Chapter 149 - Chapter 149 : The Six Who Came Without Names

The six figures stepped into the light.

None of them wore the insignia of a known power.

None carried an obvious weapon.

They simply stood at the edge of the valley, facing William.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

William examined them one by one.

Their strength was considerable.

But that wasn't what interested him.

Their connections were strange.

They were connected to one another.

But not through a normal network.

The connections seemed deliberately limited, as if each person knew only what they were supposed to know.

William understood immediately.

Another layer of the information system.

Mira stood beside him.

"Who are you?"

The tallest figure answered.

"We don't have names you would recognize."

William smiled faintly.

"Then give me the names I can recognize."

The figure remained silent.

William continued:

"Names are useful."

"They reveal affiliations."

"They reveal history."

"They reveal who is willing to stand behind someone."

The figure looked at him.

"Then perhaps you understand why we don't use them."

William's smile disappeared.

"Perhaps."

One of the six stepped forward.

"We came because you have begun interfering with something much larger than yourself."

William looked at him.

"That's a dramatic opening."

"We aren't here to threaten you."

"Then why did you come?"

"To explain."

"Explain what?"

"The information you've been receiving."

William's expression became serious.

"Then start."

The man nodded.

"The people you've encountered aren't part of one organization."

"I know."

"They don't even know one another."

"I know."

"The symbol connects them."

"I know."

The man paused.

"But you don't know why."

William said nothing.

"That's why we're here."

The man reached into his clothing.

Mira immediately tensed.

William raised one hand.

She stopped.

The man produced a small object.

It wasn't the same symbol.

It was a simple piece of dark metal.

He placed it on the ground.

William examined it.

No visible energy.

No obvious connection.

He extended his perception.

Nothing.

The man said:

"That is the source of the instructions."

William's eyes narrowed.

"The symbol isn't."

"No."

"Then what is it?"

"A key."

William looked at the metal object.

"A key to what?"

The man didn't answer.

William waited.

Finally, another member of the group spoke.

"To a system that predates most of the powers currently governing this world."

William's expression changed slightly.

"How old?"

"We don't know."

"Who created it?"

"We don't know."

"Why does it exist?"

"We don't know."

William laughed quietly.

"You came here promising truth."

The first man answered:

"We promised information."

William looked at him.

"There's a difference."

"Yes."

William walked toward the object.

He didn't touch it.

Instead, he studied its connections.

At first, there was nothing.

Then he noticed something.

The object wasn't connected to the symbol.

It was connected to something deeper.

Something buried.

Something far below the valley.

William's eyes narrowed.

"You brought me here because of this."

The six remained silent.

William continued.

"Or rather..."

He looked at the ground.

"...you knew I would sense it."

The first man nodded.

"Yes."

Mira looked at William.

"What is it?"

William answered quietly.

"Something is beneath us."

The ground trembled.

Not violently.

Just enough to confirm what William had sensed.

The six figures stepped backward.

William remained where he was.

Mira asked:

"Is it dangerous?"

"I don't know."

The ground trembled again.

A faint line appeared beneath William's feet.

It extended outward.

Then another.

A formation was awakening.

William looked at the six.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"You knew this would happen."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it wouldn't have awakened for us."

William understood.

"It responds to connections."

The man nodded.

"And yours is different."

The formation became brighter.

The valley changed.

The air became heavier.

William felt the network beneath him.

It wasn't like the seven.

It wasn't like the ordinary observation points.

It was older.

Deeper.

Almost disconnected from everything above it.

William crouched and placed his hand near the ground.

He didn't touch the formation.

He simply observed it.

Then he felt something.

A connection.

It was not moving toward him.

It was waiting.

Waiting for someone capable of connecting to it.

William stood.

"What is this place?"

The six figures exchanged looks.

Finally, the first man answered:

"We call it the Archive."

William frowned.

"The Archive of what?"

"Connections."

Silence.

Mira looked at William.

"Could this be related to your ability?"

"Probably."

The first man corrected her.

"Not probably."

William looked at him.

"It is."

The man continued:

"That's why we came."

William's expression hardened.

"You knew about my ability."

"Yes."

"How?"

"We've been observing you."

"How long?"

"Long enough."

William stared at him.

"Then tell me something."

"What?"

"Did you know about me before I entered the network?"

The man hesitated.

"Yes."

William's expression became cold.

"How?"

"We were informed."

"By whom?"

"We don't know."

William laughed once.

"Of course."

One of the six spoke.

"There is something you need to understand."

William turned toward him.

"The system isn't controlled by a single person."

"Then by whom?"

"No one."

William frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does if you understand how it works."

The man pointed toward the metal object.

"Information enters."

"It passes through several layers."

"Each layer removes something."

"Each person receives only what they need."

"Then the information moves again."

William looked at the object.

"So nobody knows the entire structure."

"Exactly."

"Not even you."

"No."

William nodded.

"Then whoever created it succeeded."

The ground trembled again.

This time, a section of the formation opened.

A staircase appeared.

It descended into darkness.

Nobody moved.

William looked down.

Mira asked:

"Are we going in?"

William didn't answer immediately.

He examined the connections.

There was no obvious trap.

But that didn't mean there wasn't one.

He looked at the six figures.

"You want me to enter."

The first man nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because the Archive responds only to you."

William smiled faintly.

"Then why don't you enter first?"

The man shook his head.

"We can't."

"Can't?"

"We tried."

"What happened?"

"We were rejected."

William looked at the staircase.

"How?"

The man didn't answer.

William understood.

"That's why you need me."

"Yes."

William began walking down.

Mira followed.

The six remained above.

William looked back.

"You're not coming?"

"We can't."

"Convenient."

The man smiled faintly.

"Perhaps."

William continued downward.

Mira stayed beside him.

The staircase seemed endless.

The further they went, the weaker the world above became.

The network disappeared.

The valley disappeared.

Even the normal sense of distance began changing.

Mira whispered:

"William."

"Yes?"

"I can't feel the connections anymore."

"Neither can I."

"Is that normal?"

"I don't know."

They continued.

After several minutes, the staircase ended.

A vast chamber appeared before them.

There were no walls.

No ceiling.

Only darkness.

And countless lines.

Thousands of them.

Millions.

They stretched through the darkness in every direction.

Mira stared.

"What is this?"

William didn't answer.

He was too focused.

The connections weren't random.

Each one contained information.

Memories.

Events.

Choices.

Relationships.

History.

William could sense all of it.

But he couldn't read everything.

There was too much.

He understood immediately why the place had been called the Archive.

It wasn't a library of books.

It was a library of connections.

Mira whispered:

"Can you read it?"

"Some."

"How much?"

"Very little."

William stepped forward.

A connection moved toward him.

It stopped in front of him.

Then another.

Then another.

Slowly, several connections began forming a path.

Mira looked at him.

"It recognizes you."

William nodded.

"But why?"

The answer came from somewhere in the darkness.

"Because you're one of the few who can understand it."

William immediately turned.

Mira froze.

A figure stood in the distance.

Not one of the six.

Not Elena.

Not the masked observer.

Someone else.

William stared.

"Who are you?"

The figure didn't answer.

Instead, it walked closer.

Its face remained hidden.

William could feel no clear connection to it.

That alone was disturbing.

Everyone was connected to something.

This person seemed disconnected.

William narrowed his eyes.

"You're not part of the network."

The figure stopped.

"Correct."

"Then how are you here?"

A pause.

"I was invited."

"By whom?"

The figure looked around.

"By the Archive."

William remained silent.

Mira stepped closer to him.

The figure continued:

"You've been searching for the person behind the information."

"Yes."

"You assumed there was one."

"Yes."

"That assumption was wrong."

William's eyes narrowed.

"I already know that."

"Do you?"

The figure looked toward the endless connections.

"The people you've encountered are not your enemy."

William didn't answer.

"They are consequences."

"Of what?"

The figure looked directly at him.

"Of the fact that someone has noticed you."

William's expression became serious.

"Who?"

The figure smiled faintly.

"You keep asking the same question."

"Because I want the answer."

"And you will."

"When?"

"When you understand why you're being watched."

William frowned.

"Then tell me."

The figure pointed toward the connections.

"Look."

William did.

One of the lines brightened.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

They began converging.

Not toward William.

Toward something far beyond the chamber.

A shape slowly appeared.

Seven enormous lines.

William's eyes widened.

The same seven.

But this time, he saw something he hadn't seen before.

The seven weren't simply connected to the Archive.

They were connected to something beyond it.

Something outside the structure of the network itself.

William whispered:

"What's there?"

The figure answered:

"The reason the network exists."

A sudden pressure filled the chamber.

The seven connections began trembling.

Mira stepped backward.

William remained still.

One of the seven lines suddenly broke.

The entire chamber shook.

The figure looked toward it.

"That's not supposed to happen."

William immediately understood.

Something had interfered.

Something had touched one of the seven.

But this time, the sensation was different.

It wasn't coming from within the world.

It wasn't one of the people watching him.

It was distant.

Beyond.

William's expression changed.

He felt the same unfamiliar sensation he had felt before.

The outsiders.

The figure looked at him.

"You felt it."

William nodded.

"Yes."

"They've noticed the Archive."

William looked at him.

"Can they reach it?"

The figure was silent.

Then:

"Not yet."

"Yet?"

The figure looked toward the broken connection.

"That's why everyone is moving."

William finally understood the larger picture.

The information network.

The observers.

The symbol.

The seven.

The Archive.

They weren't necessarily parts of one conspiracy.

They were all responding to the same approaching problem.

Something beyond the world was beginning to affect the structures that had existed long before the current powers.

And the people who knew about it were preparing.

Some through information.

Some through manipulation.

Some through observation.

Some through secrecy.

And some—

through William.

William turned toward the staircase.

"We're leaving."

Mira looked surprised.

"Already?"

"Yes."

The figure asked:

"You don't want to learn more?"

William looked back.

"I do."

"Then why leave?"

"Because if I stay, someone will decide what I should discover next."

The figure smiled.

"You're learning."

William began walking.

Mira followed.

Before they reached the staircase, the figure spoke again.

"William."

He stopped.

"There is one thing you should know."

William turned.

"The people who are watching you aren't all your enemies."

William remained silent.

"Some are afraid of you."

"Some are curious."

"Some want to use you."

"Some want to protect themselves from you."

"And some..."

The figure paused.

"...believe that you may be the person who changes what comes next."

William stared at him.

"And what do you believe?"

The figure smiled.

"I don't know yet."

William nodded.

"Good."

He continued walking.

When William returned to the surface, the six figures were still waiting.

The first man immediately asked:

"What did you see?"

William looked at him.

"The Archive."

The man's expression changed.

"You entered."

"Yes."

"What did it show you?"

William looked toward the sky.

"The seven."

The six became silent.

Then William added:

"And something beyond them."

The first man lowered his eyes.

"So it's begun."

William turned toward him.

"What has begun?"

The man didn't answer.

William stepped closer.

"What has begun?"

Finally, the man looked at him.

"The boundary is no longer the only thing changing."

William's eyes narrowed.

"What else?"

The man looked toward the distant horizon.

"The old systems are waking up."

William said nothing.

The six figures began preparing to leave.

Before they disappeared, William asked:

"One last question."

They stopped.

"Why did you bring me here?"

The first man answered:

"Because we needed someone capable of entering the Archive."

William looked at him.

"That's not the whole reason."

The man smiled faintly.

"No."

"Then what is?"

He looked directly at William.

"Because the Archive chose you before we ever knew your name."

The six disappeared into the darkness.

William remained standing.

Mira approached him.

"What do you think?"

William looked toward the sky.

"I think we've been looking at the wrong battlefield."

"The network?"

"The seven."

"The outsiders?"

"Everything."

He paused.

"Something existed before all of this."

Mira waited.

"And now it's beginning to move."

Far away, beyond the visible universe, a crack appeared across the fabric of space-time.

It was thin.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

And on the other side of it—

something looked inward.
