The instant those words echoed somewhere far beyond my senses, every thought I had shattered, replaced by a tidal wave of agony that exploded inside my body and flooded all five of my senses at once, pain so sharp and overwhelming that it nearly tore my concentration apart and dragged me screaming out of my meditation, a pain unlike anything I had ever experienced in my life—not even during the worst days of my sickness, when breathing itself had been a miracle—this was far worse, more than tenfold, as if my entire existence was being crushed, peeled apart, and rebuilt at the same time.
