn't last. Over time, Asta's hopes were crushed when they discovered something unusual—

Yuuki did have mana.

According to a doctor the priest brought in, Yuuki had merely suffered a temporary depletion of mana—an overuse that had caused his reserves to bottom out.

The church even speculated that this "mana exhaustion" was what caused his supposed memory loss.

Of course, Yuuki knew that wasn't the case.

He drew in a quiet breath, focusing his thoughts once more—

And in the stillness of his heart, willed his magic to stir.

Under his steady gaze, the silvery mana began to boil, its form twisting and shifting. In an instant, it turned into a small flame flickering in his hand. The flame morphed again into a gust of wind, then into soil, then water, and finally returned to the form of fire once more.

Yuuki raised his other hand and reached into the flame. There was no heat, no pain.

Because it wasn't real.

No matter what shape it took—fire, wind, earth, or water—it was only an imitation. The essence remained the same: that same amorphous silver mana, unchanged in nature.

"As I thought… I still can't figure out what kind of magic I actually have."

He waved his hand, dispersing the energy, and rubbed his temples in frustration.

Ever since awakening to his mana, Yuuki had been trying to understand the nature of his magic. But even after all this time, he had no clear answer.

He'd managed to summarize three traits so far:

His mana possessed a mutable property—it could take on the form of anything, but never the essence of what it became.

For example: it could become fire, but it wouldn't burn; become steel, yet remain soft; look like water, but stay dry.It could not extend beyond his body. Whenever he tried to project it outward, it simply dissipated. It had no offensive or destructive power whatsoever—at least, not yet.

These, as far as he could tell, were the defining characteristics of his magic.

Yuuki suspected his ability wasn't a typical elemental type at all. It might be something closer to Captain Rill's Painting Magic of the Aqua Deer squad—a magic that required a medium to truly manifest power.

In this world, magic was deeply tied to one's soul and will. Even among mages who used the same element, the nature of their spells differed according to their individual spirit and imagination.

Yuuki had once tried to visualize the power he wanted most, hoping his imagination would reveal the nature of his magic.

But having seen too many amazing abilities and grand attacks in anime back in his old world, his mind was flooded with options. He couldn't decide on what he truly wanted—and perhaps because of that confusion, his magic could mimic anything, yet possessed nothing.

"Looks like I'll only know for sure once I get my grimoire," he sighed to himself.

Just then—

"Yuuki!"

"Yuuki! I'm hereee!"

A wild, exuberant voice howled from the left side of the forest, startling a flock of birds into flight.

Before long, a short, muscular boy with spiky gray hair burst out from between the trees, charging toward Yuuki with boundless energy.

"There you are!" he shouted. "Man, I'm so jealous! Just sitting around like that actually helps you increase your mana? That's so unfair! Why's it only work for you?"

Asta's face was a picture of admiration mixed with envy, though deep in his eyes flickered a brief trace of disappointment—gone in an instant.

"Could you please lower your voice a little, Asta?"

Yuuki winced, rubbing his abused ears. "And for the record, it's not called sitting around—it's called meditation. Even if it doesn't increase mana, it helps improve focus and calms the mind."

Honestly, he'd nearly dropped the anime back then because of Asta's sheer volume. The kid was always screaming. As the "Roaring Emperor" he truly lived up to his nickname.

In truth, meditation didn't increase mana at all.

In the world of Black Clover, one's mana capacity was determined at birth—essentially, a form of innate talent.

But Yuuki's case was unusual enough that everyone at the church thought it was some kind of family technique, speculating that he might be the illegitimate son of a noble.

After all, magic attributes were hereditary here; children often inherited one parent's element, or a combination of both.

Of course, Yuuki wasn't anyone's noble bastard.

He came from Earth—a completely ordinary world with no such thing as mana in the first place.
