Chapter 23 - The Shadow People!

While the escapees were busy busting out of the cursed cabin, the boy went silent—and then a whole new voice, elderly and eerie but strangely tender, echoed in the dark:

My sweet boy, can you hear me? It's me—your grandma. He let me step away from the endless void of nothingness just for a moment so I could talk to you. Are you doing okay? I left you not long ago and I've been so worried. Where are you growing up now? Are you eating well?

I hope He'll let me come back again when you grow up, so I can see the strong man you'll become. So I can see your family… and how you cradle your own little child…

I've had enough! Whoever you are—if you don't cut this tragic soap opera right now, I swear I'll find you and sue for emotional damage! - Leilani shouted, cutting off the sentimental ghostly monologue that made Flora feel like her head was about to float away and she needed to howl—not necessarily like a wolf (she didn't know how), but at least scream and scratch at something.

The handle clicked—and Camillo shot through the now- unlocked door that he'd been trying to break open with those little shoulder- jabs of his. Light from the hallway spilled inside. Everyone bolted out like bullets, shoving each other to escape this waking nightmare. Flora's legs barely obeyed her, but she stumbled through the threshold just in time to see the Costume staring back at them with that invisible, unreadable gaze.

…Was it you? Did you let us out? - She asked, though it was kind of

As expected, no answer. Lorenzo lunged at him, trying to yell something, but the Costume slipped right through the half- open door and locked it shut behind him—leaving Lorenzo stuck with nothing but frustration.

Once they'd all caught their breath and wiped the sweat off, Manu suggested:

Let's keep Evelyn, are you recording already?

The aunt replied:

I missed the whole damn scene, and now I'm gonna beat myself up forever about it. Shit! I should've paid more for that other camera—this episode would've destroyed everything!-

Flora silently agreed. As they moved as a clump toward the exit, she started narrating what happened for the viewer. Spoken out loud, the whole thing didn't sound half as compelling—but the director was clearly reliving every second of terror, still trembling like crazy.

Before stepping out onto the deck, Leilani snapped back into her forgotten persona and declared:

You're not getting the contract—or my recommendation! I may be just an assistant, but I'm sure my boss would agree. Speaking of which… where is he?!-

Looking around, Camillo exhaled:

He's in - He gestured toward the door, looking disgusted. - Grinning and rubbing his creepy little hands. Stayed behind with the demon kid. And that track Costume.

Evelyn snorted:

He's in for a wild-

Leilani darted back inside, and Flora's friends followed—apparently still not having learned the lesson and hell- bent on saving everyone. Either you've got the bleeding heart gene or you don't.

With a tired sigh, Manu waved a hand:

Let's wrap it We really earned our paycheck tonight.-

No one argued. Out on the deck, they found Vanna and Peyota—Peyota was sitting on the floor, fiddling with the wheel on the designer's wheelchair. Caught off guard, Vanna chirped:

Oh! There you are! I wanted to go with you guys, but my friend here said one of my wheels was acting up. Can you believe it? Peyota promised to fix it! Isn't she just amazing with her hands?-

Unbothered by the weird stares, the gangsta girl snapped:

They don't get it, gurl! Me, I like all my rides tight and flyin' high. I don't care if it's a Benz Truck, a busted- ass roadster, or your lil' ride here. Fist bump. You my girl, ma buddy!

They fist- bumped, and Vanna admired the gesture with full- blown delight.

No washies for at least a month, - Evelyn - Anyway, time to head home, sweetheart.-

As always with the pressure,- Flora thought - Good thing Copy isn't here to see how Auntie bosses me around. That little troublemaker vanished again and missed all the fun.-

Yes, I The next shoot's the day after tomorrow, and tomorrow I'll call everyone to go over the process. You're all dismissed. Goodbye, everyone.

This time, though, no one listened. The crew decided to stand around and go over everything that had happened today. And they would've just kept going if it weren't for Manu suddenly calling out:

As the authorized representative of the yacht's owner and, more importantly, a humble subordinate to Lady Flora, I kindly ask you all to leave. I'm about to escort the rest of the group out of that cabin, and after that, let's wrap this up. They respect him,- Flora noted, watching people actually begin to disperse. Leilani emerged looking completely wrung out, followed by Campus, shamefully glancing around, his body being helped along by Flora's friends. Then came Flavius, practically skipping, shouting:

They found me! The Shadow People! But I beat them! I didn't give up!
