Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 1 — Part 5

CHAPTER 1 — Part 5

The cold night pressed down on them like a heavy blanket. Every step Lin, Sin, and Rima took seemed louder than it should, echoing off the empty streets. The city was still awake somewhere in the distance, but here, the darkness was suffocating.

Sin kept glancing over his shoulder.

"Lin… I keep seeing shadows… moving."

Lin didn't answer right away. His jaw was tight, his mind racing. He felt it too—the pressure, the sense of being watched, as if unseen eyes were tracing every heartbeat.

"Then don't look. Just focus on moving forward," he said quietly, keeping his voice calm for both of them.

Rima's hand clutched his sleeve, small and trembling.

"Lin… what if it catches us?" she whispered.

Lin shook his head.

"It won't—if we stay quiet, if we keep calm, it won't matter. Shadows don't follow fear… they only notice it."

A sudden gust of wind swept past them. The sound of breaking glass made Sin flinch violently. Lin felt a twinge in his chest—the same twinge he always felt before the dream-gate appeared.

"You see? That's exactly what I'm talking about," he murmured. "The world… it's bleeding into our dreams."

Rima's eyes widened.

"Dreams? Lin, I don't understand…"

"You will," he said softly, as though revealing the truth might protect her somehow.

"Someday, you'll understand why some things can't be explained… why some losses… why some shadows linger."

They reached an abandoned park, empty swings moving slightly in the wind. The shadows here were thicker, darker, moving like liquid. Lin's palms were sweaty, but he kept them steady at his sides.

Suddenly, he froze. The shadowy figures—the ones he had glimpsed before in his dreams—were there. Not fully formed, not fully human, but watching. Waiting. Silent.

Sin stepped closer to Rima.

"They… they know us," he whispered, voice barely audible.

Lin swallowed hard, forcing down the panic that clawed at his chest.

"Yes. And we've known them too, in ways we can't yet remember."

The shadows didn't move toward them, but the air thickened as if the world itself was holding its breath. Lin felt his heartbeat hammering in his ears. He could taste the metallic tang of fear and adrenaline.

"This isn't safe," he said, voice low. "Not for any of us. We need to keep going."

Rima nodded, trembling. Sin's small hand held hers tightly. Lin led them through the darkness, toward the distant glow of the station lights, each step careful, deliberate, like walking on a blade's edge.

Behind them, the night whispered.

Something unseen had started following.

And Lin knew—this was only the beginning.
