Three days later, they were called to a kidnapping case.
A seventeen-year-old girl had been abducted outside her coaching institute. Surveillance footage showed a masked group dragging her into a van. The pattern matched a trafficking network they had been tracking for months.
Mahi stared at the screen in the briefing room, jaw tightening.
Nikhil noticed immediately.
The room filled with team members discussing leads, vehicle tracing, and timeline reconstruction. But Mahi's focus stayed locked on the paused frame of the girl struggling against her kidnappers.
Her fingers curled into fists unconsciously.
Nikhil leaned slightly closer. "You okay?"
She nodded once. Too quickly.
During field investigation, they traced the van to an abandoned construction site near the highway.
The environment felt eerily familiar — isolated, unfinished concrete structures, exposed wiring, echoing corridors.
Mahi's steps slowed slightly as they entered the building.
Nikhil walked beside her, alert in more ways than one.
They split into two tactical search teams. Standard protocol.
But when the team leader instructed Mahi to take the eastern stairwell with another officer, Nikhil spoke before thinking.
"I'll go with her."
The room went quiet for half a second.
Rana raised an eyebrow. "That's not the assigned formation."
"She works better with me," Nikhil said calmly.
Mahi glanced at him, surprised but silent.
Rana studied both of them carefully, then sighed. "Fine. Stay professional."
They moved toward the stairwell together.
Inside, the air smelled like dust and stagnant water. Footsteps echoed loudly through empty floors.
Halfway up, they heard a faint noise — a muffled cry.
Mahi froze.
Her pulse jumped instantly. Her breathing hitched. The sound triggered memories she didn't want.
Nikhil noticed.
"Mahi," he said quietly, grounding, steady.
She blinked rapidly, forcing herself back into the present.
"I hear it," she whispered.
They followed the sound toward a locked storage room. Nikhil signaled backup through radio while Mahi scanned the door hinges and locking mechanism.
Her hands trembled slightly as she prepared to break the lock.
He placed his hand gently over hers.
"Breathe," he murmured.
She inhaled slowly, steadying herself.
Then she nodded.
Together, they forced the door open.
Inside, the kidnapped girl sat tied to a metal chair — terrified but alive.
The sight hit Mahi like a wave. For a second, memories overlapped with reality. Her vision blurred.
The girl sobbed, struggling weakly against ropes.
"Mahi," Nikhil whispered again, anchoring her.
She swallowed hard and stepped forward anyway.
"It's okay," she told the girl softly, kneeling in front of her. "You're safe now."
Her voice trembled slightly but didn't break.
She untied the ropes carefully while Nikhil scanned the room for threats.
When the girl collapsed forward, shaking, Mahi instinctively pulled her into a protective embrace.
The moment lasted only seconds before backup arrived.
But Nikhil saw everything.
The fear. The courage. The way she pushed through trauma instead of running from it.
Aftermath — When Love Became Strength
Outside the building, ambulance lights flashed across the night sky. The rescued girl was taken for medical evaluation. The team dispersed into paperwork and follow-up tasks.
Mahi stood near the patrol vehicle, staring at her hands.
"They were shaking," she said quietly.
"You still saved her," Nikhil replied.
She looked up at him, eyes glassy but steady.
"I was scared."
"You were brave anyway," he said.
She exhaled slowly. "That didn't feel like bravery."
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "It felt like survival. And survival counts."
She studied his face carefully.
"Were you scared for me?" she asked.
"Yes," he answered honestly.
"Did it affect your judgment?"
He paused… then nodded once.
"Good," she said.
He frowned slightly. "Good?"
"It means we'll have to learn how to balance it," she explained softly. "Not ignore it."
He stared at her for a moment… then smiled faintly.
"You're turning emotional conflict into operational strategy," he said.
She shrugged slightly. "That's how I cope."
He reached out, brushing his thumb gently across her knuckles — small, private comfort hidden from the rest of the team.
"I'm proud of you," he said quietly.
Her eyes softened.
"Stay," she whispered.
"I'm not going anywhere," he replied.
This time, neither of them said it out of fear.
They said it because they believed it.
