Why hadn't any of them questioned where I had vanished to? What had happened during those missing hours?
The more I turned it over in my mind, the heavier that strange weight pressed against my chest. It twisted together with the peculiar way everyone had been treating me these past few days.
"Lost your voice, Evan Clemens? Or maybe you just can't think of a good lie when someone calls you out?" Matthew sneered, his words slicing through my spiraling thoughts.
"He's too much of a coward to admit what he really is in front of Mariyah," Hardy drawled lazily.
Laughter exploded across the clearing. I stared at this fool who was desperate to play hero for his audience, spouting complete garbage.
Before I could respond, a growl tore through the night air. It was deep and razor-sharp, cutting the laughter dead in its tracks.
Even I flinched at the sound.
