đŠALTHEA
Her hard edge was gone, replaced with something that surprised me and made the tears fall faster.
"And though the world might turn you away, never giving, never loving, only always taking, I will be here. I do not exist without you."
I pressed my face into the pillow, my chest heaving with sobs I couldn't contain anymore.
"But remember what I've always told you," she continued, her voice gentling even as the warning sharpened. "Give them your body if you must. Give them your strength, your blood, your fight. But never your heart, Althea. Never that."
I squeezed my eyes shut tighter, but it didn't stop the tears.
"When he breaks youâand he will, because they all do eventuallyâI will be here to hold the pieces. I will gather what's left of you and we will survive. We always survive."
"He's different," I whispered, barely audible even to myself.
