Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — The First Strike

The palace was alive with tension, though the surface appeared calm. Candles flickered in the grand hall, their light casting long shadows that danced across the walls. Lucian paced silently in his private chamber, the sharp lines of his jaw set in focus. Tonight, he sensed, the game would change.

Khalista had been summoned under the guise of discussing noble affairs, but both of them knew better. Whoever had sent the warning note weeks ago was no longer content with subtle threats. They intended to strike—and Lucian would not allow Khalista to face it alone.

When she arrived, her dark gown trailing elegantly behind her, he greeted her with a firm but brief touch on her arm. "Stay close. Tonight, the palace will test us like never before," he murmured, his eyes scanning the shadows beyond the doorway.

"I am ready," she replied, her voice calm yet charged with tension. "And I trust you to keep me alive… for now."

Lucian allowed a faint smile, one dark and dangerous. "For now? I like your spirit. But remember… I do not like to lose."

---

The first strike came without warning. During the evening gala, when nobles were distracted by music and wine, a messenger burst into the hall, carrying a sealed letter addressed to Khalista. The crowd barely noticed, but Lucian's instincts screamed.

He moved first, intercepting the messenger and breaking the seal before Khalista could react. Inside, a single line was written in crimson ink:

"Tonight, shadows will claim what is yours."

Khalista's breath caught. "This… this is no longer a warning. They mean to act now."

Lucian's eyes darkened. "Then we will stop them. No one threatens her in my palace and lives to tell the tale."

He took her hand, leading her through hidden corridors and secret passages only he knew, toward the armory. Weapons and armor were not for show—they were preparation for the inevitable betrayal lurking within the palace walls.

"You expect an attack," Khalista said, her voice steady. "Do you know from whom?"

Lucian shook his head. "Not yet. But someone within the court desires leverage. They will strike at the weakest point… which they believe is us. But they are wrong."

---

The attack came swiftly. Torches flickered and a series of muffled shouts echoed through the eastern wing. Lucian and Khalista moved as one, silent and precise. Shadows fell across the corridors as figures cloaked in black attempted to breach the palace defenses.

Lucian drew his sword, its polished steel catching the torchlight. Khalista, trained in defensive techniques, wielded a dagger with a grace that matched his. Together, they became a single unit—a deadly combination of strategy, skill, and trust.

"You knew this would happen," Khalista whispered as they moved through the chaos.

"I expected it," Lucian replied, eyes sharp. "And I knew you could handle yourself. Which is why you're here."

They dispatched the intruders quickly, silently, without drawing attention to themselves. But one figure escaped—a shadowed form who disappeared into the night, leaving only a mark behind: a small emblem etched into the wall, a symbol of a hidden faction within the court.

Lucian's jaw tightened. "They are organized. This is bigger than a single threat. Someone is orchestrating it from within."

Khalista studied the emblem, her mind racing. "And they wanted to scare me… but instead, they revealed themselves. That is a mistake."

Lucian's dark eyes met hers, filled with dangerous admiration. "You are remarkable," he murmured. "And it seems… the game has truly begun."

---

After the attack, the palace was secured, yet the tension remained. Lucian led Khalista to a hidden chamber, a sanctuary far removed from prying eyes.

"You fought well," he said, voice low and intense. "I should not have been surprised. You are… fearless."

"I am not fearless," she replied, leaning against the wall, catching her breath. "I am cautious… but I will not be intimidated."

Lucian stepped closer, their faces inches apart. "Caution is wise. Fear is useless when you stand beside me. But know this—tonight, I saw more than skill. I saw… loyalty. And that… is something I value above all else."

Her heart thudded, and she swallowed, aware of the pull between them. "Then we face the next challenge together?"

"Yes," he said, his voice soft yet commanding. "Together. And no one… will take you from me. Not shadows, not court intrigue, not anyone."

For a long moment, silence hung between them, filled only by the memory of the night's violence and the spark that had ignited between them. Outside, the palace slept, unaware of the storm brewing within its walls.

And Lucian and Khalista understood a truth that could not be denied: in a palace of shadows, their bond was their greatest weapon—and the only force strong enough to survive the darkness to come.
