Have you ever heard about the allegory of the cave?
You know, the story about three prisoners chained up inside a cave, with the only entertainment they have at their disposal being shadows?
The puppets reflected on the walls were their reality. They had no way of knowing whether what they were seeing was real, but that was okay with them, since they never once had to question it.
One day, one of the prisoners is unchained and goes up to the surface, seeing light for the first time.
He sees colour, real and malleable shapes and objects, and quickly realizes that their reality had been all wrong. That the shadows had deceived them, that there was more out there, far more than their simple minds could ever comprehend.
