The next morning arrived far too early. I was halfway through pretending to be an innocent, well-rested noblewoman when Henry caught me in the corridor outside the women's building. Arms crossed. Jaw tight. Eyes sharp. "You went out last night."

I stopped. Slowly turned. "…Good morning to you too?"

"That's not an answer." He took a step closer, lowering his voice. "I checked your room. Your boots were gone. And don't insult me by pretending you sleep with your daggers under the pillow like that."

Damn it. I widened my eyes just enough. Let confusion flicker first—then embarrassment. The real kind. Or at least convincing enough.

"I—" I hesitated. Looked away. Let my fingers curl into the sleeve of my tunic. "I couldn't sleep."

Henry's expression didn't soften. "You went alone."
