Chapter 70 - Combat Training, Rapid Proficiency Increase

Bruce let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. Three years of research.

Months of staged treatments. And it had worked exactly the way he'd engineered it to work, with none of the horror stories that came with every other enhancement method his meta-knowledge warned him about.

"Good," he said. "Because I'm not stopping here."

"I assumed as much. Though I would recommend a recovery period before beginning any further physical undertakings today."

Bruce almost laughed. "Fine. I'll rest. For an hour."

"I will hold you to that."

He made his way upstairs slowly, muscles aching in a way that felt earned rather than injured. Alfred met him in the hallway outside the kitchen, a mug of something warm already in hand like he'd sensed the timing.

"You look like you've been hit by a truck, Master Bruce," Alfred said, handing over the mug without comment on what it contained. Herbal, mild, the kind of thing meant to settle a body rather than energize it.

"Feels about right."

"Another training session?"

"Something like that."

Alfred studied him for a moment, the way he always did when he suspected there was more to the story than Bruce was offering. But he didn't push. He never pushed past the line Bruce had quietly drawn years ago, and Bruce had never stopped being grateful for that restraint even when it made him feel guilty for needing it.

"Get some rest," Alfred said instead. "Whatever it is you're building toward, it won't fall apart if you take an hour for yourself."

Bruce nodded and let himself be steered toward the sitting room, where he drank the tea Alfred had made and stared out the window at Wayne Manor's grounds until his body finally admitted it needed the stillness.

Bruce entered the Pocket Dimension that evening with a specific goal in mind, something beyond simple maintenance training.

Nine years of practicing seven hundred martial arts styles had given him mastery in the individual sense. He could execute any technique from any style flawlessly, on command, against any opponent whose patterns he recognized.

But mastery of the parts wasn't the same as mastery of the whole. In real combat, styles blurred together under pressure.

Against Deadshot, he'd consciously shifted between disciplines mid-fight, choosing Muay Thai here, judo there, wrestling to close distance when needed.

It had worked.

But it had also required conscious selection in the middle of a fight for his life, a fraction of a second of decision-making that could someday get him killed against something faster.

He wanted that fraction of a second gone.

Bruce made his way to the cave's replica and activated the full array of combat dummies, programmed now with more sophisticated behavior than the ones he'd trained against months earlier.

NEXUS's shadow instance had spent weeks refining their combat algorithms based on real fight data, Deadshot's movement patterns among them.

"Configuration," Bruce said. "Randomized attack sequences. No fixed style per dummy. I want them switching mid-engagement the way a real opponent would."

"Configured," the dimension's NEXUS shadow replied. "This will make the exercise significantly harder to predict."

"That's the point."

He started slow, deliberately. Five dummies activated around him in a loose circle, each one drawing from a randomized library of techniques that shifted without warning.

A boxer's jab became a wrestler's shot became a kickboxer's roundhouse mid-combination, forcing Bruce's brain to abandon style recognition entirely and react purely to the physical information in front of him, weight shift, hip rotation, the angle of a shoulder.

Crack!

The first exchange ended with Bruce blocking a strike he hadn't consciously identified as coming from any specific discipline.

His hand had simply moved, intercepting the blow at the correct angle without him choosing which technique to use.

He reset and tried again. And again. Hour after hour, his body slowly stopped asking which style to answer with and simply answered.

The notifications ticked upward as the hours passed, a new tracked skill Bruce hadn't seen before, something the Proficiency Panel had apparently started measuring on its own once his overall martial arts mastery crossed some threshold he hadn't been watching for.
