Elena's POV:
The silence is too heavy and unbearable. It feels thick and presses against my chest, making it difficult to breathe.
I sit and face outside the window. Adrian is seated closely beside me, and yet it feels like there's an ocean between us. He hasn't looked at me since we got on the plane. He's barely even spoken more than two sentences to me.
He's just been grunting and huffing and puffing. If I ask a question, he'll just nod, or shake his head. Other times he'll act like he can't hear me, but I know he can.
I sigh deeply, twisting slightly to steal a glance at him.
His laptop rests on his thighs, the screen glowing faintly. Lines of text scroll past as he types, fingers moving with precision. His jaw is tight, the muscle ticking every few seconds, his shoulders rigid, like he's preparing himself for the worst.
I swallow and turn my gaze back to the window, watching the city shrink beneath us. Vegas disappears into a blur of lights and distance.
