The silence after my challenge was tense, like it might break at any second. Grey stared at me, his eyes searched my face like he was looking for a secret. The firelight moved in his eyes, making them look like glowing copper, but he didn't look kind.

"Being paranoid helps you stay alive in this house, Seraphim," he said, his voice was low, he sounded tired, but he tried to hide it, "If I don't trust you, it's because I want to get out of here alive, and I want you to get out, too."

He kept looking at me, waiting for me to give up and show him the phone in my pocket. My heart beat fast, like a trapped bird, but I kept my breathing steady. I rubbed my arms and acted like I was shivering, "I'm just cold, Grey," I whispered, "I was looking for gloves in my pocket. I didn't have any, that's all."
