Chapter 3 - The awakening

I woke up with my head still foggy from everything that had happened. As I sat up, I placed my hand on my head where it was itching, but the pain was excruciating, a throbbing sensation. When I glanced at my hand, I was horrified to see it smeared with blood. Everything around me was burnt except for behind me, there must have been a shift of wind that saved my life. But I was lost. My head was dripping with blood "No..." I quickly turned my head to see the rock I had hit; it was soaked in deep red blood. I was overwhelmed with panic and got to my feet, my legs trembling from all the running. I glanced around. There was nothing—no path in sight, everything was charred, and I couldn't recognize where I was. I thought I had only run a mile or so, but it seemed I had covered several, at least six. Is that even feasible? My head throbbed, making it hard to think clearly. Unsure of which direction to take, I grabbed my bag and began searching for my compass. It was nowhere to be found. No, I packed it; I'm certain I did. I emptied everything out, and then I spotted it. It was cracked and damaged. It must have broken when I fell. "No, no, NO!" I shouted. "Help! Hello? Someone help me!" But there was only silence. I sank down, feeling defeated. I need to get up. Just walk. I scanned the area and noticed everything around me was mountains, and trees I found the nearest towering mountain in the distance far, away. Smoke lingered all around me; I had thought finding a trail would be simple, but after the fire, everything had changed, and nothing looked familiar. Everything was scorched except for the trees that stood around me. I started walking toward the mountain, hoping that reaching the summit would reveal a road or something. Before I left, I grabbed my medkit and cleaned my wond and put a bandage on it. And with that I stood up, put my pack on, and began to walk.
