Chapter 18 - Chapter 17: The Armor-Piercing Rhino

We had barely left the safety of the cave when the forest seemed to close in around us. The thicket was dense, vines wrapping around trees, thorned bushes scratching at our clothes and skin. Each step required careful navigation, and the spiral map pulsed faintly, urging caution.

Alex stayed close, his hand brushing mine as we moved. "Alaric… do you feel that?" he whispered.

I scanned the shadows. "Something's coming. Stay alert."

The warning came too late. A low, guttural snort erupted from the underbrush, shaking the air with its power. Before we could react, the intermediate-tier Armor-Piercing Rhino charged. Its thick, jagged armor plates gleamed even in the dim light, and its horn—long, jagged, and razor-sharp—seemed capable of tearing through anything. Its eyes were small but intelligent, fixed on us with predatory intent.

Time slowed. I could feel the pulse of my mana, ready and flowing, but the rhino's speed was terrifying. It smashed through the vines like they were paper, thorns snapping against its thick hide. I grabbed Alex, pushing him to the side just as its horn slammed into the space we had occupied seconds ago.

The force threw me violently to the ground. Pain exploded along my shoulder and ribs. Dirt and leaves filled my mouth. I scrambled up, gasping, feeling the rush of blood through my body, adrenaline surging alongside my mana. The rhino circled, its heavy steps vibrating through the earth, charging again.

I sent a blast of controlled mana toward its side, but the armor deflected much of it. Sparks and debris flew, and the ground shook with each impact. The rhino's horn lashed out, striking a tree with a deafening crack, splinters raining around me. I rolled, narrowly avoiding being impaled.

"Alaric!" Alex screamed, panic threading his voice.

I could see it—our lives balanced on a knife's edge. My mana pulsed violently, but I forced control, channeling energy into my legs and arms to dodge, strike, and redirect the beast. Each pulse was measured, precise, but the rhino's raw power kept me on the defensive.

Then it charged again, faster than I expected. I dodged, but the tip of its horn grazed my side, tearing through my clothes and scraping my skin. Pain flared sharply, and I stumbled, coughing, blood mixing with dirt. Every breath was a struggle. I realized then: I might not survive this.

Alex's eyes were wide, terror and desperation mixing into a rare intensity I had never seen before. He took a step forward, then froze, shaking. I saw the faint shimmer—the same pulse I felt when controlling mana, but this time emanating from him.

"Alex… no! Stay back!" I gasped, though my voice was weak.

He shook his head, his hands trembling. "I… I can't… I won't… let you die!"

The energy radiating from him intensified, warm and golden, and I felt a strange comfort spread through my body even as my injuries burned. He placed his hands over my chest, over the worst of the wounds, and whispered something—words I barely understood but felt deeply.

A soft, golden light flowed from him into me, weaving through my broken bones, torn skin, and bruised muscles. Pain still existed, but it receded rapidly, replaced by a warmth that filled every corner of my body. My mana responded, stabilizing, flowing through me as if Alex's energy had opened new channels.

The rhino charged again. I realized I couldn't leave Alex exposed to it. Summoning the last of my strength, I hurled a precise, controlled mana blast at the ground near its hooves. The shockwave staggered it, giving Alex just enough time to step back.

I stumbled forward, using every ounce of skill, focus, and endurance I had cultivated during our training. My pulse synchronized with my mana flow, each strike aimed not to destroy but to redirect, to mislead, to exploit openings. Finally, with one concentrated burst into the rhino's armored flank, it collapsed, groaning, struggling to rise before finally lying still.

I fell to my knees, gasping, blood running down my side and arm, but alive. Alex rushed to me, hands still glowing faintly, tears streaming down his face. "Alaric… you're alive! I… I saved you!"

I coughed, feeling the residual warmth of his energy repairing my wounds. "You… awakened your mana… and it has healing properties," I said weakly, awe-struck. "Alex… you… saved me."

His hands trembled as he released the energy, exhaustion settling over him like a heavy blanket. "I… I didn't know I could… but I felt it… when you were about to… I had to… I couldn't let you die."

I smiled faintly, wincing from pain, and placed a hand on his shoulder. "You've just taken your first step, Alex. Healing isn't just power—it's responsibility, control, and courage."

The forest around us seemed to exhale. The rhino was defeated, and the immediate danger had passed, leaving only the rhythmic pulse of mana flowing through both of us. I could feel Alex's energy now, subtle but steady, harmonizing with mine. For the first time, we were a team—not just brothers, but partners in survival, growth, and magic.

I pulled Alex close, supporting him as we limped toward a safer path through the thicket. Every step was painful, but every step was also a reminder: we were stronger together, and the forest would have to respect both our strength and our resolve.

Tonight, the stars would witness our survival, the awakening of a new power, and the bond forged in near-death fire. Tomorrow, the journey would continue—but now, nothing would break us easily.
